how solid is the storytelling in Wormwood? I read a couple small trades out of order from the library years ago and it just seemed meh...but that could easily cause I was reading out of order.
Also, Stokeo is amazing but is there any storytelling in that Grunt book or is it just art?
Cameron Roberts
I ordered Hellblazer 3, 4 and 5, I'll wait for the Garth Ennis Omni to continue the series so I don't know what to buy next.
Noah Gonzalez
Does anyone have the Authority omni yet? Are there any problems with it?
Dylan Flores
>Lose an auction on ebay >Feel bummed >Three seconds later, find it cheaper as a buy it now Happy labor day weekend /shelf/
Nice, nice... Glad the thread was made again. Reposting my shelf from yesterday (this time with a bit less glare), still messy but I'll try and get it sorted this week and before the new haul of comics arrive here, which should be plenty. Missing two volumes of the new "Annihilation" reprint that should go where the filling notebook is.
Haha yeah, how can you tell...? There is another one missing (the Operation Galactic Storm Epic Collection) but I'm currently reading it, so it's off the shelf. Also, my latest order from this week.
Wormwood wasnt really my thing, if you didnt like the trades I don't think you would like the collected edition. It sucks because I wanted to like it because it was recommended by a friend so I think I just had really high hopes for it and I felt like the story telling was a bit meh and just not the type of humor I like. My GFs brother would probably enjoy the humor more so I will gift the book to him for Christmas. Grunt has some short stories in them but it's mostly an art book and man his art Is amazing. I havent gotten around to reading the stories in the book because I'm still catching up on other stuff but if your into James Stokoe art it's a good buy
James Parker
that's a shame about Wormwood, I really like everything else I have read of Templesmith (especially when he works with Steve Niles). I guess I will just stick with more Niles horror then
Carter Adams
You should still check it out user, if you like templesmith then it might be more your thing.
Nick Cave Mercy on Me all of Craig P Russell Opera comics Comicbook Tattoo, which is a collection of short comics about Tori Amos songs Alan Moore's Songbook Lights (I hear it's good, I haven't gotten it yet) Murder Falcon
Shop in nearest city had a Labor Day Sale starting on Friday. Alpha Flight Omni. Herbie, and Metabarons were 25% off Timestorm and TT:Games were 50% off.
LCS was having a sale. Got some Tomasi Superman, a Sensational She Hulk issue, Batman 66 #1, Lobo Christmas Special issue, and a Mothra figure
Camden Evans
oh shoot, didn't know either was getting reprinted but I'll grab those. I've been looking out for Tales of the Demon at used book stores and LCS's for a long time and haven't found it.
Juan Bailey
>wanted to go to a local con this weekend >was looking forward to it and was unable to go >only artist I wanted art from doesn't sell online >wanted a vampi commission, yet I couldn't get any art in that style Disappoint
Also Moore made a really fucking good song for V for Vendetta, and put it in the comic, look for the Vicious Cabaret.
Levi Williams
tits n ass
Noah Gonzalez
Well that's the only reason why I bought those Body Bag issues so who am I to judge? I'm shocked at my shopping habits lately. I've completely abandoned trades and going back to floppy collecting. I'll eventually shift back into that. There are some Sandman, Hellboy, and Wonder Woman volumes I've been meaning to purchase. But hey I've gotten some cool shit over the past few months
Kayden Garcia
ah that sucks, Vampianon. What artist?
I'm going to get Jordie Belaire to sign her first author book, Vampirella/Red Sonja. She's my fav colourist in the industry and she seems to have enough a grasp on storytelling to make it work. I hope it's good. Priest's Vampi is...something, I haven't made my mind up on it yet. I find her interesting cause she's not a "real" Vampire. She's an alien from the planet Drakulon who got in a war with planet Lupid and both their planets died. So it makes it so she can be horror and sci-fi stories and they just work. also yes she is hot
I don't see many working though...Iron Man maybe...Captain America already has done it in his backstory. X-Men are ensamble. Hulk is Immortal. I just don't know what characters they could do it for.
But Grande Design FF sounds cool
Owen Morris
Eh, any writer with an ounce of creativity can make the concept work.
Liam Johnson
so.....Waid, Ewing.....Zdarsky. I'm all out here
Sebastian Jackson
Duggan too. specially of Captain America and Doctor Strange.
Oliver Kelly
So they haven't actually announced any others. Thanks.
Jordan Campbell
That's enough. Iron Man Life Story and Avengers Life Story write themselves.
Juan Harris
hmm yeah, but I would want Busiek to do Avengers Life Story
Daniel Fisher
>so I don't know what to buy next. You would want book 9 next then. If you are a completionist, then be warned that the omni is skipping the fill-in issue that Smith did during Ennis (the infamous issue that mentioned that John had the occasional ex boyfriend)
Matthew Jones
I never indulge in the cartoon side of this board, but fuck me was this a good movie. The closest a movie has ever come to replicating the style and energy of a comic. It's like it was made specifically for comic fans. Watch this if you haven't.
hpb is half price books and albris is like buying from a amazon 3rd party but you can combine shipping and get promo codes
Juan Nelson
I'd recommend watching Love Death and Robots too. One of the episodes is the origin of that style of animation, it's just...very much more adult. Most of that series is pretty good though, It's like a current version of Heavy Metal
Bendis DD is one of my favorite runs and I'm definitely getting the omni reprints, don't let a bunch of anons ruin what you like
Cameron Kelly
I'm getting paid tomorrow and buying a fuckton of comics, I know I wanna get Lady Mechanika and Lola XOXO C2, what are some other collected books with unbelievably gorgeous, sexy art? I'm trying to expand my horizons past DC books, so any good Marvel books with that kinda art?
Lincoln Carter
not Marvel but: Madame Mirage Top Cow Tomb Raider Hunter-Killer Sunstone Marz/Sejic Witchblade
I meant people already know about this movie if they're in here
Isaac Perez
Fair enough. I just thought I should bring it up as a love letter to comic book readers, since this thread is people who love and read comic books.
Logan Foster
I actually just finished reading my copy of Madam Marage, really enjoyable book. Kinda wish there was more but I'm glad it was its own unique, self contained story. Plus Rocafort art is the best
Andrew Watson
>Plus Rocafort art is the best yup, check out Hunter-Killer. It's written by Mark Waid and the first 6 issues are by Silvestri and doing his sexy work (some of it ends up being a bit too static but I still love his work) and the last 6 issues are by Rocafort.
Spider-Man/Black Cat: The Evil That Men Do is terrible but that is probably as good as good girl art ever got for Marvel.
Read Dawn: Lucifer's Halo
Joseph Morris
Thanks user I'll put it on my list!
Jayden Bailey
nervous is more like it. Cyberforce started off great, but it's been in a lul, Aphrodite IV was kinda interesting but it is already dead, and Witchblade is fucking aweful.
Aaron Cook
I wanted Cover to be better, but it was still pretty solid. Kind of weird that David Mack works for the State Department though.
I think that most of the people have already seen it or are aware of it but thanks for the rec user.
Joshua Powell
>Kind of weird that David Mack works for the State Department though. nah, he's totally illuminati/lizard people. He's just using the State Department as a cover for his really insidious ideas which is to make us all better people
Brody Hernandez
I’m a Darkness fan, so I’m hoping it’s at least better than how Top Cow ended Jackie’s story.
Hellboy library vol. 3 came today. I've got vol. 4 with goon library vol. 4 coming this week, along with Punpun 4-7 and the Murder Falcon trade. I decided to fill some holes in my collection instead of getting some really hype stuff. I'll take a fat pic when it's all here.
Ryan Taylor
It's ok to like bad things user
Benjamin Price
it's weird, the universe hit such a huge crescendo and then fumbled almost everything after that. I enjoyed Artifacts but even with Marz/Sejic it wasn't really driving the universe anymore.
Is the new series going to be about Jackie?
Justin Richardson
I guess I pity you but I certainly don't empathize with or understand you.
Connor Murphy
>I certainly don't empathize with or understand you. you don't like any Yea Forums blacklisted writers?
Ian Cooper
Recently got New X-Men, the two DD omnis as well as Kill or be Killed.
Shouda waited on Kill or Be Killed. The whole series is getting an OSH this fall
Zachary Martin
>you don't like any Yea Forums blacklisted writers? what are those? All female writers?
Noah Foster
I guess I do but I hate Bendis. Frankly, his writing almost makes me dizzy.
