Is this Producing Parker?

You pinpoint the exact moment this comic loses its soul.

The whole storyboarded scene for Producing Parker was so much fucking better. Wasn't that Brokenlynx too?

Attached: why tom preston why.jpg (1000x987, 974K)

the storyboard off model

Someone should make a cartoon made up of storyboards

why the absolute fuck would you draw the same comic 6 times

Literally every single on-model storyboard I’ve ever seen looks better than the finished product. That includes animation.

I don’t know why- that’s just how it is.

So what are you trying to tell us OP?
People aren’t animating like old school Disney anymore? Is that it?

As much as I hate Dobson, he isn't?

The first looks like it's just laying out the basics, the following two is probably getting different feels for scenes since its traditional and the bottom row is just steps on computer showing inking, flat colors, and the shading.

That said it's still more work than necessary to preparing a page, and probably should have stuck to simple "thumb nailing" until finding the proper panel scene he had in mind or just go with the first detailed version as it still tells the same scene.

The point of the storyboard is not to look good. It's to clearly describe what's happening in the scene. In that particular picture, the storyboarder exagerrates the character expressions so that it's clear how the character reacts, but animating such expressions in Flash would be quite difficult, and might also clash with the general aesthetic of the show (which seems more realistic than cartoony). The end product doesn't have to look like the storyboards at all, it's only CalArts trash cartoons like Steven Universe where they literally have Korean children trace storyboards so you can even guess the storyboarder from the final animation.

Are you literally defending the drawings on the bottom to make some kind of retarded stance. Your brain must be a stew of garbage lol

Not that guy, but no, you tard, that's literally how storyboarding works. They're just basic drawings that are supposed to provide a layout of the scene, they don't represent the final product. And with a flash animated show it will lean more towards staying on model.

i was including his nonsense about Steven Universe. i just didn't mention it because i don't want to act like his comment suggests something rational.

the drafting process isn't always finished on your first sketch

Would you watch TTGO if it looked like the storyboards?

Attached: ttgo.png (881x433, 484K)

People rarely call the art the deal breaker with TTGo

Because that's how final products start out

Sure seems that way. With Producing Parker in particular, they had some really talented Canadian board artists putting out well-drawn, emotive character expressions. Unfortunately the animation was farmed out to the Philippines and all the characters immediately took on some awkward Pinoy design aesthetics and that ruined the expressiveness of the initial boards... it might have completely compromised the show itself, since PP never found an audience and entered obscurity after its initial airing

>We'll never get the storyboards for "The Skinny on Parker" episode

Context if you don't know: Death Trap Dungeon is a popular choose your own adventure book w/ serious and gruesome illustrations. When it was localized in Japan the art was all replace by anime girls. The best part is it was all done without the author's approval or knowledge

Are you sure this isn't flipped?
Looks pretty bad either way

Wow I didn't know Morbius had his own cartoon. Thanks for sharing OP.

What is this?

Producing Parker. A Canadian animated sitcom

Yeah, they are flipped.

Recolor should be on the right with the original on the left.

flipped opposite sides

The recolor is more soulful, by at least being appropriate for the lines, which are pretty divisive on their own

You can tell the top was drawn by hand, the bottom looks like rigged tween shit where the eye expression and nose-mouth distance doesn't shift.

Soul

>animating such expressions in Flash would be quite difficult
Flash really did ruin cartoons.

You could say the same about the killing joke recolor, but most people still prefer the original

I do like the art style of the backgrounds.

Attached: The_Batcave.png (1280x720, 1.15M)

>tfw if dobson wasn't a terrible person we might actually like his comics

But the original Killing Joke colors are appropriate for the lines the same way the recolor is appropriate here, they're almost the same artstyle as well. The ugly airbrushed realistic colors only downplay the art instead of enhancing it.

Not sure what you're getting at, but the "Original" airbrushed look is how the comic actually looks, and the "Recolor" was done by some guy claiming the art would look better with a flat stylized retro look.

>the "Original" airbrushed look is how the comic actually looks
then why is the Black Canary pic redrawn by someone else?

Not sure myself, the guy who did the recolors didn't upload any "before" pages for comparison so I had to hunt them down. Maybe he used a different edition of the book than I found, or took it upon himself to "improve" it.

strange

Never fails to make one shrivel up a little.

I like the recolor a lot better in this case. The original colors are muddy and unbalanced, and a lot of the talking heads just look weird in the original, the better colors and grain effects in the recolor make it a lot easier on the eyes.

Is that michael jackson?

Hell Yeah! Jeez the animatics are actually really entertaining visually.

vimeo.com/109845748

Man, why can't they just color the animatics instead of redoing everything with flash puppets,

Attached: bb2.png (690x445, 228K)

yes

Like, just drop in the paint bucket tool and add some iip sync and it's 100% more charming than the final product.

