Yes. I prefer looking at beautiful things over ugly things. If the weight sits poorly on the figure, I'll enjoy looking at the character less and therefore feel less desire to read or watch the media in question.
That's not to say fat can't be cute, but the more extreme the weight in either direction, the more likely the character will come across as having an undesirable appearance.
