Legit, I'm pretty sure he's somewhat autistic. He's not wholly devoid of natural talent, he was probably relatively advanced for his age and then he decided to stop improving. He makes all these profound sounding but largely incorrect or misinformed declarations about things because he can't step outside himself and imagine how someone without his exact experience and and worldview would perceive it, and more damningly, can't imagine he might be wrong about something. Does anyone have that image where he shows his process for making a comic strip, and his initial pencils are actually pretty good, and the thing gets homogenized down to garbage by the time he's finished inking and coloring it?

You need to get connections to get into the industry, schools help you do this by introducing you to people already in the industry so you can make a good impression and increase your chances of getting in.
Dobson however is a thoroughly unlikable person who likely never made any attempt at getting on the good side of anyone in the industry, or on the off chance he did couldn't control his 'tism and scared away any potential connections.

He is too lazy and too political to appeal to a wider audience. The laziness is the biggest issue.

Not Dobson, but I had this happen once when I sent an anonymous message to a tumblr whose art I liked. It was a straight up compliment and she responded calling me homophobic in a snarky as fuck way because I referred to her art of fictional lesbians as yuri. Immediately made me hate her, why are some artists like this?
