I cried during the diamonds final song because it was such a good fit and a well made bookend for the movie. Two sets of broken people finding a missing piece in each other.

The first diamonds song is extra sweet because they're trying so hard, so it was nice to hear it again at the end.

Also just the sheer talent in the room on the diamonds song is insane. White's voice was revealed accidentally because Yellow and White's voice actors were starring in a broadway musical together and during a signing Lupone was like "oh you like steven universe? she's white diamond :3 you should get her autograph too".

Not him, but I stand by the idea that White Diamond and maybe even Yellow Diamond should have been people that could not be redeemed, but Spinel... not so much. She's not irredeemable in fact out of most of the villains in the show she's probably one who should be given a second chance or option to change. I do think its still annoying how each villain (except Jasper kinda) was redeemed, we really could have used a pure evil or irredeemable antagonist.

She just left her to rot, either out of shame or purely forgetting about her. She would've just stayed right fucking there if steven never made that broadcast. Assuming she got other messages because the holographic device was working fine but no news about pink would've left her there waiting for eons.

I see it like this, every villain is like reflection of a person in the real world. I think it loses points though when the show is asking us to ignore all of the truly evil and cruel things the villains are doing. We are supposed to look at this in the eyes of "Yeah the Diamonds did genocidal and murderous things to so many races, but who cares? They can be changed after a discussion about how everyone is equal and needs to understand yourself and one another. And there will be no repercussions for their earlier actions." Its very cartoonish, which again... is Rebecca's plan.

They came to earth because they missed pd and wanted to be with steven but settled for pd's toy "We know that you're not her, but you were her's"...
Sure, they're better now but they still come off as condescending and greedy. The least steven could've done was make her a member of the crystal gems or hugged her goodbye but nope.

The "Is this how it works am I doing it right" line, to me, was less about being a social fuck up and more about being manipulated by an abuser. I read it as giving everything you have and even more, because you are trying to be a friend and friends are always generous, right? All Spinel wanted was attention, and someone to care about her as much as she cared about them.

That being said, once you fall into that spiral it is very easy to be dependent and to blame others when it doesn't work out. As sad as Spinel was and as rough of a go of it as she had, it's not really Steven's job to "fix" her by being her friend

This. When I got into this series, it was already about two and a half seasons in and I marathoned it up to whatever the most recent episode was at the time. That was fine since they were airing together without gaps, but then watching it as it aired from then on was agonizing because of the constant literally months-long hiatuses that fucked the pacing something fierce.

I wish Other Friends had gotten a reprise, there was room for the first rendition to be a lot more raw. Only problem is figuring out where it would fit; best place I can think of would be during the fight on top of the injector but that'd be weird timing wise unless you mixed the reprise with Steven's own song.

I always thought Pink was a great flawed morally grey character, but after this, I'm wondering how many gems she just saw as expendable toys before the end of the Rebellion.

At least Bismuth wasn't left conscious, and she was stored in an important and relatively safe place that Steven would have eventual access too. But did Pink ever spare a second thought for Spinel? Did she simply think that she'd stop "playing" after a day or two and move on with her life? Or did she just completely forget her?

What makes this so offensive is that Pink didn't merely 'forget' about Spinel: she completely and utterly discarded her as if she were an object to do so without a second thought.
Spinel wasn't even mentioned in passing, Pearl referenced her only as a matter of fact, Pink Diamond never even bothered devoting HEAD-SPACE to Spinel once she left. She didn't look back, she didn't wave, she left with a smile on her face. She left effortlessly- Spinel's existence was entirely inconsequential.

-There was that White Gem powering the Pink Diamond Memorial Pyramid. What was up with her? They 'defeated' the statue or whatever she was powering and then they bubbled her and we never heard from her again. She wasn't even corrupted: she was literally just a guard for a memorial monument to keep the Crystal Gems from desecrating Pink Diamonds 'resting' place.

-Desert Glass, she's in that pillow. She was that Gem in the desert that possess Geomancy or Geokineses- she could control sand. For all we know she's still in that fucking pillow; you can't turn back into a person if you're stuck in an item you can only do a couple of things or whatever. She might not have been corrupted either, just pissed off. I dunno.

I think it's supposed to feel a bit uncomfortable, but that's basically how Blue was the whole time after the big reveal. I thought it was a bit odder for Yellow, but I guess she doesn't have her usual ice-cold CEO facade to fall back on.