Hunter Cook
not all female writers, but certainly most of them. I don't think anyone has a problem with nocenti or weezie simonson. off the top of my head, blacklisted writers are people who draw immediate and hivemind-like scorn, such as >jeph loab >tom king >brian bendis >jason aaron >donny cates >matt fraction basically writers you aren't "allowed" to be a fan of
Connor Allen
i will be buying that
David Gonzalez
He's going to be in it, but I get the feeling he won't be the star. Which I'm okay with.
>Jeph Loeb I think everyone agrees that he only went to shit after his son died, most people liked his stuff before
Oliver Ross
>>jeph loab hasn't done anything recently >>tom king ya he's on the shitlist cause of batfags, Slott used to be on the list cause of Spider-Man but I think Yea Forums is finally coming around to his IM and FF >>brian bendis old meme >>jason aaron ok, I legit fucking hate his Avengers. His Thor run had some flaws but fuck his Avengers is the worst >>donny cates Eh, he's most good than bad, if he would stop wanking off Knull and CGR he would be better. >>matt fraction sucks. are you saying he doesn't deserve the hate?
Cameron Wilson
I thought Donny Cates was still on his honeymoon phase with Yea Forums, also how is his Doc Strange? I've been meaning to check that one out.
Camden Barnes
Hopefully there will be a copy for when my LCS does their fall sale. Loving it too but gotta cut corners.
Brody Carter
>slott Ah I forgot about him. He's definitely blacklisted Nah people here have a big hateboner for Cates because of everything cosmic related he's done (Thanos, Knull, Cosmic Ghost Rider, Guardians)
Parker Howard
his Dr Strange was alright, but mainly in comparison to what was coming before. Waid's run is 100% better. Cates Venom and Absolute Carnage are actually good and not meme good. Partly to do with Stegmen doing the best art in his career
Adrian Powell
>Stegmen it always pisses me off how when Yea Forums talks about comics all they can talk about is the writer. hello, this is a visual medium, I would say the artist contributed 50% or more to the reason why we read these things. artists save these comics from being bad screenplays most of the time, and stegman has been fucking fantastic.
Angel Sanchez
tl;dr me on Top Cow Which one should I get first if I like Tomb Raider ?
Ryder Taylor
Cates' Strange is probably the thing of his Yea Forums likes the best.
Benjamin Cox
>Which one should I get first if I like Tomb Raider ? It would be Witchblade cause they crossed over. I'd recommend at least the first 8 issues, if you like them then continue until Christina Z stops writing, if you are iffy on them (as in if they are too 90s) then skip right to when Ron Marz takes over the book. His run with Sejic is amazing. totally, and even if the plot is a bit cliche or whatever if the art tells that story in an interesting way then it should be appreciated.
it's certainly a cheesecakey book, but honestly not nearly as much as many people talk about. She wears a full armour suit for more than half the series (besides covers)
I basically write off anybody who hates on Aaron as a big two shitter. King, Bendis, Fraction, I understand these. But Aaron has written legitimately good comics.
Benjamin Carter
His Southern Bastards was pretty cool. Any other reccs?
Xavier Harris
is Galactic Storm any good?
The Unwritten just cause of the Golden Trumpet
Joshua Campbell
not that user but I've been casually going through it and enjoying it. It's a big silly complicated space even but between all that you get some really amazing character interactions.
Grayson Ross
Happy soon-to-be Labor Day, /shelf/. Took a plunge and started reading Justice League Dark. It's a good read, I'm enjoying DC's take on mystical stuff. Man-Bat and Detective Chimp are pretty cool guys. Right now I'm trying to figure out whether to get the Masters of Suspense omnibus, the stories are fun.
Ayden Taylor
really? I wanted to like JLD SO much but the writing was god awful, it was so repetitive and just boring. Though, I will say the recent issue with the Floronic Man was good and if he keeps that other person writing for him I may jump back on the book. Tynion dialog is just god awful
Gavin Ramirez
this. I refuse to put money in Tynion the minion's pocket. fuck that hack and fuck snyder for dragging him to a career. that being said, if you enjoy JLD, keep enjoying it.
Juan Green
He has, Southern Bastards is fucking great. But his Marvel work is ass and he deserves to be shit on for it.
Samuel Morgan
I have some issues from the original run that I never read, and I want to, but goddamn I can't stand Janin.
Jack Nguyen
aarons ghost rider is great i lke janin galactic storm is good yeah
Thomas Fisher
I'm more into the idea of the JLD. I am hoping that Tynion starts writing Wondy better, because her dialogue is a real slog. And hopefully Chimp isn't going to be all depression and whiskey drinking from now on.
Wyatt Torres
that issue with Detective Chimp...think it was like 7 or something, just shortly after Witching Hour. It was so fucking repetitive. "The detective took a sip" "The Detective drank" at least 3 times every page was annoying
Henry Garcia
what a pile of shit. I can imagine the grin on this fat fuck's face as he was writing it. "I'm so clever!! scott snyder said so!"
the tracers I hate most are Deodato > Janin > Land
Land actually CAN do good work but he just rarely does
Eli Taylor
Looking at it now, I don't think Tynion realizes that we don't have to be told a character is drinking. He could just *show* the character drinking. Oh, well, can't win them all.
Jack Brooks
He was attempting to do Vertigo style writing. and that's why he failed so badly, he's not that good a scripter
Camden Watson
Land's 1 pager in Marvel 1000 was pretty enjoyable, surprisingly. Excellent layout He (literally) comes from the Scott Snyder school of wordswordswords.
I had never read a Deodato book, and I was so pissed when I opened the first issue of Berserker Unbound. It took a few pages, but I actually said "this is fucking traced" out loud when it clicked. It's a huge bummer because it's almost good, but then you notice the stiffness. Janin is so much worse than what I saw in that book. All of his recent Batman shit just look like models with filters on them. It's basically The Clown At Midnight for me.
Matthew Cruz
except for the faces that's a nice layout. But god damn do I hate his smiles, they are ALL THE FUCKING SAME!
Kevin Hall
Yeah, it's at least more bearable here because it's just one page. I couldn't deal with it for 22 pages
New Kayfabe, this time they're going through a box that someone sent them. Love these videos.
Justin Adams
I actually god a good chuckle out of the J Scott Campbell MJ page. He was quite self aware that he does the same stuff over and over again, but he was having fun with it
Based Piskor keeps shilling on Yea Forums
Julian Clark
>X-Men classics >Man-Thing Based. I was looking through some X-Men classics today
Blake Harris
Lights wrote and drew a comic herself to go with an ep
Jonathan Sullivan
based
Joshua Russell
>no Ghost Rider: Death Story ever gay
Christian Long
>Scott Snyder I finished reading the Court of Owls storyline a couple weeks ago, and I must have missed something because the CoO's actions made no sense. They're supposed to be this subtle and calculating organization, so what made them decide to send out an army of assassins? Why were the people they were killing important? It didn't seem to fit with something more in line with a noir-ish, psycho-thriller plot.
Aaron Cruz
Scott Snyder has been carried by his artists his entire career. He must be a pleasure to work with because the star studded cast of artists attached to his bibliography is peerless.
Jack Cruz
not that user, but I hear American Vampire is a very different Scott Snyder. have I been mislead?
Michael Moore
>Nah people here have a big hateboner for Cates because of everything cosmic related he's done (Thanos, Knull, Cosmic Ghost Rider, Guardians) Honestly if people didn’t take his runs cosmic wise seriously and just took them for fun we’d all have a better time. Idk I like CGR but I can also just enjoy it and not take it as canon. Spergs sperging makes it worse.
Nolan Sanchez
was his thunderbolts stuff with Ellis traced?
Adrian Ortiz
Tom is cooler than Ed and Jim
Cooper Edwards
I couldn't get into it, but Vampire stories aren't really my thing. Even then he has Rafael Albuquerque on art.
Justin Peterson
no, at least I don't think so, that seemed him doing actual art and he was...eh...very 90s but I'm not going to hate someone for that style (unless they were bad 90s). He doesn't seem to be tracing in Savage Avengers either, but sometimes like during Infinity Warps he was so lazy he didn't do panel layouts and instead of shading he just had a computer dot over the entire page. Fucking hated it
Andrew Lee
I havent see it but that sounds fucking awful
Brody Torres
I'm rewatching some Farscape right now. I know they had comics too, but are there really any tv show comic continuations that are really worth reading?
episode 2x09, Criton gets in her body and first thing he does when he's alone is play with his/her boobs and...more. The show is amazing.
Asher Butler
>first thing he does when he's alone is play with his/her boobs and...more Lol. Isn't that what we'd all do?
