Best versions always have Joe Chill just be desperate and jumpy, not even realizing he killed the Waynes until later on.

I think one retcon of the late 50s/early 60s was that it was some mafia boss who hired him to off old Wayne and Bruce was spared explicitly so that there would be a witness to it being just a robbery.
