Crumb may be a deprived pervert, but lots of geniuses in history have been deprived perverts. Not saying all perverts are geniuses, but there seems to be a correlation between creativity and kinkiness. I'd go as far to say anybody who draws cartoons has at least once drawn something that turned them on, if not filled pages worth of smut that they only know about. I believe there's a handful of cartoonists who are genuinely pure and never do any kind of erotic material, but... c'mon. Cartoonists inevitably get horny like any human being and attempt to bring their fantasies to life through drawings. Just because Crumb is extremely open about it doesn't make him any less of a human being. In fact, his fearlessness in owning his sexuality should be inspiring to anybody, because trying to cover up feelings and feeling guilty for them will only hurt you more than if you were just to accept and live with them. I just find it weird how most of the stuff he did back then is the same shit we embrace nowadays. Yet were getting all getting all pissy at him.

Except he has made more of that green shit, harpooned more poon and made a bigger name of himself than anyone ITT ever will.

People are denouncing him for being sort of an asshole as well as derogatory towards women in that way a lot of men who grew up in the 50's are. Kominski has been pretty forthcoming about the troubles in their relationship.
Some people also think his comics are held up as the best of the underground comix era at the expense of a lot of men but more particularly women whose shoulders he stood on.
There's also simply a large contingent of people who don't find his comics very good, usually saying they're just rambling ill thought out rants about random things with art that's more style over substance or composition.

Basically most critics say that he's simply not all that good enough to be held up on such a high pedestal, and that him being such an abrasive asshole while also being essentially the face of indie comics as an art form is a detriment to the medium.

Admittedly, many of the people who don't "get" his work are women, and I don't think it's hard to see why women don't really relate to his comics in the same way they do other underground comix that are much more based in emotion and politics.
