Is it just me, or have webcomics been dying in general? They seemed super fucking big like, a decade ago.

A Lesson Is Learned (but the damage is irreversible)

Because nobody supports them and a lot of creators can't just make a living off of them so they have to do something else.

not sure, i still see a lot of webcomics both big and small going on, but in any case the only one i consistently gave a damn about was dr mcninja, damn that was a fucking fine webcomic

This But it's also true for the whole of comics in general. Media is shifting away from them.

No, they are still going strong with a lot of people making them. YOU just spend less time reading them.

Less independent webcomics, but more webcomics being published onto webtoons, tapas, hiveworks, lezhin, et cetera.

worst is the artist has been MIA since 2017
runmonsterun.tumblr.com/

How much shota porn has this artist drawn? There has to be some that are public and a thousand times more stashed away on a very lucky hard drive.

Not even a Twitter?

Their Twitter's been dead for even longer.

What do you think is the percent of webcomics that actually get real endings? It's gotta be

Not dead yet! Sorry for shilling, but Run Monster, Run AKA Vaneda Vireak is actually publishing 51 Hundred! The first volume is supposed to come out on October 20 and will collect all the chapters available online, as well as an additional 40 new never-before-seen pages. OP's image is actually the volume's cover.

I know I'm shilling really hard, but I really do love the series. If the first volume sells well enough, Vireak might just continue the series! And if she doesn't, I'll still buy it to see the new pages. When it comes out, 51 Hundred will be sold here: chapterhouse.ca/51-hundred

Don't think she's done anything NSFW though admittedly the whole reason I started reading 51 Hundred is for the shota content. Maybe if someone introduces AnonAnim or another artist to the series, we might get something good.

Well, that's a nice development at least.

Fuck I LOVED that comic.

hate how much this dude lied about having pain

I was obsessed with this webcomic called Nothing Nice To Say like a decade ago, but then the creator just stopped updating and stopped paying for the domain name and the site died. Then this February he decides to put 95% of the strips in a big book and sell it through Amazon.

Can't blame him for wanting money but still, I don't see the point in paying $30 for shit I used to read on the internet for free.

Attached: nn2s.jpg (332x499, 51K)

I don't know how wristposting is still funny to me.

I think there's just more competition so not as much is rising to the heights that it used to outside of easily shareable lowest common denominator stuff.

It's because there's no "next big thing" comic currently out.

ill def buy this when this comes out. ty

That's a lot of shotas!

Readers became passive slobs, just waiting for the next thing to pop up in their twitter feed, never actively following anything.

you could read mine

Maybe someone itt can help me find an old webcomic I really liked but can’t find anymore.

It was about a girl who was a ghost, and the majority of the webcomic was just her wandering around aimlessly, occasionally catching snippets of people’s lives. I remember there was a part where she met other ghosts and they took her to a building where they were drawing all over the walls and floors and stuff.
It really stuck with me because the webcomic was just pages and pages and pages of her wandering in silence, but I haven’t been able to find it no matter how hard I try.

Not a disappeared author but dead like a bricked phone was "A Modest Destiny," this vibrant and fun web-comic with a shocking long continuity just stopped mid-storyline despite the creator to this day maintaining a blog on the site.

On the plus side, a webcomic I adored and was nothing for over a decade but a broken website with no functional way-back images has been properly backed-up counter-culture.smackjeeves.com/comics/2069160/001/ Now that I've done retail I can find out if Counter Culture holds up or if it was nothing but lolrandumxD weaboo shit

Attached: amd1-014.gif (640x448, 48K)

Olympus Overdrive may have been a wacky Homestuck ripoff, but it was MY wacky Homestuck ripoff.

patreon killed webcomics

I used to be a big webcomic reader but most of them like The Meek just stopped updating as the authors had to deal with real life issues.

