People complain about "trying too hard to be Avatar," but can we admit that She-Ra is better than the previous two attempts at trying to recapture Avatar's magic, Korra and Voltron?

Season 1 of She-Ra was half "The Great Divide" tier episodes and half decent episodes. I think season 2 and 3 definitely is where the show hits its stride.

Tbh I think Tangled does better on catching that sorta fantasy magic even if Season 2 does have not so good episodes.

I'd say The Dragon Prince is doing better in that regard. More world building than She-Ra, where the world just feels so empty.

I really can't say that because for all Korra's characters flaws, most of which are shared or even worse in She-Ra, there's not a single anything in the entire show that's as well animated or as tightly choreographed as a fight from the bad studio in season 2. Thing is, She-Ra even copies a lot of Korra's stuff for some reason, right down to making Hordak needing his familial figure's approval and when rejected goes off to create a giant war machine to prove they're worthy, you know, like Kuvira. They even gave him a love interest that used to be on the other side of the battle but joined up in a romantic relationship to help build the machines they use to try to take over the world. Mostly things involving magic energy and robots, you know how they do. She-Ra also still doesn't have an actually threatening villain, instead focusing on non-threatening and mostly ineffectual goons, when at least season 3's villain killed someone on screen. Just the idea they could actually seriously hurt someone puts that villain miles above anything She-Ra has. Korra's season 2 and 3 had really bad worldbuilding but it was a lot more detailed and intricate than She-Ra's.

So, worse villains, at best as bad characters, worse woldbuilding, and the animation isn't even a vague dream compared to it. Yeah, Korra sucks, but She-Ra still doesn't come close to it. I can't think of anything She-Ra does better than Korra.

Dragon Prince is a lot better in anything except animation. Not to say its not well shot or they don't use the movement well, its that however bad She-Ra is in animation, and it's absolutely bargain basement, even its janky movements and still images being dragged across the screen isn't as hard to watch as a CGI 10fps nightmare. Dragon Prince does better in the writing but holy shit is it hard to watch. I'd also argue seasons 1-3 of Voltron are better as well, its worldbuilding is massive in scale and there's a lot of history and lore to everything, the animation is fantastic in all the battles and Zarkon is a very effective villain, his one showing against the red lion is more intimidating and better at developing the nuance of his character than the entirety of Hordak's character for the whole show.

This kills me, because it's very similar to the 2002 He-Man reboot. Fleshing out characters, a few personality tweaks, mainly just taking the central concepts and looking at them through a modern lens.

They looked at the original She-Ra, which established right at the start that Adora had been raised by the Horde, and decided that the old show hadn't done as much with that idea as it could have. So a ton of the new show is Adora dealing with her powers (pretty much copied from the original), and coping with the fact that she suddenly switched sides in a war and the people she'd been with her whole life are now "the bad guys".

The original deserves its props, but (1) this is better, and (2) the idea that this ISN'T using the ideas of the original is nonsense.

Just for some examples of how they try to work with ambiguous ages is early on when they had a "princess prom". Not a grand gala, not a ball, but a "prom", specifically an event tied to being in high school age. Despite that, pretty much anyone and everyone seemed to be allowed to go as long as you had an invitation, so you can see them being teens or young adults.
And Bow saying he's in a university as a cover for his parents can also be between actual college age or highschoolers who just take college classes.

Character designer based her age around hers, which was 29 at the time of this post, and later went on saying that the crew put a lot of thought in making sure she was always planned to be an adult and not to mess up her character since she is also based on someone they knew who was autistic or some sort of "neurodivergence".
