its a miracle that the cell arc turned out as well as it did, but it still set gohan up to fail.

From what we can gather of the conversation, Nephrite is trying to talk Yellow Diamond into cancelling the invasion of Earth because there's life on it. The notion that organic life is worth protecting seems to have at least been floating around the gem ranks long before Rose Quartz, so there were probably other cases of a commander going rogue.

Spinel's cut is perfect: she is the single, if not at least one of the best, Spinel Gems; made specifically for the service of Pink Diamond.
Spinel is also an older model, well over 6,000 years old, so she's probably made from the best of the best stock when the Gem Empire was still going strong. ALL Gems are supposed to be 'insanely strong', but as time went one, resources thinned, they began to cut corners.

They're all shit. Not a single one of them is made, designed, or intended for combat. All of their combat prowess is through training while an actual Gem Warrior like a proper Amethyst has not just experiencing & training, but instinct and the physical build to carry them on.
-Pearl is a servant.
-Garnet is a fusion between a Teller and 1/3rd of a cannon fodder Foot Soldier.
-Amethyst is severely deformed and may be the worst example of her kind.
-Lapis is a terraformer, so she's kind of a glass canon.
-Peridot is a technician and engineer. She was also made from 'scraps'.
-Bismuth is a manufacturer and built for heavy labor and construction.... Bismuth ironically may be the 2nd most powerful Crystal Gem just by herself. She's a Murderdozer.

The Crystal Gems would have gotten less of their asses handed to them in the series. Their fusions would have also been more powerful- Smoky Quartz wouldn't have been such an abomination to look at. Amethyst also would have been more well adjusted n' so forth: the movie showed she wasn't just physically deformed, but had mental development problems when they found her.
She's just completely and woefully a dud in every way.

The con though is if you made her 'normal' she might not have bonded with Steven as strongly as she did: the first Gem Human fusion and the first one Steven was capable of turning back to normal since they were so familiar and comfortable with one another. Her being functional would most likely entirely change their entire relationship and they'd only have the.. "both born on Earth" to bond over.

It was never just about humans. "Now we're only falling apart" and the early episodes with all the plants Rose tended show that. She loves organic life, and wanted to protect it from Gem destruction. I actually believe on some level What Lapis dismissively said about the Crystal Gems was genuinely true about Rose/Pink: That he doesn't care about gems as much as organic life.

Spinel gemstones don't have to be pink or twinned. The fact that hers was a naturally twinned pink crystal that got cut perfectly means, as far as I can infer, that she's twice as powerful as a your average single gem as well as being cut with an absolute geometric perfection like Jasper. We saw with Jasper how the quality of the material and the cut affects the strength of the gem. On top of that she was naturally pink, which not all spinel gems are irl, and color seems to give the gem race special properties.

The Spinel from the movie is basically a rare perfectly formed perfectly colored super gem who was only presumed harmless because of her type's role.

I feel like "6000 years isn't long at all: and all the poison being released and fixed regardless ruins the movie because it removes all tensions.

Gems are not supposed to grow out of their programming, when they do, they become more powerful because their powers were not intended to be used in other way that's not their original porpuse.

All gems are insanely powerful, even the weakest ones can create weapons and control natural elements, the stability of gemkind is entirely dependant on the gems' coded submissive nature and obedience towards gems of higher status according to the caste system, also emotional state factors into the way their powers can manifest.

When a gem is emotionally unstable and no longer follows the hierarchy all bets are off.

I bet that was all coded in by the original creators of the gems, as a way to prevent an uprising, and the Diamonds were just following the rules because they felt they still needed to follow them, like an instinct.

Era 1 Gems are extremely decadent and powerful but their tech seems prone to having design flaws.
Era 1 Gems like Lapis, Bismuth and Spinel have a surplus of power at their disposal that easily transfers into combat unlike Peridot who was probably made with little resources but is given weapons and tech to remedy being physically weak, the Limb enhancers had multiple functions like being protective gloves, a PDA and a gun, Era 2 had to cut corners on making new Gems but made up by improving tool use, most likely from Yellow Diamond being the only active Diamond since Blue was busy being depressed and White locked herself in her room so Yellow needed to pick up the slack.

Just about anything can be used as a weapon if you're strong or creative enough, Lapis and Bismuth are industrial use Gems, but industrial equipment is notorious for being extremely dangerous if misused, cranes and rivet guns aren't made to be weapons but they still have alot of killing power.

Spinel was clearly made first though. It could be that Pearl came with an extensive database of all current gems created at that point.

Maybe, but even not, something seems to be up with her that we don't know about. Bismuth comments on the uniqueness of her weapon, she didn't have any programming on her reset, Peridot comments that she's just as competent as a regular amytyst (just short), and she's probably the most skilled shapeshifter out of every gem we've seen so far.

Maybe she was always that strong, she just never applied her unusually-stretchy body for anything but play until then. The series has a shitton of gems who use their powers outside of their intended purpose to good effect

They steal the spotlight from other characters because they are fulfiling their true purpose: they entertain.

They didn't really beat her, though. She was being tossed around, but being tossed around doesn't seem to affect her all that much. Her disadvantage in that fight probably stemmed from her lack of fighting spirit more than a lack of skill.

Yamcha wins fights in the preliminaries to the 1st world tournament. Yamcha's first scuffle with Goku ends in a draw with Yamcha being at advantage (but punks out cuz there's a female there) Yamcha also beat the Saibaman that killed him in one-on-one combat pretty solidly. During the Pearl reboot song, default Pearl refers to Steven, instead of her master, as the lucky one upon Spinel's reformation and immediate bonding to Steven, which could mean that receiving a perfect spinel is on par with or perhaps even better than receiving a pearl - which are, need I remind you, ludicrously rare.
It's not a lot to go on, really, I feel we're missing some crucial information about gem society. If it's even vaguely similar to real history though, Jesters usually held a relatively esteemed position and were given freedoms that other people of the time simply did not have.
It would be interesting to get a deep dive into old gem culture and society, but seeing as how Steven is doing his best to disband it, I doubt that will ever happen.
