I wanna get into this where do I start
I wanna get into this where do I start
Read all the comics and the books in order
Start anywhere you want because the bionicle story is a clusterfuck that sucked out all the mystique of the early years with bullshit sci fi explanations.
Yes I’m bitter
You are the first person I’ve ever seen who actually dislikes the bionicle lore
This. Though the books by Cathy Hapka can arguably be skipped. I'd also recommend watching the flash animations from the Mata Nui Online Game, but unfortunately they don't play like they should in modern flash.
Depends what you want. If you want weird mystical indigenous robots on an otherwise organic tropical island, battling Satan, read the comics up to 2003, and also watch the excellent cgi commercials, and play the Mata Nui Online game.
If you want to go one layer deeper into the lore, and see the origins of some of the minor characters from the first three years, follow the next 2 years, Metru Nui and the Visorak arcs. Stop here if fantasy is your thing, and the word Piraka terrifies you
If you want everything explained, and elaborated upon, and want to delve into the soft sci fi underbelly of the setting, and see the big payoff for 8 years of buildup, keep reading after that. It's not all bad, but it does end on a weaker note. It ends ok, but it is not the peak of Bionicle, which was probably the Bohrok wars.
Buy a bunch of toys on bricklink
Buy all the toys secondhand, and THEN read all the comics and books in order, and assemble and play with them as they appear in the stories.
Inika best Toa team.
Buy one of the original 6 toa off eBay, and devote yourself to that character, element, Koro, Metru, Matoran, and general way of life.
If you don't pick Lewa I will slice you with an axe
>not being a Kopaka chad
L O L
Ok Yea Forums, we don't get new people into Bionicle very often. Keep the big reveal in spoilers
Fuck off with that Treespeak nonsense. Po-koro or bust
Dress up as a robot, and gather a group of five other friends to dress up as robots. Climb into massive pill shaped capsules, set adrift into the ocean, and collectively wash up on a tropical island. Let the abos that greet you and worship you as heroes of legends guide you to their ancient tribal masks of power, and the descend into their network of caves to fight the Lord of darkness that has been sending cursed beasts to terrorize the island. You'll pick up the rest as you go along
Matoro is best Toa Inika
Is best Toa, in general
>not based Onua
Go find a Gukko and get off my island.
Y'all had four chances to get it right, and you failed. Tahu is the main character we all deserve
Is there a Yea Forums villain half as based as this guy?
This guy was probably at least half as based
Brutaka, Pridak, and Mantax too. And among the Brotherhood there was Antroz, Krika and Mutran.
I don't know about Mutran, but the others didn't seem like they had quite the long-con that Zaktan was working. He played the Shadowed one and the brotherhood for chumps.
Mata Nui Online Game is the best intro to the world, the atmosphere, early lore and side characters (much of which sadly gets eroded as the series progresses). The first few books and comics are very bare bones, incomplete and contradictory and none give you a full account of the story. Although the comics have bonus pages for character bios and story overviews if you get the full pdf files, those give you some insight on things the actual comic pages gloss over or ignore.
Bionicle can be a rough brand to get into for newcomers, since early media was messy and no one really knew what to do with the franchise until its second year.
Zaktan is the perfect balance of BASED and JUST
Vezon too
If someone makes a new move about the Inika story line, should it have mood music, symphonic, or angsty punk?
youtube.com
why not all 3
because mood music is stupid
Did I miss something? Wasn't he just the Piraka leader and then got mutated into a literal snake? What else did he do?
Bionicle is a story of how a bunch of star lacrosse players save the world.
>Nuparu
>Matoran. Inika. Mahri
And my classmates in middle school laughed at me for learning the Matoran alphabet
He spent 100,000 years doing sneaky Zaktan stuff, and he almost won too when he found the Ignika.