Ryan Young
exactly, that's why I love this show so much. It's a total fish out of water, cause it's bat shit insane with Jim henson puppetry, But through the entire series the main character is completely human and just trying to keep his feet under him in this crazy universe. TThe Jim Henson company really did some amazing work for the show
The Gargoyles one was supposedly good I think. And Buffy Season 8 was a huge deal at the time but I don't know if it was actually good or not.
Tyler Johnson
If nothing else, at least we get some decent art out of it. Could've used more female Talons, of course. It's enough to make me wonder when we'll get a proper Batman story instead of schlock like The Batman Who Laughs.
Parker Murphy
We'll get whatever sells, and right now, Snyder's name sells like hotcakes.
John Lopez
i need to buy more books
Josiah Clark
how about we flip the talk, there is enough threads about who we hate at DC. How about who is doing good work there. For me Si Spurrier is really hitting a groove with The Dreaming (though issue 12 kinda didn't work for me as much as the last 6) I am really fucking hyped for his Hellblazer. I am just glad it's going to be under Gaiman's imprint instead of normal DC
Jacob Collins
I've liked all the Black Label stuff so far, and there's a bunch more coming like Question by Lemire. I'll keep scooping Black Label stuff.
Luis Rodriguez
>I'll keep scooping Black Label stuff Did you manage to get the coveted Bat Dick issue before it was pulled from shelves?
Gabriel Powell
You're damn right I did. It was the last issue my LCS had.
Isaiah Cooper
Just picked up Akira and wytches and a tankgirl trade paperback.
Also what's shelfs opinion on cartoonist kayfabe?
Angel Hernandez
what's come out so far? Batdick and Miller Superman. I had no interest in either so I never read. But I am going to read Harleen cause I'm a big Sejic fan his twitter is fun cause he keeps retweeting porn
Jason King
Anyone else looking to this? I'm glad they decided to print the X-Statix again, because the Omnibus is too expensive for my liking.
So far, Batman Damned, Superman Year One, and Last Knight on Earth. What I like about them is it costs the same to buy the floppies as it does to buy the collected editions, so I can actually follow the issues as they come out and not feel ripped off. If you're buying mainline 4 dollar issues, it's HALF as expensive to buy the trades/OSH. The Black Label also uses good paper, versus that rung-above-newsprint that DC recently switched too.
Take a moment to bitch about DC's new paper? Earlier this year I received my Batman Rebirth Deluxe hardcover volume 4. Because of the new paper it weighs HALF as much as the prior 3 volumes which used glossy paper. But it cost the same.
Now, I'm no expert, but if something weighs half as much, if it's using a paper stock that is half the quality, then why do all the comics cost the same??? I bet this is AT&T trying to milk their fanbase for every dollar possible. They're cutting costs but not passing any savings onto us. Fucking bullshit.
Jose Bell
>because the Omnibus is too expensive for my liking. Poor newbies. Us oldfag /shelfers/ scooped it when it was inexplicably 30 dollars earlier this decade. X Statix omnibus is OG /shelfcore/.
Joshua Gomez
please don't ban me mods, it's just too good a joke
They seem to know what they're talking about it and they rarely talk about superhero books which is great
Levi Evans
I love Kayfabe. Just when I think I know a lot about comics they knock me down a peg. Those quarter bin pickup videos are the best. I learn about so much stuff I never knew existed, and they seem to know everything about them. They make me feel like such a pleb (in a good way).
Isaiah Jackson
>What I like about them is it costs the same to buy the floppies as it does to buy the collected editions you have a point. and as much hate as Batman Damned gets, I find the art just amazing (I haven't even read it, just looked at the pictures). I'm just more mad at how DC handled the controversy. It was a PERFECT marketing opportunity for them, Didio could have gone on Colbert and whatever shows he wanted to to market Black Label, but instead they censored and almost killed the entire imprint
Sebastian Cruz
Not shown on here, but my recent purchase was 20th Century Boys volume 4. I still need to buy Diamond is Unbreakable volume 2 tho.
ya, those Quarter Bin's are the best, so much stuff I never even know about. That and Strip Panel Naked are the shows to watch.
btw. Anyone want links to PanelXPanel magazine? I bought a subscription and only have a few issues so far but I could share them if people wanted
Easton Williams
Yeah, Batman is DC's golden goose (even saying this is an understatement. They're Detective Comics Comics in name and in truth.) So it makes sense that they would be highly protective of the Batman brand. The question then is why did they OK the Batdick in the first place. Or was it OK'd before the new management took over and they didn't know about it? Either way it makes some sense. As a reader who just wants to consume art it's maddening, but as a suit in an ivory tower there is reason to it.
Cooper Cox
yes, please share them, I'm not buying comic commentary when all my extra money goes to supporting actual artists
Justin Fisher
Right now I'm only enjoying Dial H and GL but I'm hyped for Hellblazer
Jayden Foster
As for current reading, I'm loving Thieves and kings. It's some black and white comic book. Medieval era, some magic, not Big 2, no capes. iboxpublishing.com/index.php
I'll upload a couple others later. I understand why you don't want to pay for this, money going to the creators is preferable, but it's honestly some really great breakdowns and interviews. If people enjoy pirating enough I do think you should toss a couple bucks their way, it's pretty cheep.
Jackson Peterson
here are the most recent two that I subscribed too
did they ever fix the art issue I heard about in the first Kabuki library?
Isaac Evans
nope, it should be fixed in the Omnibus versions though. The reason I have the Library and the Circle of Blood HC is cause of that. it's terrible but I love Kabuki so much
Justin Rogers
Do you a side by side comparison on what's exactly wrong with it?
Ryder Gonzalez
Can someone redpill me on kabuki? Looking to hop on with the new collections
Asher Nguyen
How are last knight on earth and batman damned?
Thomas Lopez
I'm admittedly a Batfag so my opinion can't totally be trusted. That being said, >Batman Damned Unbelievably good art, and some very interesting takes on characters like Zatanna, Enchantress and Etrigan. In this story Etrigan is a rapper in a cavern-like nightclub. Etrigan the rhyming demon as a rapper, makes total sense and it's great. However the plot is downright confusing, and the ending will leave you with a lot more questions than answers. Apparently it's a sequel to the graphic novel Joker from the same creative team, but it's still a very confusing ending. >Last Knight on Earth Another very confusing story, but I imagine (hopefully) that the ending will answer a lot of questions. Like Damned, unbelievable art from the superstar team of Capullo-Miki-RCO. Pretty good writing from Snyder, Batman is walking around a wasteland a la Mad Max and has the Joker's head in a lantern, and the dialogue between the two is some of the funniest and most entertaining Snyder has done. Interesting takes on several characters. Kind of like the DC version of Old Man Logan. I'm really enjoying this title. Even when I'm confused the spectacle is unbeatable.
Jaxon Fisher
I can do that tommorrow for ya if you like, but I'm too tired and lazy right now. Basic idea is that the skewed the images taller to fit the library edition. the origional Circle of Blood was formatted for wide screen style, the pages were shorter and wider.
it's David Mack's fame. Basically the first story is superhero but an extremely deep dive into japaneese culture, far more than 99% of Manga goes into, cause the main character is Ainu who are very discriminated there. but each volume is basically David Mack dealing with his own emotional problems and then showing people an example. He is very autistic so first volume is superhero, second is dreams of the death of his mother and the characters mother (his mother died early in life), then it goes on to therapy stories about how to shed onces old skin and learn to be yourself. and then it because a whole experiment on how to use art as propeganda and to make the world the best world it can be.
Robin Williams would give the book to cast members on his movies cause it was so inspirational, and ya, he is right, if whatever Kabuki is, it will make you think about your life
I really didn't enjoy Joker so that has me a tiny bit worried about damned but you sold me on last knight on earth. Might work as a fun elseworlds type
Ian White
If you didn't like Joker you probably won't like Damned, but you may as well read it an issue to see what's what. Doesn't cost you anything except a little time. But yeah Last Knight is a lot of fun and it's sad that it's billed as the last Snyder/Capullo Batman story (although I'm always suspicious about this kind of thing. Like a Brett Favre retirement.) I just adore Capullo's Batman work.
Nolan Perry
Snyder's writing is rough but man his artist partners kill it. Ill certainly give them a shot. Im also a batfag so you gotta dive through a lot of garbage to find the good stuff
Cameron Cooper
Snyder's writing is rough, but Last Knight is some of his best in a long while. That being said, his artists have always been the draw and this comic is no exception to that. He needs Capullo like Ringo needs Lennon-McCartney. > Im also a batfag so you gotta dive through a lot of garbage to find the good stuff Ain't that the truth.
