It was good because of the unanticipated tonal shift.
Sure, there were a few mentions of Mao’s family beforehand but no evidence of how deeply rooted his psychological desire for affection had been.
And since the show had relied so heavily on well known lessons for kids in previous episodes, the change from “don’t trust strangers” to intentionally traumatizing someone with a hollow facsimile corpse of their best friend was unanticipated.
I do hope they keep it up, it nicely mirrors the show’s concept as a whole- of a sweet town full of love guarded by a dark edgy action hero

You get to explore Mao Mao's character in an interesting way (his childhood, his relationship with his father and him wanting to be loved). It gets you excited for whenever he does encounter his father again. The way his obsessive need to impress Blue and everybody else around him turns into him having a mental breakdown is played for comedy but is also tragic and was very well done. I also liked that in the end he solved his problem by going to therapy and getting help.
I don't know how the show turned itself around so fast but I'm glad it did.

Episode 1: Badgerclops spends the episode telling Mao Mao to run away and not to leave Puer Heart Valley.
Episode 2: Literally tells Mao Mao to retire, then spends the whole episode complaning about how he doesn't want to protect the town.
Episode 3: Provides Adorabat with dangerous weapons above her skill level. Only ever helps because his food gets destroyed.
Episode 4: Badgerclops decides to destroy the whole town over having beef with his friends.
Episode 5: Is a very very minor character. Tries to protect Mao Mao from his own hubris.
Episode 6: "lol, I only tag along because you're pathetic, fuck you for thinking anything else!"
Episode 7: Again tries to protect Mao Mao from his own hubris. Doesn't actually do anything to help, tho.
Episode 8: Destroys the city again, just because he's infatuated with a dangerous monster.
Episode 9: Helps Mao Mao with his plan, but doesn't really do anything.
Episode 10: Complete negative nancy wants to leave pure heart valley to be destroyed by the monster in the warning.
Basically, Badgerclops actively opposes any heroic undertaking and in many cases, is the cause of the problem. He's not a hero, he's not even the hero's sidekick. He's a foil during the best days and flat out an antagonist during his worse days. He's borderline evil.

The problem in ultraclops is Mao Mao thought BC was joking. He didn’t think he REALLY cared about being on the bottom bunk, he’s just a comic relief character after all! Which is why when things started getting out of hand, Mao was still clinging to “that’s... funny Badgerclops” and trying to push him to blow up. It was really only when BC said he was going to walk home that Mao realized he was being serious the whole time.
If Mao hadn’t learned that lesson he might have reacted in bobochan by saying “such a kidder Badgerclops! Now hand the monster over for Adorabat to use as target practice” instead of acknowledging that BC is an adult who can learn from his own mistakes.