Alright. Greenpill me on Zaktan, sound snakey
Play the MNOLG
Read the comics leading up to the first movie
Watch the first movie
Kane, but i'm 90% sure he's not Yea Forums
Which Makita do you prefer:
>I am the inevitable destruction to Mata Nui's creation, as all Lego must inevitably be broken down into pieces
>I am Mata Nui's brother, and every moment he is awake, he suffers. This is Mercy
>I am the God the Matoran should worship, not their silent uncaring deity.
>I am the puppet master, and everything has happened according to the Great Plan
>I am getting a moon crushed through my skull
>I am the most cunning and treacherous of my species of rogue sentient rahi makers
>I am going to challenge Takanuva to a Kolhii match (????)
Which was better the Mata Nui great spirit robot reveal or that Makuta was in control
Both are equally good.
>I am the puppet master, and everything has happened according to the Great Plan
>I am the puppet master, and everything has happened according to the Great Plan
>I am the most cunning and treacherous of my species of rogue sentient rahi makers
These were always the best versions of Teridax, especially with the dry, condescending since of humour Greg gave him
>I am the inevitable destruction to Mata Nui's creation, as all Lego must inevitably be broken down into pieces
>I am Mata Nui's brother, and every moment he is awake, he suffers. This is Mercy
>I am the God the Matoran should worship, not their silent uncaring deity.
These are also good, but taking into account later reveals, would of been better attributed to different characters. The first one especially I could see being the MO of a Great Being.
So, it seems he was a slave in a protodermis mine before the Shadowed one pulled him out to be a dark hunter. The other piraka were likewise forced into that group. Zaktan got all six of them to work together to build trust to eventually double cross the dark hunters. They went along doing missions, until Vakama crafted the mask of time. That news set something off between the dark hunters and Makuta's forces. In that conflict, Zaktan secretly fed info to Roodaka (and set her up with Sidorak), so she could take over Metru Nui using the visorak horde. That mess allowed the six piraka to escape. After the toa Mata killed Makuta, the piraka looted his lair. Then they traveled in toa canisters to Voya Nui, where they posed as toa to the local matoran. That way Zaktan could find the mask of life without drawing attention. It worked so well that when the toa Mata showed up, the piraka took them completely off-guard and incapacitated them. The toa Inika came looking for the toa Mata when they came home. Vezon got the mask of life instead of Zaktan though.
All of them are better than the "I will talk very slowly about destroying stuff, sometimes to myself, oh no fuck why can't I stop flattening myself with this giant rock" version from movie #2. By that point, Greg's reboot of the character was an absolute must.
Still, I have a soft spot for the classy, no nonsense, menacing one from the original story plans and MNOG. Some dry wit was good, it gave him character, but I sometimes feel Greg overdid it, to the point that it became almost comical near the end. Of course by that point just about everyone was a sarcastic jerkass, which was annoying in itself.
A combination of different music styles always suited Bionicle, but what I really want to hear is a dark, slow, serious, symphonic instrumental reprise of the Piraka Rap's tune composed by Nathan Furst, with optional ominous choir chanting at key moments.
OP here, what do you mean?
If that’s true where should I stop
I love the concept of bionicle but its execution was a mess. Everybody says they liked it for the lore, but they didn’t. What they really liked was the atmosphere; the tribal aesthetic, and the mysterious and very reverent way everything was presented.
The mystery and relative simplicity of the concept was a big part of what hooked kids in. There’s a reason normie interest dropped after Mask of Light, and it’s because everything got way too convoluted.
The tone and aesthetic just changed too much as the series went on, and Greg F got way too much creative control.
>GEEWUN
Early Bionicle (2001-03) was mostly fantasy with mystical tribal elements. Legends, myths, magical explanations. But the real-life Maori people wanted to sue Lego for misusing certain words and traditions taken from their culture, so Lego dropped most of the tribal aspect.
Later it became more science-fantasy and lost its mystique. This was actually planned from the start, but the later years lost almost all of that nice fantasy atmosphere of the earlier years. 2005 is when the biggest shift happened, that's when the original main writer (Bob Thompson) left Lego and the story began losing focus. The following saga from 2006 to 08 was pretty great despite the change in tone and contained many highlights, including the payoff to mysteries built up since the beginning.