Attached: bb.png (741x458, 90K)

Looks like his linework.

I'm sorry but this the line between stylization and a lack of artistic talent has been crossed in these images.

The original had really bad early digital coloring. The recolor is trying as hard as it possibly can to look like the original Dark Knight Returns.

This feels less like line-art and coloring getting in the way, and more that he just chose the wrong draft to go with.

He should've went with the second draft in the middle. It tells the story a lot better and has more interesting composition. The sound effect for the tree falling also wasn't necessary. And while I get he may have wanted to make it clear that he was tossing the wooden man into the fire, the panel he went with was just really boring compare to the other one.

>My Dungeon can't be this Trapped with Death

In the last Dobson thread I was in, people were posting some of his earlier comics and while the writing and humor was meh at best, the cartoony style was actually pretty appealing to me. I think when he started making uglier faces like in and going for a more “realistic” style is when his stuff lost any appeal it had to me.

Because the result is an even cheaper looking powerpoint presentation for 11 minutes?

holy shit.

this is kinda sad at the same time

You make not like the things you have to do to animation to get 22 minutes of it done on a TV budget, but those are the breaks

Attached: 1687564316846 (1).png (640x480, 241K)

i think it fits the tone better, but for television sake, what we have is fine

bullshit. With digital tools it's easier than ever to do animation. All the things that held studios back are gone. It's more to do with a growingly obsolete business model, and the youngest generation being the first to stop watching TV.

I'd watch an entire show made of storyboards.

Those look like dogshit regardless, except for the sixth panel. The original looks pretty good.

>the youngest generation being the first to stop watching TV

I haven't watched television in over four years.

Attached: Supersmug.jpg (480x552, 307K)

me neither. I cut the chord and I either stream or pirate w/e I want. Frankly I find most new TV shows to be not worth watching either way.

Was this joke cut? I don't remember it in the original.

Yeah, the middle page in the top row isn't all that bad. The axe doesn't look as ridiculous as in the later pages, and some of the panel composition looks better (like the second-last panel's angle). That's what you get for over-thinking things.

yeah. almost the entire 2nd half of the episode was redid too

Nnnnnnope, a low budget is a low budget. Software only helps so much. There is no 'make this look better for free' animation tool

This. Always frustrating when people who dont understand that 'animation is hard' complain that low budget cartoons dont look as good as their storyboards. Yeah modern software has raised the bar of what kinds of animation you can do on a low budget; compare an episode of The Flintstones to an episode of Ruby Gloom if you dont believe that. But Software only goes so far. No, the 'partially hand drawn, mostly computer assisted and assembled from previously drawn components' final product will never look as good as the entirely hand drawn original. Thats tv, get over it.

I've thought the same thing but I'd just worry about the precedent it would set and it would lead to Clutch Cargo.

>won't throw the far less amount of bux needed to produce a hand drawn masterpiece
American shows are trash and their fascination with trying to reproduce reality are fucking disgusting.

Even the ass looks worse.

Animation requires more time than it does money, which is unattractive to investors. You can throw as much money at it as you want but if it has to be finished in only a few months, there's not enough talent in the world that can polish a rushed turd.

This is why I can't respect nips. Haven't been so pissed in a while.

No, TTG isnt bad because of the visuals, its bad because its horribly, cringingly unfunny

Did frank miller’s art get worse over time, or was he always bad?

Im not sure what youre referring to, american tv animation has never tried to look realistic, and theatrical animation hasnt tried that since Beowulf and those other repulsive robert zemekis films that bankrupted a company.

Attached: 1566384676495.jpg (540x404, 26K)

I always did really like dobson's art style (he still needs to tone down the fucking eyebrows though).
I really wish he wasn't such a jackass so I wouldn't be so hesitant to admit that.

I feel like this really shows you how the limits of what you could make really actually helped people develop a good sense of style.

The colors for most of whats on the left look really good and compliment each other and the composition but on the right they just go apeshit and dont care about what colors look good or how they look next to each other or on the page.

this has soul though

Imagine

>Whatever happened to that yellow submarine remake
>I guess it went *puts on sunglasses* Nowhere Man

No, that's the correct order. Stopped reading after the first issue because I couldn't ignore the shitty Macintosh gradients. Felt bad because I knew Lynn Varley was better than that.

He only redrew like 2 times

>Second sketch laying out the persective
>Third sketch fixing some panel
>Fourth ink in
>Fifth color in
>Sixth add in effects

Parker a cute. For what it was worth, the show had some pretty nice ENF scenes.

all this talk about Producing Parker and one user mentioning Ruby Gloom reminded me how glad I am that Mercury Filmworks has come so far and now does the Tangled cartoon

>it’s a hydro carbon made up word and aipcien e jargon you can’t pronounce tube!
It’s even funnier because in the actual episode that’s exactly what it is

Digital coloring and inking is just not compatible with some older artists. Miller and Adams' art seem particularly... off when done digitally.

