Yep. He only wanted best for his people and was devastated over his mate's death. He was there a clear example of the Republic's wrong decisions and reactions. What later happened to him simply made me feel sympathetic to him even if he didn't know everything was made up and manipulated and didn't even remember why he renamed himself Grievous in the first place.

Then The Clone Wars CGI cartoon came and RoTS and shat on him. My headcanon is that the Grievouses we saw in the latter two were clones that were created via stolen Kaminoan tech that was handled poorly, while the original Grievous at some point regained his memories and was later frozen in carbonite (or whatever other way that put him in stasis) because he was too good to kill off...only to be left forgotten. And he's out there somewhere only to be found by someone.
