What's the deal with the italian Disney comics?

Hey Fredo, just a reminder that Euro Disneyland is in France, a country that hates Disney and has no interest in it, instead of in Italy, a country where Disney is still very popular, because Michael Eisner thought your country was too much of a shithole for his park.

IDW translate like 5 issues of PKNAbut canned it since nobody was buying it.

The original Ducktales comics are a tame adventure leaning more on a combo of slice of life and adventures making it kinda generic.
The Scrooge comics are far more dialogue heavy but carry the same SoL+adventure format.
The Duck Avenger comics feels exactly like Darkwing Duck in terms of quirkiness, except the comics have more dialogue.

How do the Italian comics compare? more like a darker action show with suaveness instead of quirkiness? more like Batman/Superman?

X-Mickey was pretty big in France, where it was called Dimension M. It ran in Mickey Parade Géant iirc and was enough of a big deal to regularly get on the cover back in the early-mid 00's. Same with PK, but this one ran in Super Picsou Géant (Picsou is the French name for Scrooge).
The Italian comics were way darker than your regular duck comics, well, as far as PKNA is concerned. For example, in one issue, PK is sent to investigate an abandonned spaceship, and discovers some huge-ass soldiers armed to the teeth who instantly bow down to him and wait for his orders. We then learn the council or whatever Uno (the galactic IA supporting PK) was a part of created the soldiers to fight against the Evronians (PK's bad guys, some garden standard variety of militaristic galactic empire), which explains why they obey PK. However, they were too good at their job and understood "fighting against the Evronians" as "genociding the fuck out of them". Cue flashbacks of them carrying out mass extermination operations and burning millions of Evronian spores (effectively unborn Evronian babies).

There's a ton of stuff published in Italy
The tone ranges from the quirky SoL you were talking about to Donald Duck as sci-fi Batman fighting space aliens

They fly under the rader of the yankee corporate overlords, and because of that, they're allowed to be a bit more experimental or try edgier shit.

Maybe it's because they were better at pushing the edge at the maximal point acceptable and then sneaking it under the censors' noses or making it more palatable to the 6-12 year old audience they were aiming for. For the experimental side, it seems as if it was a country-by-country kinda deal. For exemple, in Mickey Parade Géant, there's been a decade-long running supplement called Couac satirizing the magazine's staff and whatever else they felt making fun off. Fethry Duck was the main character of that stuff. It was really ten-or-so pages in the middle so the staff could go bonkers and have fun. There was a weirder equivalent in Picsou Magazine (Scrooge McDuck magazine), were they had another supplement called Coin-coin, focusing on absurdist and experimental humor with French indie comic authors. It lasted for a year. Also for some reason during that time the Bionicle comic was running in the magazine. Strange times.

I thought it was because Eisner wanted to have a business-related resort he could stay in that was close to Paris because his family liked shopping there, hence why the Euro Disneyland Resort was built in Paris despite massive French protests against it.

Honestly I can't remember the issue number, However they crash on an asteroid, Zondag appears and it ends with a desperate battle against the Evronians where the super soldiers sacrifice themselves to buy some time for Powerduck to escape. I might be remembering some stuff wrong, it's been more than a decade since I read that one.

That actually happened in the AMERICAN Disney duck comics, in the Darkwing Duck comic that was probably the last good American Disney comic (but I'm sure Italians hate it).

That's probably happened. Also, in one of the (regular-ish) Donald stories, he gets some kind of mouth-spray that helps him singing beautifuly, then he's sent on a cruise to get on an island (for some kind of contest) with Scrooge, his nephews and the rest. Then he gets tricked by the villain into singing to wake up some kind of ancient Cthulhu-like monster-God. If he wakes up, he stops dreaming, which causes the world stops existing for some reason. In the end, his nephews give Donald some juice that makes his voice go back to normal, he sings horribly, the monster finds Donald's atrocious vocals soothing, and goes back to sleep.

You have to understand that the Disney Comics are HUGE in Italy
Everyone here as read at least one issue of "Topolino" and it's still coming out every week since the 30s

Weird, I remember Pikappa being full of weird shit, like that issue with and organism that feeds on power and assimilates whatever it can, starting with vacuum cleaner, then to some heavy dump truck, etc to end up as a big-ass abomination.
Donald beats him by pointing at the sun and telling him he'll find alll the energy he needs to eat there, and motherfucker actually flies off to go eat the sun.
There was also this weird-ass issue with Lyla having flashbacks to the 19th century where here android lover murders their creator, Lord Babbage, and sets fire to their manor. The issue ends on a swordfight between the ex-lover and Powerduck, where he gets his arm cut off before Lyla fries his ass, effectively killing him.

