It really is. Some episodes are hit and miss with the humor, which the creator has acknowledged isn't necessarily good just because it's meant to be 'random'. It mostly comes from Gir though, cus his entire character is that he's broken. If you're fine with the shock value shit in ep2 you'll sit through the rest no problem.

It's the exact opposite, Nick regretted cancelling the show so soon when they saw the merchandise sales for it some years later, they have convinced Jhonen to continue the show for years, but he didn't have the time for it until now.
This is also why Zim was featured in a ton of Nicktoons crossover games well after the show ended
It's pretty good, but definitely a product of its time. A lot of the jokes and characters are contextualized by the show's world, so even though the humor is kind of spastic, it's consistent.

Help me out fellow ZATR bros. I'm trying to write a fic where they fall in weird alien love/hate. I need scenarios to make this even remotely plausible.
So far I got:

She commandeers Zim's base after telling him the Empire's gone, which causes him to go into a depression. She can't bring herself to to kill Zim as he might be the only Irken left in the whole galaxy, and decides to train him and help bring him out of this slump. Just so he doesn't get discovered (giving humans access to space-faring tech and bringing unwanted attention to Earth) and have him be a competent soldier in case of future battles.
Was this a show that only girls liked? I could only remember those quiet or unusual chicks talk about it but never a boy, never seen much of it myself so can't say its bad or good or anything like that.

I like to think of it as the setup to Zim recruiting her an assistant by the end (because she endeared herself to him when she was the stupid one) and she only pretends to agree because she has nowhere else to go. i usually worked with a 3 arc pattern: setup, adventure-finale setup, finale. if you were to make , say, 3 chapters per arc, you'd have something like a third of the story to do this "rescued from stupidity" arc. probably using the chapters like: first one to get zim there, the second one to meet tak, set the arc trajectory (maybe have tak's cave have hand paintings of a crash site for another ship) and maybe start the journey, and the third one for the journey and the retrieval (you're probably better having zim's ship not losing much integrity, but busting an easily carriable mcguffin he could get in the crash site), ship repairs and the pak sustitution/auto-fix. if you don't want to stick to a strict 3 parts per arc, make sure to add adittional chapters to the last 2 parts, so, like i said, you don't make the part where tak isn't tak too long.

Well, time to finally dive down into my inner autism. Hope you guys like what I have to offer so far.
I know that feel bro. I'm in love with the aesthetics of the universe and character designs, but when it comes to fleshing it out in a story there are so many contradictions to normal drama. None of the characters have any capacity to like each other so you have to change who they are, all while sticking to continuity of what brought them together in the first place.
Doesn't help that Zim and Tak are by far the biggest stretch to getting to like each other. Curse my tastes.
Always thought the Tallest, or at least Red, didn't hate Zim as much as they thought they did. They did humor him enough during the Great Assigning instead of yelling at him and telling him to go back to Foodcourtia.

There you can have him meet tak as a prisoner, found after surviving her accident on the series, and help her escape or something. just try and have some development here and there or she's gonna murder him as soon as she's free

I probably spent about 3 or 4 days thinking of the story in my head. Once I had a good chunk of the story outlined in text, I started the prologue. Actually writing it took me maybe four or so hours, plus maybe an hour for proofreading. I imagine the other chapters will take longer, since I intend them to be generally longer than the prologue.

Very well written, especially if you're continuing down a dramatic sci-fi epic road. I think you had the dialogue of each character very well mapped, as in you could tell them apart just by the tone with which they spoke.
I really admire your desire to answer questions such as "Why didn't they kill Zim after Operation Impending Doom 1?" and "How would Zim react to figuring out he's defective?" I think you did a good job of addressing them here, but I always feel there's a cost of taking the lore too seriously. There's just no way to have everything from the show make logical sense, and the cost of having it make sense is changing the characters. For example, I felt you made Red a little too deferential and almost cautious around Zim in order to answer these questions, and that change brings up another question which is how could Zim be so stupid and weak yet have so much plot armor? The real answer to all these questions and more is poor writing on the show that was never meant to make sense, but that's besides the point.
I think the characters by necessity have to be OOC, but I think you're starting off the right foot in that regard. I mean hey, if you gotta change the characters might as well make it fit to your genre. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this sci fi Zim epic.

I don't necessarily intend to fully adhere to what the show has presented us in terms of lore, (in that everything that makes sense in the show would make sense in this story), but I can definitely agree that I probably went a little overboard with Red. I didn't really intend to make him seem cautious, just that he knows something about the situation that he's in.
And yeah, I feel with a story like this, it's almost impossible to write them 100% completely in character. That's honestly what I was most worried about, that I wouldn't be able to make their dialogue feel like Zim/Red/Purple/etc. I'm glad that I'm at least doing something right with the dialogue.