6 years old is Yea Forums age.

Damn, that style is cute af

>even cheaper
Don't give studios any ideas.

ha, the japanese are subhuman

Based

The bottom is still not THAT bad, relative to the PP stuff.

>No, the 'partially hand drawn, mostly computer assisted and assembled from previously drawn components' final product will never look as good as the entirely hand drawn original
Okay, even though I’m disappointed by the heavy amounts of cgi projects in comparison to hand-drawn projects. I have to call total bullshit on that field. Sure it doesn’t have the bullshit ‘soul’ of hand drawing but they really are making stuff that we haven’t been capable before. ‘Into the spiderverse’ unarguably brings out a lot of style and energy that many hand-drawn movies can’t fucking do. The ‘TMNT (2012)’ show utilizes cgi to create a lot of great cinematography and camera angles that’ll be hard as fuck to achieve in a fully hand drawn production, and none of it feels cheap or inferior to a fully hand drawn project.

I don't like it but if it sucks so bad why do people keep paying money for this garbage?

The majority of the populous of the United States and China are actually very low IQ.

>>show is written for a younger audience
>>adult watching said show finds the writing cringe worthy

no shit sherlock, because its not written for your overgrown dumbass

It's not like normal people care about what gets put in theaters.

Also the church my parents go to had a charity event where they sold tickets for the lion king to help a baby girl get better. So they helped make its money even though otherwise my parents wouldn't go see it.

the top middle actually looks good.

>The original had really bad early digital coloring.
>early
Actual early digital coloring: Katsuhiro Otomo's AKIRA, 1988 Epic Comics release with colors by Steve Oliff. Much more subtle and pleasant.

Although... I've seen people justifying the gaudy colors of DK2 as intentionally reflecting the early 2000s internet or television. That makes some sense. Still looks like shit, but makes sense.

>Did frank miller’s art get worse over time, or was he always bad?
He got worse, definitely much worse. His style was always a bit rough and stylized, but now rough and stylized is ALL he has.

So which one is the titular trap?

Nobody is saying that computers make animation WORSE, but when an animation studio is trying to save money on animation by using software to 'fill in the gaps', its not going to look as good as the storyboards, because the storyboards were entirely hand drawn and had no gaps to fill.

What were they thinking

Attached: file.png (480x360, 132K)

Every time I listen to that biggering song I swear I die a little more inside. I love this fuckin song, the absolute power it has as a rock opera song is cool as FUCK in my opinion. I would've absolutely loved it in the movie, even the fact that it exists is thanks to the movie, so I at least have the movie to thank for that.

Attached: 1417314998528.gif (500x375, 1.09M)

Not that this helps much, but isn't that storyboard a thing some fan made based on the deleted song and not official?

So like even if that song was included, it likely would've looked completely different from that anyway.

It was just a fan storyboard, but it's the first thing that shows up when you look up the song, it's still way better than anything in the actual film.

I like the song itself, I know the storyboard is fan-made, it's just kind of a nice bonus for a badass as fuck song.

I wonder if they only budgeted for one mouth to be drawn and just flipped it upside down or right side up for every expression.

You mean the song they didn't use because it would make the oncler actually look evil even though the lyrics evoke the EXACT themes of uncontrolled growth that original story was about?

God damn I hate illumination

But that anime Tyrion is legit more accurate to the book description than the show’s version. More accurate than a lot of fan art even.

I think it's moreso they wanted a sillier song, they still use some of the same themes, even the final song has the same lyrics towards the end. I think it has less to do with them being afraid to portray the Onceler as evil, and more to do with Illumination being afraid to have one second of seriousness in their movies. Which fucking sucks because I love the Biggering song

Oh look, its the 'its ok thats its shit, its for kids' argument, not a response to criticism so much as it is a deflection of criticism, indirectly admitting that its garbage but thats acceptable so long as the audience is babies. An argument so flaccid and juvenile that theres a whole episode of TTG revolving around it.

The Muppet Show is 'for kids', Sesame Street is 'for kids', and those shows are fucking hilarious. Because theyre not written 'for kids', theyre written for everyone. Quality knows no demographic. Even lower end childrens shows like Dora the Explorer or Bubble Guppies are, at worst, boring for adults, and not completely insulting.

The notion that its ok for childrens entertainment to be shitty is stupid. Kids need quality entertainment MORE than adults, if anything. Because we dont want them to turn into shitheads when they grow up.