Jeremiah Edwards
I feel that you need to grab sin city. It would look good on your shelf.
Asher Martin
I just want to say Christopher Mitten was a better fit for Criminal Macabre.
Connor Sullivan
>Based. I was looking through some X-Men classics today Find any interesting ones? I have some of the issues that Mignola did the covers for.
Cooper Brown
I wouldn't. They've pretty much fucked up the Epic line for X-Men (Mutant Genesis was packaged as if it was an X-Factor Epic and was missing issues/had issues not relevant to the series and missed the obvious end point, IE Muir Island Saga and given the SOP for handling X-Overs, there is a good chance that future volumes are going to be compromised with issues missing and X-Factor/New Mutants being compromised with relations to not having the required issues for Days of Future Past and Xtinction Agenda.
Ryan Green
Anybody own the invincible compendiums? The price is pretty damn cheap for a large book (tho, the size of this lad is quite intimidating). How's the binding and gutter loss?
Luis Turner
I bet you like Liefield too.
Dominic Collins
bump
Jason Hughes
No comics or manga have arrived since the thread last week, but I got a pair of Yea Forums-related figures in the post today.
how much do you guys spend on comics every month (on average)?
me, must be around € 120.00 for the last few.
Colton Morris
bumpin
Zachary Turner
That's a fine figure of a woman.
Gavin Garcia
The way Mack uses art for narration and his use of .. uh... moving symbols was astonishing to me. Even in the earlier less mixed media ones, it was such amazing visual story telling.
Matthew Johnson
Is Star Brand any good? I know jack shit about New Universe books. 150 euros at least, 400 at most. Who am I kidding, there is no "at most", there is only the buy, the buy never ends
Christian Nelson
I keep debating if I should give a copy of Kabuki to a Japanese friend whose mother passed away some years ago.
Nathaniel Gomez
Do it. Japanese people love comics.
Carter Nelson
I found a buncha those in some random boxes of i die comifs I bought when my old shop closed down and he needed help clearing stuff out. It looked interesting and a bit different.
Liam Robinson
My "budget" is $50, but I don't think I've ever kept to it. It's probably closer to $100-$125, maybe more with floppies.
Nathaniel Murphy
>decide on a budget >go over budget every time >in fact spend TRIPLE the budget I know this feel all too well. I just ordered me some Slam Dunk.
Isaiah Diaz
Started over the summer. I just grabbed the whole knightfall set for $32. One the buy list: Robin/Batgirl year one Nightwing year one Second chances Ten night of the beast Lonely place of dying Robin reborn Killing Joke Morrison’s stuff
When Legends of the Dark Knight by Steve Englehart comes out, you absolutely have to buy it. Are you exclusively interested in Batman or would you be open to other series as well?
Austin Adams
If you're looking for more Batman, I recommend Batman: The Cult. It's got some truly gorgeous art.
I see you don't have any of Denny O'Neil's classic Ra's Al-Ghul stuff like Tales of the Demon. Might want to go looking for that. Ten Nights of the Beast is collected in The Caped Crusader Vol. 1, I suggest you get that. Then there's Batman: Venom, where pre-Bane the drug Venom is introduced and Batman gets addicted to it. And then there's the whole No Man's Land saga.
Ethan Lee
Dark Mirror.

Definitely open to other things. Bat was just an easy jumping off point for a collection for me. GL, Spidey, and X-Men are my next most interested. But I also want some non cape stuff eventually. Awesome thanks. I’m a bit of a Jasonfag so I’d like as much good stuff with Jason as a robin as a can. Just because there’s so little of it compared to every other robin. Right on. Every time I ask about older Bat stuff I always see O’Neil’s name. Will check it out. Is there a go to omnibus for him?
Grayson Watson
holy shit
Aaron Morales
> Is there a go to omnibus for him? No. There's a Neal Adams omnibus and they worked together but nevermind that, this book is what you need amazon.co.uk/Batman-Tales-Demon-Dennis-ONeil/dp/1401299431/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=tales of the demon&qid=1567433565&s=gateway&sr=8-1 >Definitely open to other things Buy John Ostrander's Suicide Squad. All of it. Books 1-8, Deadshot: Beginnings, and From the Ashes. Also Birds of Prey. The Chuck Dixon run starts it off and Gail Simone's run is where it gets really great. Follow that up with Gail Simone's Secret Six. Denny O'Neil's The Question is also great but I'm not sure you can find it anymore at a reasonable price. And then there's Mike Grell's Green Arrow, starting with The Longbow Hunters and followed up by books 1-9 (sadly there's stuff from both Green Arrow and The Question that has never been collected and probably never will be, a lot of them crossovers between the two) To move on to Marvel, get Frank Miller's Daredevil. Books 1-3, Born Again, The Man Without Fear. Love's Labors Lost is a trade that collects Daredevil material from between Miller's original DD run and Born Again, a lot of it done my Denny O'Neil and David Mazzucchelli. From there the two Epic Collections by Ann Nocenti. I'm just throwing street level stuff at you because you like Batman.
Evan Allen
I heard that Batman/Spawn story was a bunch of batwank. Like it had fucking Batman physically overpower Spawn and stuff.
Parker Wood
I am indeed looking forward to it.
Ryan Price
The budget is really just to appease my wife. Which is funny, because I always seem to have an excuse as to why I went over and she doesn't care, so I don't know why we're kidding ourselves.
Christian Scott
It's only fair for you to buy new books when she's buying new shoes and bags all the time.
Hudson Ross
That seems to be when he realized his could use poser models as models for his work. He still put work into it though. There's a miniseries called "Witches" around the same time, and it has much worse art from him.
Ryan Young
He also throws a batarang at Spawn's face, and a hobo fixes it up with a shoelace in the following issue.
Christopher Garcia
>Is Star Brand any good? I know jack shit about New Universe books. It's pretty great, it's one of these "real person gets powers, starts dicking around with it, increasingly fucks up" kind of stories, because there's some drama in between as well as the whole mystery behind the Starbrand. The story gets sort of convoluted near the last arc when John Byrne takes over, but by then the entire New Universe line was clawing for survival since it was about to get cancelled, so it was the expected outcome. It is still one of the best series of the line, although I am quite fond of it in general (DP7, Psi-Force and Nightmask are charming too). >is Galactic Storm any good? Yeah, it's pretty good too, it's one of these early cosmic events that has everyone from all the corners of cosmic appear for at least a cameo. If they had to use an event to introduce new cosmic characters in the MCU without relying on Annihilation or whatever, Galactic Storm would be perfect since that's the very first appearance of StarForce as a team, and thew throw down against the Imperial Guard. And well, Quasar's front and center in it, which is one of my favorite characters.
then what's the best way to read Claremont X-Men? the omni's are way OOP been around $300/month. I gotta cut back a bit. though this month I'm going to blow right through that again cause of local comiccon do it, but warn them that it will not be an easy read for them, but that it WILL help them in the end. Even for people who haven't lost family it can be a heavy read. But it's always rewarding
I think after Death of the Inhumans it's very, VERY difficult to take anything he writes in cosmic as "fun". That's the turning point, if everything he wrote was mindless "fun" like the CGR solo, most people wouldn't mind. And I'm saying this as someone who also disliked that solo, but still took it as some non-canon AU (which he still found a way to canonize, believe it or not).
Julian Cooper
I've finished Bone and loved it, moving on to Usagi Yojimbo next. Outside of Hellboy and its spin offs, what other great (non-cape) comics am I missing out on?
>jeph loab Loeb is sort of justified, though I don't think he's done anything recently beyond a page in Marvel Comics #1000. >tom king This one is definitely mostly Batfags like the other guy said, although he certainly has gotten very formulaic. >brian bendis Pretty self-explanatory >jason aaron A big meme too and it's mostly because of Jane Thor (overblown hate in my opinion), but even though I don't like what he's doing in Avengers currently and what he did with Strange and Thanos, he's done some other good stuff that deserves attention. >donny cates This one is weird because he's still loved everywhere else DESPITE the obvious problems he has, but the hate to me is very justified. People don't like his cosmic stuff in general (and he's gotten mixed responses lately everywhere else) but his Venom remains his most solid work (although I hate symbiotes, I'm just being balanced here) >matt fraction I haven't seen anyone hating on Fraction beyond Defenders, to be honest.
Logan Edwards
>I haven't seen anyone hating on Fraction beyond Defenders his Thor is the worst Thor run
Brody Nelson
It depends. But around $150
Jack Ramirez
The one legitimately bad of that list is King. The rest has his ups and downs.
