Its treated as comedy at first, and for drama later. Klan isn't the first case of a Zentradi whose genetics didn't support micronizing/macronizing well. One of the characters from the first show comes back in a later series as a giant broccoli headed monstrosity and the explanation we get is "getting shrunk down to human was fine, but when I changed back I was THIS. We didn't dare risk it again, the next time could kill me".

For Klan the drama comes from the fact that she's in love with a human sized dude, and in her natural form he's toy sized to her and her miclone form has a busted endocrine system and will always seem pre-pubesecant. Said guy likes Klan as a person, and they are best friends, but he isn't a pedo so they are kind of in a no-win scenario.

Their relationship would have ended in tragedy anyway, because we STILL don't have any canon examples of a Zentradi ever dying of old age so Klan was always going to outlive him by a long time, but their relationship just never got off the ground even though they both clearly wanted it to.
