Zim was starting to overstay its welcome even before it got cancelled. I don't know where FOP went sour for sure, but it was definitely past its prime in season 6 after it was uncancelled the first time.

Reading Jhonen's blog and following his social media, I always got the sense he held a massive inferiority complex toward Butch and FOP itself for eclipsing Zim. Of course on his old blog especially, JV was mostly satire and its hard to get his meaning even when reading between the lines, but there certainly seems to be a sort of one sided anonmosity there.