Hunter Bell
Usually around 200€, some months I go a little bit crazy and spend around 300
Henry Anderson
Been reading through Cerebus again. I'm buying the issues that I don't have phonebooks for. The letters pages are ridiculous.
That X-Men cover is sweet.
I like them a lot. They actually cover books I'm interested in and exposed me to tons of stuff I've never heard of.
$100ish on collections, $50 on small press, $50 on floppies (though I've gone well above that this month)
>The one legitimately bad of that list is King And Loeb, and Bendis. C'mon, even King has his ups and downs too (Omega Men, Vision).
Eli Lee
Omega Men and Vision fucking sucks. At least Bendis has Alias and Daredevil, and you can include his first crime comics and Powers too. Loeb with the colors, Batman & Superman, his other works with Sale.
Juan Ross
Well okay, I think this is all a matter of perspective, because if you asked me about Donny Cates I'd say most of his output has also been terrible (CGR, DOTI, Thanos Wins, GOTG, compared to Venom + adjacent and Strange), but for some the good outweighs the bad. So it depends on where you draw the line.
Asher Russell
>Omega Men and Vision fucking sucks. wow, you really swallowed the memes. Vision and Omega Men are showing how he can use the 9 panel grid without being over indulgent. Vision is great because each issue has a distinct theme.
Christopher Walker
Hello /shelf/, I was planning on going to SDCC this year, but it is likely that my plans will not align with the times for the con. Are there any really good cons in the US? I was planning on mostly going to meet comic artists and writers, specifically Denny O'Neil, Zdarsky, and some other guys. Thank you.
Leo Jones
Excellent suggestions user. Everyone should read these
>Vision is great because each issue has a distinct theme. Something not being completely lazy doesn't make it great. It's pure mediocrity that is somehow considered one of the greatest comics, so I'm guessing Big 2 comics had been extremely shit until it came out.
Jonathan Ramirez
>Madame Xanadu Anything similar to this story? I think I read it once.
Kevin Rogers
whatever, if you can't see the skill and craft that went into it then we are done here. The art alone is amazing storytelling. Main thing I have read similar from DC is Books of Magic by Reiber or Fables, not female led though. Outside of DC maybe Artesia?
>looking up omnibuses on IST for fun >see that the Marvel Now omnibus from 2013 is still in stock That thing really didn't sell well, did it?
Joseph Brooks
well, the villains literally try to rape her in the first fifteen pages of the first issue
Caleb Nguyen
Lonely place of dying isn't in print anymore but it is included with the Death in the Family trade which you should read first anyway.
Owen Brown
fucking dc
Kevin Gomez
Those collections rarely ever sell, to be fair. >obligatory rape scene >DC Pick two
Hunter Harris
I don't remember that
Ethan Sanders
Off the top of my head, the notable con's with talent after SDCC and NYC are:
Emerald City Comic Con (quickly becoming #3 as far as big US cons I think) C2E2 HeroesCon (probably the most artist oriented con) Baltimore Comiccon MegaCon (maybe?)
There's probably some obvious ones I'm missing.
Justin Brown
Dragon Con in ATL had over 80,000 and usually has a lot of talents. Although it's a Science Fiction Convention, not just comics.
The problem with the Neal Adams Batman stuff is that in the late 80s, Adams redrew a huge chunk of his Batman run and used his legend status with DC to ensure that any Neal Adams centric collection has to use his "special edition" version. Which he redid in the 00s, when he demanded DC let him recolor his run when they told him they were going to do a reprint on glossy high end paper for TPBs.
This even carried over to the Showcase Presents volumes, which use the redrawn version of Adam's Batman run.
It started as Jim Shooter basically writing a biography of himself as a super-hero (which led to John Byrne and John Ostrander writing a mean spirited version of Star Brand in the Legends mini-series that maimed himself on accident and got his ass kicked by Guy Gardner).
Shooter got forced out of Marvel and John fucking Byrne took over the book. Byrne had Star Brand massacre the entire city of Pittsburg (where Shooter lived) in a fit of retardation and then turned the book into a story about the Star Brand powers being passed around, until it got canceled.
The Byrne (especially the Pitt one-shot) is so-so but the Shooter issues are pretty dire but required for context for the Byrne run.
Mason Myers
Starbrand RULES. It’s so fascinating. Also Jeff Parker and Javier Pulido did a one shot in the 00s that “explains” why Starbrand changed so much between Shooter and Byrne
There’s also a great Giffen one shot fill in somewhere. The whole run is worth reading
Logan Barnes
The Essentials are the best way to read Claremont's X-Men run.
Granted they are not perfect (they are missing some tie-ins, especially Iron Fist #15, Marvel Fanfare #1-4, Magik and Wolverine minis and the Secret Wars II mini-series material that set up Magneto joining the X-Men) but they have all of the crossover issues from the other X-Books and for the most part, organized way better than most of the omnibuses and MMWs.
Jacob Wood
Yeah pretty much, as soon as Byrne took over and made some sort of closed loop where the Star Brand was part of a cycle that revolved around Kenneth, I sort of checked out, but thankfully that was the last arc. I did like the "realistic" way in which the disaster of The Pitt was portrayed, there was this sort of "Threads", Chernobyl-like dread hanging over the huge crater. Everything before that is very underrated, and even the tragedy of his love life increasingly getting ripped apart was worth reading. I wish they had brought some of that into 616 somehow when Ken moved onto the main universe.
Caleb Jenkins
but aren't those just black and white? Western comics, and superheroes specifically, and made with colour for a reason. Unless the comic is made to be in black and white it's missing a huge component of the storytelling
Daniel Peterson
Just bought Final Crisis, what am I in for?
Zachary Williams
Hot take Byrne is better in black and white
Nathaniel Thomas
don't think I could read his She-Hulk without that nice green skin
>"This isn't the New Universe. My book operates on Marvel time..." Okay, that's awesome?
Benjamin Jenkins
kino but you gotta read it atleast twice and know the dcu
Kevin Morgan
She-Hulk is much more interesting with her 4th wall breaking than Deadpool is.
Benjamin Gray
Well that's easy for me because aside from Duggan, I never liked the way it was used by most writers. It was always dated references and shit like that, barely anything self-referential like that page.
Austin Long
>know the dcu How much do I need to know?
Gavin Edwards
Hot take: Byrnes she hulk is unfunny masturbatory crap, and Slott and Soules runs are far superior
Jack Reyes
It's odd, how much better the old art looks sometimes. Not to mention that that one page's events would probably be used for oh half an issue the way things are done now. >Reading Immortal Hulk >huh, they did cut his head off.
Austin Moore
oof, that's a real hot take there. The art is Soule's run is trash though...do you really like it that much?
Lucas Mitchell
Trying to get more into American(for the most part) indies/non-cape stuff, making a list of series to check out. I've read a handful of Image like Saga, Alex + Ada, Walking Dead, Tokyo Ghost, Wicked + Divine, and some other stuff. My list of thing to check out so far:
DMZ Scud Old City Blues Mind MGMT The Massive Incognito Criminal Queen and Country The Couriers Blacksad Stray Bullets 100 Bullets Lazarus Zero Alan's War The Losers The Activity Global Frequency Stumptown Wasteland
Don't know if there's a common theme in there at all but I'm into crime, action, sci-fi, western, and comedy stuff so if anyone else as any non-cape recommendations I'm open.
Brayden Hernandez
I will agree with that poster as well with the thing about b/w art looking great, specially Byrne's. The classic Star-Lord stories (written by Claremont and drawn by Byrne) are among the best I've seen from that time and it's all b/w. (The quality is questionable given it's from a scan, but the printed copy looks better than this)
I'll agree that it's masturbatory, but it's still funny.
Zachary Bennett
I loved the art from that run. It was cartoonish and fun. Javier Pulido right? He's one of my faves.
Josiah Ramirez
maybe I'm missing something but everything is extremely flat and 2D, there isn't a very good depth perspective to it at all.
Wyatt Anderson
For me it fit the tone of the story being told very well, which was basically a sitcom
Ethan Brooks
The celestial objects are also floating discs that are always facing Earth, thus further lying to us by claiming they're spheres. Spread the truth!
Adrian Richardson
fun bit of trivia: photos taken by hubble are actually taken in black and white, and colorized after
Thomas Martin
really didn't expect this much GL stuff in Final Crisis, i'm presently surprised
Bentley Mitchell
a bit more complex than that my Hubble book is there. the photos are usually put through different lenses so the CCD's pick up certain wavelengths and yes, the colour is added after but it is still showing the proper colours for the wavelengths. Unless of course they are adding in infrared and UV
Lincoln Baker
thank you for correcting me. always happy to learn
Hudson Jones
I mean yeah, they do not colorize them afterwards but rather use the same techniques to discern the elements of each celestial body through the wavelengths in order to give them the proper color. Rarely we get to see the actual colors of galaxies and star clusters for this reason, but we can definitely see the ones in planets and such given the closeness.
