I don't think they're that bad.

The first movie is a little limited but it made sense for the context (not much heroing but worked well for building firm characterizations) and the sequel had all the trappings of a conventional superhero movie of today (even if the plot was a little too overstuffed; they undeniably misused Galactus, though).

Given that Kamala's comics already greatly downplay her powers, Disney will likely see that as an excuse to not shell out for extensive shapeshifting effects thinking that will keep the show accurate to the source material.

I think if you look to certain types of horror film you get an indication of how his powers could look terrifying or creepy. Unfortunately I think you may be right otherwise, in that creepy and goofy are the only options.

That's why The Maker works so well.

But Reed's powers are inherently corny. Not that they aren't effective but seeing someone extend their arm across a chalkboard is always going to look silly.

The trick is to steer into it with a proper motif, unlike what Fart4stic did.

Cast a new actor as an older Reed but bring back Miles Teller as the Maker. Stretchy powers only need to be sparsely used by good Reed since traditionally it is goofy, but Maker can be some light body horror which is a more visually interesting angle to go with.

That might be a good angle since it steers into The Maker's actual origins.

Also I wasn't saying dumb is a bad thing, it's just a reality. Where they fuck up is when they build the wrong sort of movie around it.