Shit I didn't know Monster Allergy and W.I.T.C.H were actually Disney licenses.
But yes, it's most flourishing in Italy, but other countries are doing pretty good as well.
For exemple, Donald and Scrooge stuff is a religion in Sweden and Scandinavia in general, and France has had 4 fucking Disney magazines running for more than 4 decades and selling extremely well, the yougest starting in 1977 and the oldest in 1934 (Journal de Mickey). Those consist mostly of Italian and Danish reprints with the odd American issue, an assortment of non-Disney French strips and some French-made Mickey/Donald/Scrooge/whatever comics. Journal de Mickey is still the most succesful kiddie publication here, with 150 000 copies still sold per week apparently.

Just get a French-Italian dictionary and you'll be fine.
...except for the references to local dialects. Which go over the head of most Italian readers because the author uses his own super-local dialect.

It's slowly turning around I think as new capeshit continues to eat itself from the inside out and people are looking into other genres/artists. I don't know if Disney will ever not be considered "kiddy stuff" that adults should be ashamed to enjoy.

New Era is not terrible but not as good as New Adventures. The pacing is all over the place too.

Imagine growing up with this stuff and then seeing American Mickey Mouse in comparison. What was it like, Euroanons?

I have no idea what American Mickey Mouse is supposed to be honestly. I remember some of the comics I read had reprints of very old Gottfredson Mickey Mouse stories, and I don't remember them being much different from the stories I read on Italian comics. I remember a story where the antagonist was a foreign spy that routinely strangled his minions and the whole plot was trying to steal an invention that allowed to survive an atomb bomb.

It was pretty fucking dope because you'd get a bit of everything in each magazine since 2 of the four publications were around 200-page long. In my country, that was mostly translated classic italian stories, with some American and Danish stuff thrown in, and a few series to follow like ANPE (Donald and Fethry working as alien hunters a top secret agency), X-Mickey which was a surnatural/light horror Mickey series, and of course Paperinik - Pikappa and sometimes reprints of The Life And Times Of Scrooge McDuck.

In Germany we got a few of them (namely the fantasy stuff, which was pretty cool) and then they made LTB Premium, which comes out every few years and is always a collection of a few stories of one specific "alternate universe" from italian writers. They're great

Still, as said you have to consider that Italian disney comics had a LOT of publications. We had a few like Topolino (Mickey Mouse) that came out weekly and had original stories, but the biggest were the monthly magazines that were full of reprints from every existing disney comic of the last sisty years, foreigns or not. Those were usually grouped by theme or a character, so you had Topomistery (Mistery Mickey) that featured Mickey and had stories about misteries, thriller, PaperFantasy (Duck Fantasy) about Donald in sci-fi or fantasy settings or you had those centered on a character like "Daisy", "Donald Duck" "Duck Avenger" etc etc., everyone coming out every month with 5-6 reprints and usually a single original story. Then you had the random paperbacks that had even more strict themes like stories about the egypt, stories about the space, historical tales, parodies etc.

The point is, I can't honestly draw a paragon between Italian, American, Sout American, or whatever the country or the time period a character was, because the sheer amount of publications and reprints meant that If you were a kid that liked them in a few year you'd have read stories from everywhere and everytime.

I'll also take the opportunity to ask this. In Italy we are big on reprints. Take for example Dylan dog. when I read it I remember being around 3-4 publications of it in the newstand. One was the regular series (for example around number 250), then you had the first reprint (number 150) and the second reprint (number 50). Which make sense because those numbers originally came out at 10-20 years of distance, so unless you were a very long time fan they basically gave you three new stories each month instead of one without having to actually write three different stories each month.

Now maybe I'm wrong but excluding TPB I never heard of cape comics doing that. There is a reason why? It seems a clever strategy to me.

It was translated, but the translation was based on the censored version and took some liberties (like, in the boxing match between Goofy and Pete Dopey is the announcer: in the original version is just a paradox gag, the mute character is suddenly speaking just to announce a boxing match, but in the English translation they made it so that there is another dwarf hidden under him and voicing him)