Steven was strangely distant in this movie, But I have a bone to pick with Pearl. She is pretty much like Spinel, both where made for PD and their lives gravitated around her.
If someone should know how obsesed she is it would be her, but once she recover her memories she just can't understand whats Spinel's deal.

Yaeh, cool tragic backstory, nice feels. But why couldn't Spinel just go all out with her newfound insanity? Why every single villain has to have a reformation arch nowadays? Seriously, man, i'm asking for much here. Sure, present your villain as a wronged person that had a traumatic experience, just stop patting them on their backs when they go all bad guy.

Why couldn't she go ham with it? Why? Make her embrace her evilness and kill her at the end. Simple. Better. That would be so much better. I really loved the movie's atmosphere, but this very detail is ruining it for me.

I absolutely agree. I also thought that her turning against him one more time was actually handled really well. Normally I don't like it when characters switch back and forth, but the scene was perfect.

Steven is kind of weird and selective about who he does and doesn't unconditionally forgive, so in a way this is an oddly consistent flaw with his character.
Like, he basically decides within the first 5 minutes of meeting someone whether or not he's going to devote every fiber of his being to fixing them or if he's just going to pass him them off and, much like his mother, he has a habit of being selective about this for the sake of his own convenience.

He was willing to forgive all the shit Lapis did, but never 'really' made the same attempt with Jasper to establish a dialogue.

They're somehow using spinel being made as a toy as a defense for pink? Oh she didn't like being seen as immature so it's totally fair that she leaves her there for 6000 after abandoning her because she got bored of her only purpose

I mean, I can KINDA see that, but him not trying to forgive Spinel and Jasper is understandable, over say, Lapis, as unlike Lapis, Spinel and Jasper were intensely direct, with Jasper downright knocking Steven the fuck out.

That doesn't make much sense though, Spinel was a villain with very clear issues that almost immediately started to get resolved the second Steven took time to listen to her, and further confrontation could have easily been avoided with just a little compassion, not to mention at this point Steven had plenty of experience with gems trying to kill him.
On the other hand, the first time Steven met Peridot she ended up being the first gem who tried to straight up kill him with almost zero emotional motivation behind it, she took a look at him and was like "ew, what the fuck is this thing?" You'd think that would leave more of an impact on him.

The diamonds(and every other gem really) where Emotionally retarded. they have feelings for each other but didn't know how to express or even what they were in the first place.
Then steven came and tech tem how to properly deal with there feelings and how to express gratitude and love and shit like that but now that they know how to do it they need to learn how to repress those emotions and learn how and when they should express them.

Precisely. She treated spinel like a toy, given to her just to play with. She wanted to show off the yellow and blue how "mature" she was to be responsible enough to manage a colony so she left her toy behind because it was childish and annoyed her. Then never bothered mentioning it to anyone ever again or trying to retrieve her. Even after the war when she realized gems weren't just pawns, and humans weren't just annoying creatures in the way, spinel was left abandoned. Perhaps it linked her back as pd and hurt her rose identity, but she still left her behind regardless and never expressed any regret to pearl. Pearl only knew she existed sometime in the past, not that she was left to rot.
Pink let her down and didn't even bother to mention her in the event that they could potentially get her to earth. Spinel was so distraight she even poofed herself to change form from cute and heart shaped to aggressive and pointy on the way to earth, which implies some self harm tendencies since getting poofed isn't something done for fun.

Pink Diamond probably didn't actually like her either. That's just her projecting.

Except fry intended to go back to seymour and was taken away by nibbler's actions. Seymour suffered his lonesome because of someone taking his friend away. Stinel suffered because her "friend" actually ditched her and never bothered to come back for her.

Anyone else here love Spinel's first song, "Other Friends?" It was super catchy and the animation was pretty neat as well.

How about humanity themselves? I don't think the entire population would be all too ecstatic about the idea of lesbian space rocks suddenly immigrating onto Earth, at least initially. Have some shady gem-obsessed organization with heavy firepower (probably adapted from ancient gem tech) assume that the gems are a dangerous and deceitful threat. This would result in an antagonist that would contradict's the Crystal Gems' perspective of humans as being non-lethal nuisances.

6000 years of isolation. Plus she did seem more childish compared to how stoic yellow is. Stinel was waiting for someone she thought was a friend to come back and play with her and literally just stood there, yellow was actively managing planets to conquer, and likely never had to just stay in place for more than a ship's journey.

Also perspective. Yellow could be a few million years old, stinel a few thousand.