God -DAMMIT- this comic was amazing. I loved it so much despite how little there is. I still remember the Rammstein references and the vampire girl to this day.

apparently the author is facing personal issues, but information has thus far only come from second hand sources

Attached: OSXhZSB.jpg (640x800, 162K)

A Modest Destiny and A Starship Destiny were phenomenal. The short run he had on the zombie comic was good too. I wish he updated...

Seriously, webcomics are dying because a creator can't pay the bills with page views. What did all of you think was going to happen?

Attached: 080314_Ledger_Joker.jpg (320x240, 33K)

Realistically it's because any artist good and dedicated enough to run a successful webcomic is good enough to get published or at least make a living as a commercial illustrator. Think about all the traits of a great webcomic. Decent to great art, reliable update schedule, and good at self promotion. Those are also all traits that will get you hired at a studio or ensure a steady flow of freelance work.

Ryan Armand didn't have enough money to fund his website, his house foreclosed, and some say he's actually dead right now.
It's bizarre to think that the author of Minus and Kiwi's By Beat is basically a literal who with no acknowledgment, financial success, fame, or really anything to speak of. If -and it's a big if- he is still alive he's most likely homeless right now.

It's so strange and painful.

We had a drawfag on /tg that started a comic based in Song of Swords, a game that got started on /tg and now has a real book and everything.
He stopped before it got going.

Technically was not super good, but it was OURS, you know?
Drawfag allegedly died several times but last I heard he was in the navy

Camp WDWY left me with so many questions, i hope the author comes back to it someday, but also i am happy for her for getting a directorial role in the Animstics reboot.

Came here to post this. Minus was a masterpiece that I'm still angry I didn't get a chance to buy the book of.

Also dead are Poppy Opossum and Double K.
Double K's author went legit and works for the Mouse now

>Dead Webcomics Thread
I miss Poppy. Even with how things were going at the end. I just haven't found a furfag comic that actually considers their characters have animals traits to such an extent.

That was back in the old days. Nowadays, even webcomics with decent support on Patreon inevitably end up dead. Perhaps the time has come for us to realize that the medium itself is cursed.

No, webcomics in general make shit compared to other mediums. Artists are better off just doing fanart or porn games. There's a handful of people making webcomics that rake in a lot of money but there's thousands of others that scrape by while putting in tons of effort. It's usually harder for webcomics that have been around for less than ten years.

>Obituary
>Larry Edward Latham, 61, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma died on November 2, 2014 after a brief but valiant battle with cancer. Larry was the son of the late Fred and Julia Latham and loving husband of Kelly Lynn Reynolds. He is survived by wife Kelly, as well as sister Susan Pollock and husband Alan of Edmond, Oklahoma, and uncle A.J. Telowicz and wife Tomiko of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews. Larry enjoyed a lengthy, wide and varied career in animation, film, TV, theater and teaching. He was only in junior high when he was one of the founding members of the Oklahoma Alliance of Fandom (O.A.F.), one of the earliest comics clubs in the nation which just held its 47th anniversary convention which Larry attended. Moving to California in his early 20’s after completing a degree in Motion Picture Production at the University of Oklahoma, he worked his way from low-budget movies (The Worm Eaters) until landing an internship and eventual job at Hanna-Barbera Studios in the storyboard department. He worked on many animated shows and graduated to directing and producing as well as continuing storyboarding at several major studios, including Universal, Walt Disney, Scholastic, and Berlin Film Company. He won an Emmy for TaleSpin in 1991. After moving back to Oklahoma in 2001, he designed sets for theaters and worked as a freelance storyboard artist and illustrator until discovering yet another passion—teaching–when he was hired as an instructor in 3D Modeling and Animation in the Visual Communications program at Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Larry thrived on sharing his knowledge and experience with his students and inspiring a new generation of artists and animators and felt he had finally found his calling in teaching.
... rest in next post