Asher Lee
Considering the alternatives, the Essentials collect most of it and are cheaper and more available. At the very least seeing Cockrum's, Byrne's, and Romita Jr's pencils and inks ain't half bad
Aaron Thomas
This. I had to read the last two issues twice and make a post on here to actually understand and appreciate what happened.
Nolan Lopez
reading final crisis and I come across this part >The Flaw is sealed. scabbed over. With divine metals is this where they got the idea for dark nights metal?
Leo Bailey
I used to feel this way, but color isn't always better. So much detail is lost when you color something. It's crazy how much stuff I think looks better in black and white compared to how I felt before. Especially in modern comics, where coloring is a lot more likely to butcher artwork than elevate it. I see the inks or even just the pencils and think to myself "what the fuck happened"? There's a handful of colorists working today that elevate artwork, but the rest are doing the opposite.
I dunno. I just flip through so many comics nowadays and think to myself "god I wish this was in black and white."
Depends on the colourist, true. But ones like Jordie Bellaire and Matt Hollingsworth always really kick the comic up a few notches. Sure Superhero comics are a lot of the time lazy coloured, especially in the 90s, but they are an essential part of the art and when done write can really frame the tone of the comic
>Jordie Bellaire and Matt Hollingsworth Yup, agreed. Those are among the "handful" I was referring to. I just want to clarify that I don't always think color is better nor do I always think black and white is better, I was just saying how I've evolved from my earlier stance of "black and white is always bad." It's something I've really come to appreciate over time.
Someone earlier in the thread used John Byrne as an example. I would argue his best work is OMAC, which is a black and white comic, and I think that comic would be lesser if it were colored, for example. The opposite would be your example, a Thor comic. I couldn't imagine a Thor comic being black and white because Thor's world is so very colorful. Asgard and the rest of the 9 realms are bursting with color and it would be lesser in black and white. Versus say, Batman who operates in the dark, dirty, crime riddled streets of Gotham. I would have no issue with Batman being in black and white, often I would actually prefer it.
oh don't get me wrong, I don't mean that black and white is always inferior. But generally when something is drawn with the intent of colours I feel it should be kept with them. There are going to be exceptions but when talking about collecting all of Claremont X-Men I would want the colours cause especially around the Brood Saga I can't see it working without colour nearly as well
Brayden Carter
>when talking about collecting all of Claremont X-Men I would want the colours cause especially around the Brood Saga I can't see it working without colour nearly as well I can agree with that. It's worth saying though that (if you can afford it, or care enough to) it's cool to see the same comic in black and white and in color, because they'll offer a different experience. To use a music comparison, it's like listening to The Beatles in mono and in stereo. Some songs are better in stereo, some (I would argue most) songs are better in mono, but it's still worthwhile to have them both because you'll get a different experience each way.
I love X-Men in color, and their world is very colorful one, but the earlier user was right when he said John Byrne is fucking great in black and white. If I had the shelf space and the resources I would want a copy of each.
It does look cleaner in ink, but who's at fault here? Is it the colorist or the ink for getting the eyes different? I feel like the inked image has more presence to it, but doesn't really capture any emotion or action. He's just striking a pose and looking pretty. The colorists looks like they took "liberties" either way.
John Perry
it helps to know darksied and the 4th world stuff and theres plenty of references to morrisons other work but theres not really like a must read list
William Rogers
ok, maybe I'm wrong about the Byrne stuff, that does look great. But I still hold that The Brood Saga needs colour, there are just a lot of scenes that have the colour really add to it. Same with Bret Blevins on New Mutants.
Brandon Murphy
Slott's the best She-Hulk and Ben Grimm writer
Ryan Adams
no, they fucking suck
Jace Butler
I think there could be a version of that cover in color that surpasses the inked version, but those colors are just dreadful. It's too dark and gimmicky photoshop stuff like the glowing eyes and "energy circle" just feel out of place and distracting. I feel like all of Jim Lee's stuff colored by Alex Sinclair is better in black and white. And that's not a knock on Alex Sinclair, his recent work on Superman Year One is terrific and definitely elevates that book. > But I still hold that The Brood Saga needs colour, there are just a lot of scenes that have the colour really add to it. I don't disagree. All this stuff is certainly a case-by-case basis. Depends on the title, depends on the locale, depends on the story, depends on the artist, etc. It is nice to have options when they're available
here I have to argue, the colouring really goes a long way to creating the tone of the book. It actually adds to the horror for me, what you posted doesn't really give me emotion.

I'm enjoying Morrison's Doom Patrol and was wondering if I can get into his GL run without having to read any other GL runs or do I have to at least read Rebirth GL? At the moment, I'm just reading Johns GL and will try to get into the other GL books at some point.
Christian Butler
Honestly the colors of Immortal Hulk are what's holding it back from being a truly great book for me. It's mean to be a horror book but the colors betray it. Even outside of the horror genre it's just very paint by numbers house style coloring for the most part. Everything about the comic, right down to the covers is remarkable- except the colors. If it had, say, Francesco Francavilla doing the colors, it would be a masterpiece. Immortal Hulk is a book I'd definitely prefer to have in black and white. I mean, just look at those pencils. Incredible. I don't think those colors are very good. It's far too bright. There is very little contrast. It's just house style coloring. It's not *bad* but there's nothing noteworthy about it.
>I don't think those colors are very good what don't you like about it? the entire page is made so the top is bright an colourful but as you drill down into the page it gets sicklier and sicklier, both in terms of the pencils and the colouring. what it's doing is drawing your eye to the center and making you focus into a sicker colour pallet.
Nolan Adams
The Batman Adventures vol. 1-4, especially if you like the animated series and Bronze Age Batman.
Jack Price
I already said what I think it could be doing better. I've seen truly great coloring, and that isn't it. It's not bad but it's not winning any Eisners. Batman Black Mirror is what truly great horror colors look like.
From what I can tell, it's doing its own thing. The most you'd need to know is some names of planets/aliens and basic Green Lantern lore.
Leo Evans
There's some pages better than others, but Mounts' coloring is inconsistent that way. See , they explained it better than me. I agree that page in particular is good (and in fact, that one pages' colors were also good), but some pages fall flat precisely because the coloring fails to convey the depth of the scene and it feels off-key. One good example of this is the coloring in the Avengers brawl, where it was supposed to be a past-dawn fight but it has some weird neon coloring that doesn't quite fit. Funnily enough Mounts did the coloring of Holtz' inks in this issue (#14) and it turned out great, so perhaps it has to do with Bennett's shading in some parts that is harder to convey in the colors.
Forgot about that issue. That is truly great horror coloring. If every issue had that I would have no cause to complain.
Justin Phillips
I don't disagree that the colorists didn't do the best job, but my issue is still what the inked image is trying to convey. Is he taking debris unphased or is he destroying it with his powers? Was the line artist drawing freehand, from reference, or request? I don't know the context. The left leg is more distracting than the energy circle honestly. It looks bad on both panels, but worse with color. The face was the focal point and everything else is just filled in.
Luke Myers
that's nice colours but doesn't give me any horror vibes at all. Then again, most of my love of horror comics is painted or other mixed media stuff. I find IH is doing a good job on colours though. ok that's better, really good composition there too.
>Is he taking debris unphased or is he destroying it with his powers? It seems clear to me from the linework that he's blasting it away But yes the left leg is definitely distracting in the black and white page. In defense of that, he was probably drawing it with the intention that the colors would be covering it up, which they did.
Asher Bailey
Finally bought a frame for this Jeffrey Alan Love print I received through his kickstarter campaign for his book The Thousands Demon Tree....I goofed though and didnt put in enough to get the book just a print
Blasting it away with what though? Its not clear at he's blasting it away with his energy powers in the inked image. It looks more like the line artist drew him in a rough pose and used the action lines as a way to maintain the focal point of the image and forgot to elaborate on the action itself. Working backwards. Without context (ie script, editor notes) its just as easily possible that the colorist had to fix what the line artist failed to convey.
Ayden Ward
>Blasting it away with what though? With his manliness. Real answer, Lee almost certainly drew this with directions for Sinclair to color it a certain way.
Michael Gomez
Alright, thanks. Can't wait to read it.