But the side stories from the web serials were a complete mess with no sense of direction because the writer (Greg Farshtey) hated planning ahead. He made up things on the go, copied things from whichever comic, TV show, book or game he happened to like at the moment, and made a ton of dumb plot twists that ruined entire characters and plots. Just avoid these and stick to the main story told in the books and comics.
OP here, which toys are the best?
Wrong question, more like what should you avoid?
The answer is any of the playsets unless you're dying for those minifigs, and most of the cookie cutter enemies after the Bohrok, unless you really fucking dig their colors and combined form.
>Not liking the Vahki, Rahkshi and the 06-08 enemy sets
Shit taste there, lad.
The Visorak did suck though.
OK anons before I decide to finally take the plunge I need to know
Overall how is this storyline/lore?
DEEPEST
Leave before you're spoiled.
Start with one of the 6 Toa Mata (your OP pic), then grab a Bohrok and a Rahkshi. From there, you can see what you like, and grab more toa, canister sets, or move onto larger Titans.
Brutaka, Maxilos, Tarakava, The Karda Nui jets, and Axxon are some of the best big sets they've ever put out, so that's not bad either. The Rahi are definitely heavily technic, and way less action figury, but they're really neat.
Really, get whatever you think looks cool. Most of the time, our favorite characters are the things we grabbed as kids that looked awesome, and then we followed those characters in the lore. The great thing about Bionicle lore is that even the smaller obscure characters have long side story arcs and serials that go on for years
The 06-08 stuff was different enough from each other, but the Vahki, Rahkshi and Visorak are just identical other than color and their weapon.
With the Piraka and Barraki, they were individual enough to seem like proper Anti-Toa sets.
Ok, you’re right
I’ll go on bionicle media project and read the first comic arc, then I could make a new thread and tell you all what I think cause I doubt it’ll still be up afterwards
you all seem to have such passion for the series so I hope it’ll be worth it
Goodbye anons
>I could make a new thread and tell you all what I think
I know you’ll do it anyways for attention, but please don’t. We don’t need to read your play-by-play blogposts about what you thought of a children’s toy media franchise.
You know what you’re right that was retarded, sorry.
Just remember that Kopaka is and always will be best boy.
play the flash game
Come back and make a thread when you’ve read it all, or if you give up. Just saying that it’s kinda attention-whorey to tell us your thoughts and feels about a giant story as you read it
Is there anything more rabidly autistic than reading bionicle comics? Like I don't have any issue with people reading bionicle comics and enjoying the lore, etc, but it just seems like it's really autistic on the same level as stamp collecting or enjoying model trains.
I'm not hating on you lads, I'm just legitimately wondering if it's really autistic as I think it is.
Right fucking here

>This is Biological Chronicle: the Complete Bionicle Collection. I've made PDFs containing practically every text- and audio-based piece of canon Bionicle fiction, plus any comics with story material not included elsewhere, in an ideal reading order. Everything is here, from the MNOG walkthrough to the Young Reader books, as well as QR codes (that are also clickable links!) which take you to video-only content. I re-did the existing podcast transcriptions, refined the existing translation of The Crossing, got the best comic scans I could, and just generally tried to make sure that everything is as high-quality as possible. This compilation is divided into 10 "Books," or volumes, each containing roughly one year's story.
unfortunately, BZpower is down at the moment, so i cannot subject you to maximum levels of bionicle autism outside of pony-takua
It's actually more akin to the early He-Man comics and the cartoon. Somewhat serious character focused stories with great designs and quality art.
>BZPower is down
Some things never change, huh? Also didn't the site lose all of its shit from prior to a certain date?
BIONICLE is arguably a western example of chuunishit, so I can see why you'd think that. I'd say it's on the same level of reading the lore of Transformers and Warhammer 40k, which are also very chuuni.
Does somebody have that awesome panel from the final with the good quote? I don't wanna say any spoilers, but if somebody has it plz post (spoilered of course)
Does anyone have the screencap of the lore told in ALLCAPS?
