The show has never presented her as a sympathetic figure. They presented Rose as basically Gem Jesus, but Pink Diamond has always been a villain. Once it turned out Rose was just a ruse by PD, all the nuance vanished and all the moral ambiguity was replaced with PD being a retarded baby.

That doesn't change the fact she's still a cunt for leaving what's essentially a dog alone in an planet, retard. It doesn't require more than two brain cells to realize that. They didn't show some "Tragically romantic story of lost love" like the trash you described, it was just an bratty teenager throwing away her pet because she decided it made her look like a kid.

I actually think that Pink Diamond is a sociopath in some sense, but not an evil sense. She's basically both a small child and a computer. She can't feel real empathy or compassion. Everything is about how it makes her feel and she helps Earth just because she finds it and humans fun like pets. She finds them so fun she decides to become one in the only sense that she can. She never develops the capacity for selfless friendship or selfless love like some of the other Gems do or like Steven does, which is the point (how Steven is different and better).

But then, this is consistent with the Diamonds. They only change because they like that it makes their "baby" happy and because they're just so bored. Not because it was the right thing to do. The Diamonds aren't evil but they aren't capable of being "good" either.