Thomas Peterson
>Stray Bullets Move that to the top of your list. Begin at the beginning, though. No jumping ahead. I'd recommend getting the Uber Alles Omnibus. Killers comes next, followed by the present series, Sunshine and Roses. Young Liars is another great Lapham series that was truncated by poor sales. Still darn swell.

I don’t have pics but I just got Bad Gateway, the collection from the guy who did Abelard and satania. How is the huge bone collection, is the binding okay?
Y'think Ultimate Spider-Man will ever get reprints? Most of that stuff is OOP.

Mark Millar's Ultimates is getting a rerelease soon, so I assume the rest of the Ultimate line will too. I'm just hoping they also rerelease Ewing's Ultimates even if it doesn't belong to the line (merely out of branding), because it's a crime it's only in regular trades.
Gabriel Gray
>I'm just hoping they also rerelease Ewing's Ultimates I can see this happening for sure. Ewing's brand has exploded in the last year

I wish Mort Cinder was longer. They could've told endless stories about his life.
I was tempted to grab that Superboy trade at some point because of O'Neill's artwork, despite knowing absolutely nothing about the character or caring about DC whatsoever. It pulled me in that much.
Cameron Gutierrez
what the fuck is that Hero book? I mean that cover just looks plain fetish fuel and peaks my interest
also...I want to like Howard Cheykin but the books I've read of his are just totally insane
Zachary Roberts
It's H.E.R.O a 2003 reboot of Dial H for hero, I quite liked it when I read it but it was some time ago.
Carter Baker
Not as favorably as you're being led to believe. Though I do own issue #1 of her 2000 run in relatively good condition that I've just been holding onto all these years. The new run seemed fun and has good art. Despite what may be an unpopular opinion, I prefer the new look over the jester anyday.
>despite knowing absolutely nothing about the character
I don't know much about him either. The only comic I had which gave me some exposure to was in The Death of Superman. I heard he has Tactile Telekinesis, I don't even know what that means, so I want to know what that's all about. It helps that it's book #1.
H.E.R.O is a comic series surrounding the H Dial seen in the Dial H for Hero series. these 3 issues specifically focuses on a guy who uses the dial that changes him into the heroine Shocking Suzi/Electro Lass. It's not a happy story.
Chaykin is nutty. I was surprised to find Black Kiss since I heard it was banned in Leafland.
Parker Scott
Unpopular opinion but I actually kinda liked the Stewart/Fletcher run of Batgirl, even if half the reason I was buying it was for the art.
Lincoln Gonzalez
>reboot of Dial H oh, THAT is what that is from, I kept seeing it pop up in fetish threads on Yea Forums and thought it was some fanfic or something.
Jaxson Watson
Babs Tarr is a treasure.
Dominic Young
Which is better to buy, the New Mutants Epic Collections or the New Mutant Classics volumes?
Ryder Parker
I wish she'd do more superhero stuff, I think she would have been great on Silk when after Stacey Lee left
Jace Reed
For starters, you still need to buy the Curse of the Valkyrie Epic because those issues are only available in that TPB.
As for collections; the Classic TPBs only go up until #54 (Claremont's last issue).
The first Epic Collection (Renewal) has material the first two Classic trades don't have: the story that introduces Karma, the Marvel Team-Up Annual with Clock and Dagger that gets a direct sequel in the Sienkiewicz run (#23-25), and the Magik mini-series. It's worth picking up over the Classics, but you'll miss the Hellions introduction story that isn't in Renewal but is in V2 of the Classic line.
When it comes to the Sienkiewicz run however, I'd have to say the Classics are better simply because the Sienkiewicz run ends on a cliffhanger and Demom Bear ends several issues shy of the ending of the Karma/Shadow King story. The Classic trades however, splits evenly with #18-25 and Annual #1 in V3 and V4 being #26-34, giving you the end of the Karma/Shadow King saga in volume 4.
Also, IIRC, V5 of the Classic line omits material from Secret Wars II #9 detailing how the New Mutants were resurrected after being killed off in issue #37. Those pages will probably be added to Epic V3 along with Secret Wars 2 #5 (first Boom Boom). Similarly, there is a good chance we might get Fallen Angels included in the Epics (they run concurrent with New Mutants #53-60)
Christopher Flores
Here's hoping the hurricane doesn't fuck up my delivery too hard.
Dylan Scott
Oh they weren't listed in any particular order but thanks for the info about the collected editions. I definitely want to check out his Detective run as well
Gavin Thompson
I often see those Kesel Harley collections suggested on Amazon, I sometimes wonder if I'd enjoy them, I liked Harley in Gotham City Sirens.
Brayden Lewis
Well all the Epics I have so far are excellent. Like, X-Men: The Gift has the Uncanny issues, an annual, X-Men/Alpha Flight and a Nightcrawler mini I didn't even know existed before. Everyone's most likely got the big crossover tpbs already, and I think this is the first time I've ever seen a discussion about Epics that's criticised them for missing things.
David Wright
Realistically, will they ever reprint the first two Avengers omnis?
Asher Walker
they're fun
Angel Gonzalez
Why not thread? Hell a spool of fishing line makes more sense than a shoestring.

Plenty of great Godzilla comics. IDW is reprinting some of their runs again so more new content soon I'm sure.

is this any good? i'm considering buying the trades
I remember seeing recently that they put out something that had an original-looking release of one of his issues. I think it might have been in either the Batman: 80 Year Anniversary or the Joker omni
Ethan Baker
Excellent issue #1. Then it never lived up to it afterwards, and has what might be the worst ending that Ennis has ever done.
Oliver Rodriguez
Not really. It's shallow.
Alexander Hughes
babs is indeed a treasure.
Xavier Collins
Today's haul, I haven't posted or lurked on here for fucking years. I got John Hanckiewicz's last self-published (edition of 100),part of his series about little-known artists, that was a fucking great comic...
Can anyone confirm or deny the fact that a live action TV show is being developed that's based on Tom King's 2016 ('17?) suburban family-horror murderthon comic arc? The Vision was always my favourite in the comics.
They are indeed producing a show with Vision and Scarlet Witch set in a 50s style suburbia, but it remains to be seen how much of an influence The Vision is on it.
Gavin Rivera
Band For Life by Anya Davidson. There's also this really great comic by this German cartoonist with a really cutesy style which is about The Beatles pre-fame Berlin years and Stuart Sutcliffe's relationship with whatshername...really really nice drawings. Don't forget all those officially sanctioned comics each devoted to a band, I think the company was actually called RockStar comics but they're pretty fucking ropey desu.
I love Brandon graham so much. If I made comics it would be just like his
Kevin Myers
What are some good obscure American comics?
Isaiah Rivera
Is, er, is *that* the "full armour suit" of which you speak, Yea Forumsmrde? This is undoubtedly the worst Ross image I have ever seen. I know he's an incredibly capable artist, his skecthes have a real spark to them, then he just has to get all his mates in their cosplay gear and completely over-render everything until the image is dead on the page.Rugg is kind of inconsistent, Piskor is consistent as hell, I think Hip-Hp Family tree is the only comic to go from being published as a graphic novel series to being published as a floppy. If you're a capefag try his X-Man book, everyone's being raving about it and it's a great meta-concept. Love Cartoonist Kayfabe I was a toal Wrighton fiend at tis time and the stripped-down, less rendered look to his art was a real disappointment to me, it has to be said. However Batman Vs. Alien Vs. Predator or whatever it's called is a real guilty pleasure for me...that crocoalien double splash...yikes Non-cape as in still genre or non-cape in the "pretentious slice of life/weird arty shit" variant of "non-capeshit"? Do you like bitter comedy? Give Hate a try at least, specifically Buddy Does Seattle. Never thught I'd see Yuichi Yokoyama and Legends of the Dark Knight in the same haul! That's some catholic taste ya got there Loved Wizzywig and I met farel Dalyrymple at Thought Bubble 2014, really nice guy. A couple of my mates really like that Lando stuff and their little collective (is it DNA Weapons or something? I fucking hate Leon Sadler so much), Lando is cool but I woudn't pay money for his work, I do love BDP though, I have every Antoine Cosse book/comic they put out. Thinking of getting that Windowpane collection That Black Kiss price tag..50 what?!?! I old enough to remember the fooferah around that comic when it came out Holy shit thanks would watch the hell out of that if it cribs from King's series a good bit. Cheers
Christopher Lopez
>that Stokoe note Huh. Did he do that in Half Century War? I really need to read that already.
