As we all know, Polygamy (multiple wives) is illegal in 50 US states except for Utah. You might say, "well this infringes our religious freedom!" and you'd be right, because it does.
So why is it illegal? Well it all goes back to our founding, you see America was founded by Puritans, the kind of Puritans who thought the naked body was sinful and a bunch of other dumb shit.
So when they saw Mormonism on the rise in the mid 1800's they decided to eradicate it. So they attempted to pass multiple bills which failed, so the Republicans launched a massive smear campaign against it.
But it wasn't until Justin Morrill passed a Federal Bill which stated, that Polygamy and Bigamy was banned and penalties were 500 dollars or 5 years in jail.

Now, one of the top religious leaders at the time called bullshit on this, and Lincoln told him he was right. However, Lincoln had no federal funds to enforce any bullshit laws that were passed due to the civil war. So he told this religious leader that he'd ignore the law completely, if Mormons (whom at the time were growing rapidly in the north), didn't enter the civil war. Another fun fact is that the supreme court ruled that, "A religion can exist and be protected, but not what that religion practices". I.E you cant have a religious practice that's killing a government official every wednesday but you can have your religious beliefs

So, there you have it. That is the reason why Polygamy is federally illegal in the U.S. Even today, it's literally a law that exists but isn't enforced by anyone, but if someone catches you it can still be enforced. Polygamy is illegal in Utah, just like everywhere else (that is civil and common law marriages, you can enter into a religious union with whoever, as long as you don't try and get the government to recognize it, also just like everywhere else). In fact, they also banned multiple partner cohabitation, but that law was struck down. Utah cracked the fuck down on that shit as overcompensation for the large Mormon presence.

And frankly, our legal system is designed around 2 partner marriages. It'd require a bit of an overhaul of at the very least our government benefits and tax systems to design it to scale with multiple partners. That's not to say polygamy should be illegal, though. But I wouldn't expect it to be legalized anytime soon.

Also, polygamy is multiple partners, not multiple wives. That's polygyny (how's that for a scrabble word). And polyandry is multiple husbands.

The law banning cohabitation was struck down precisely because they were trying to enforce it. Fact is Utah's government hates polygamy. It's not well regarded there because they view it as harming the reputation of the state. They don't want you talking about polygamy or how the Mormon church used to be ultra turbo racist.

Well they have changed.