I forgot about Jeffrey Lewis, you know the "anti-folk" guy who got lumped in with Moldy Peaches and those type of bands? Well he has a self-published comic (action pretty fucking good, he does everything, writes, draws, letters, inks etc, it's called Fuff and you can buy bundles and such on his site. If you don't like alternative-type indie it might not be for you but his autobio stuff is usually actually pretty fucking interesting
farel is such a great artist. i love his Wrenchies that world he built, and he's got a follower in me.
that Lando book is highbrow as fuck. i liked it a lot.
i want more piskor too...
alejandra gutierrez has a real dope style in that Twisted Romance, and another lady that i can't remember her name.
you got any reccs?
Jack Anderson
I'm worried also because today it was supposed to arrive to my courier in Miami, which is pretty close. They actually had to skip a day because of USA's stupid "Labor Day" (should be May 1st), so the arrival was moved to today.
Sorry, sorry! I meant Ellis, not Bendis. Brainfart, my bad.
Alexander Turner
thanks, mates. saved me some money. was afk for a while, sorry for the late reply
Andrew Miller
fuck, i love his music. seems like i have to buy his comics too
Jace Torres
Thinking about it, would have to sell the ones i already have tho. Is there a big difference story-wise or is there just some extras ?
Colton White
Can anyone recommend some horror/supernatural western stories or series? I just finished reading the All Hallows Eve story from Jonah Hex vol. 2 and I loved it. I'm already aware of his weirder books.
Nicholas Scott
Ice Cream Man is really good. It's a existential horror anthology comic.
Christian Cooper
hobo can buy sewing kit at Dollar or convinient store.
Easton Jackson
what if hobo got ipad
Caleb Bell
Then hobo can Google just how much bigger a shoelace is than a needle eye. Might as well be a millionaire and try with a camel.
I should be getting Hellboy and the BPRD 1954 and 1955 soon.
Hey, I have that book two. It's nice and thick. I did notice a couple of mistakes in my version. Got mine like 10 years ago or something.
Eli Nguyen
Got to fix that ordering. And I have the same Earthsea book at home. Also the Hellboy books.
Jayden Howard
Now that's some nice stuff right there.
Alexander Ortiz
Oh nice, the Die trade paperback is thicker than I thought it was going to be. Can't wait to have it in my hands.
Kayden Morales
It's got essays in the back.
Zachary King
I DO feel like Joe Golem, Jenny Finn and Mr. Higgins Comes Home should be next to the other Mignola related stuff.
Jeremiah Lee
Ah, that explains it. I'm wondering whether Gillen is considering releasing the Die RPG as an actual rulebook at some point: diecomic.com/rpg/
Gavin Butler
Corben is great.
Tyler Young
I remember complimenting your range of stuff in the past thread so I will not do it again other than, nice.
Ryan Russell
Just curious now, don't get offended: are you a filthy flaming faggot or a dumb woman, or both?
Noah Martinez
I'd say that the two best colorist in the business are Dave Stewart and Dean White.
Ayden Brown
They're up there for sure. My two favorites are Matt Hollingsworth and FCO
Joshua Jones
Meant to also include
Easton Ward
>not getting the Remastered Edition I'm sure there's a reason but what is it?
Camden Hall
Seconded.
Aaron James
So what's this? A book about manga?
Connor Walker
Yeah, it has a whole bunch of manga artists with a bio in english, french and german with some example pages and covers that they've done.
Parker Cook
I mostly know Hollingsworth for his early Hellboy stuff and Batman: White Knight. Quite a huge leap.
Matthew Nguyen
I'm tight on money and it was only about $9 all said and done.
Dylan Adams
Do you guys think Ben Caldwell is a good cartoonist?
Nathaniel Brooks
Yes, yes I do. I only own one comic of his thought but he has gotten better since that one.
Charles Jenkins
Which comic?
Josiah Morales
It's his old adaptation of the Dracula novel.
Sebastian Bailey
I want to get one of his sketches, but they're around $80.
Jayden Stewart
I usually see him selling stuff on twitter. often around 60 bucks? But I guess it might end up higher with shipping.
Isaiah Baker
Yeah, that seems about right. I was just wondering if that was an abnormal price for a sketch.
James Brooks
It really depends on the artist but nah, it's not high compared to some others. But those might be bigger names to. In thiscase it's not really a commision and rather a finished old sketch so I guess there's that too.
Brody Barnes
Speaking of that Dracula comic. Now I can't find it. It doesn't seem to be in my vampire shelf section where it should be.
Joshua Carter
redpill me on Josie and the Pussycats Were the comics as bad as that movie?
Charles Peterson
Thank you user!
I have it organized by Mignolaverse, then everything else alphabetically, maybe I'll add the other mignola titles next to his Mignolaverse stuff. Baltimore and Joe Golem are in the same universe. I dont know if jenny finn and mr Higgins fall undergone of those universes
I'll have to check it out, thanks for the reminder user I have no idea why I have not checked out sin city yet. Is there a recommend way to collect it?
John Jackson
Wait Baltimore and Joe Golem are in the same universe? And nah, Finn, and Higgins aren't but they're all written by Mignola so I kinda want to pair them up, and he is probably my favorite comic book guy so there's that. But you do you man.
Jeremiah Fisher
Yep, I have no idea where they over lap but I have read in different places that they take place in the same universe, maybe there is a connection in the novels?
Josiah Parker
I mean I've read a fair share of the comics and a bit of the novel when it comes to Baltimore but I have yet to take on Golem. I mean there is a long time between them but I just assumed they were separate since this is the first I hear about it. Might have to look into this.
Caleb King
Yes one of the most underrated
Jeremiah Ross
>finish bagging and boarding a bunch of floppies I've bought but have yet to read at 1 in the morning >sip a beer Ah, it's a beautiful night, /shelf/.
Andrew Williams
>bagging and boarding Hope you're reading to have to replace the bags and boards in 5-10 years.
Ian Hughes
redpill me
Charles Turner
Better that than to replace the comics!
Owen Jones
I really enjoyed his work on Hellboy and Shadows on the Grave.
Nolan Carter
nice. what things made you think that?
Easton Williams
Yeah so do I and I love Dave Stewart's colors but it's really nice when Corben does his own colors like pic related.
Bill Boichel talked about on an Cartoonist Kayfabe episode something to do with the chemicals from the plastic damaging the comic over time.
Connor Torres
So with Spawning reaching 300 issues I gots to ask you mugs, is any of it worth reading?
Robert Richardson
no
Jason Edwards
How did Todd's art sell so well?
Luis Hall
I'll defend Todd's artstyle. His storytelling though...
Ryder Martin
I mean you could easily just get competent writers with stories to tell and team up but somehow that never worked out.
Christopher Thompson
I mean the issues by Greg Capullo have great art but that's the best thing I can say about Spawn, oh and the Sam and Twitch series by Bendis was mostly ok.
Thomas Gutierrez
90's. I don't like it but I can understand it's appeal. You could always read the first 20 issues and get a glimpse of it.
Reminder that William Mesner-Loebs Wonder Woman is up to pre-order on Amazon, you guys better get this, if it gets cancelled I'll go to your shelves and I'll get the numbered trades all mixed up.
Jose Cox
It is Wednesday, my dudes. Out of four volumes of Jonah Hex they had at the shop, I of course grabbed the only one I already have. Fuck me.
There's a lot of stuff going up for pre-orders it seems. Even the Folio Society is having a Golden Age Marvel collection going to pre-order. I just wish I had more money so I could start pre-ordering.
Oliver Parker
IST? Mine got sent via FedEx even though I chose the cheapest option ($0), and it took 5 days total. Then again it was a 9lbs box...
Jeremiah Brown
Is that the one that decided to be "apolitical" after hiring the guy who wrote Maus to talk about fascism?
Yep, that's the one. Though the actual argument was about the "orange skull" line which does seem out of place for an introduction to a bunch of comics.
Tyler Morales
I did the same thing, and I guess it chooses UPS because they have a stronger presence here in Georgia or something. The actual shipping is always quick for me, it says Monday but I'm expecting it here on Friday or Saturday, I'm just surprised it took so long to send out.
Andrew Garcia
Should I buy Dragon Con tickets now or should I wait till it get's closer to the date next year?
Nicholas Powell
neat
James Davis
I like comics so much it makes me sick. Why do they have to cost so much
Eli Harris
Dunno about tickets, maybe /cgl/ will be able to tell you if the price rises over the year, but you might call a few hotels in the area and see how far out you can book a room.
Levi Davis
I live near the area
Kevin Collins
Pick ups from August. I got the X-men book for a dollar, I never read X-men before but it looks fun.