...
>He created the popular webcomic LOVECRAFT IS MISSING in 2009 and attracted many devoted followers. As Larry said, “I enjoy putting my own unadulterated work out there for people to respond to. If it’s good, then it’s because of what I’ve done, and if it’s bad, then I’m ready to take my lumps. But there’s no wondering how it might have worked if only I could have done what I wanted, rather than what I was told to do.” He was a consummate storyteller and wrote several works of fiction and non-fiction, obtaining a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing degree from National University in San Diego in 2012.
>
>A celebration of his life will be held on November 21, 11:00 a.m. at the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa. Larry requested that friends consider donations in lieu of flowers to one or more of the many causes he supported: Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, Humane Society of Tulsa, The Ned Hockman Filmmaking Award Fund at Oklahoma University, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Make-a-Wish Foundation, or any of the mission projects of Boston Avenue United Methodist Church. The family wishes to thank dear friends Patricia and Jorge Rodriguez for generously opening their home to Larry, family and friends, allowing Larry to spend his final hours on this earth peacefully in a familiar cherished setting filled with love.

I miss it too. The story had its problems, but the settings and (on a lot of things) the designs were fun and interesting.
And moreso i miss the early threads when it was just fun discussions and stuff instead of the sea of molten salt that the later threads were.

>I just haven't found a furfag comic that actually considers their characters have animals traits to such an extent.
It ain't a webcomic, but beastars is a perfect manga to scratch that itch. Latchkey kingdom doesn't do that but its also a fun arguably furry (i mean do fantasy critters count?) webcomic.
You can buy the full spiritual predecessor (70 seas) with some bonus comics included for like 5 bucks on the creator's website if i remember right.

It's going to come back right bros?

I live in fear that my old shitty webcomic will show up in one of these threads one day.

I suspect I'm not the only one.

What about old webcomics that actually finished their stories decently? Like, people always say they want to binge read a comic all the way through, but without updates and promotion nobody is going to find a finished webcomic.

- Bad Machinery by John Allison. mystery solving kids, chapter based, urban fantasy
- Copper, finished, fantasy, musings on life
- Derelict volume 1 finished, volume 2 paused last I checked, postapoc survival
- Digger, finished, fantasy
- Dr McNinja, finished, comedy
- Emily Carroll's short comics, most well known: His Face All Red
- Great by Minus, an epic
- Let's Speak English by Mary Cagle, journal comic on teaching Jap kids English

Thank god, it went into hiatus about a year ago and i couldn't be happier

Attached: download (2).jpg (184x274, 13K)

What webcomic?

I think it's a spurious correlation driven by two major factors. 1) By the time a person gains enough of a following to actually start making money off something, they're also at the point of maximum burnout. They've been slaving away at a passion project for what has probably been a while, and now that they're finally seeing returns, the passion has run out and all they see is the workload. Weirdly, I think money also plays a role in burnout. A friend of mine is a hobbyist photographer, but says he would never do it for money since it would just turn it into another job. But, since Patreon sites mostly run on momentum (A bunch of people could be donating $1 a month and just forget to unsubscribe) you can actually go a while without seeing any serious negative consequences for shirking your new job. So the artist takes it easy. Then there's 2) creative bankruptcy. Webcomics especially suffer from this. The reason more webcomics just stop instead of actually end is partly because the artist just stops giving a shit, but also because the artist had a cool premise for a comic but never really thought it through to the end. They didn't have a concrete plan for what they were going to do beyond a certain point but figured they'd have an idea by the time they actually got there. But it's pretty obvious that's not always the case. Even plotless gag-a-day comics suffer from this. You can only mine so many jokes from a premise, and stuff like Gone With the Blastwave is a good example of this.

So Patreon isn't really to blame it's more like it just brings along the kind of accountability expected by a serious cash flow. Plus it gives armchair internet analysts a way to numerically quantify a webcomic's lifespan. Patreon didn't create that lifespan though, it just made it easier to monitor.

If we're gonna shill web comics then i'm gonna recommend 'Scoob and Shag'. Starts out as a dumb meme comic that turns into a horror and then quickly becomes a battle shonen with a discount jojo power system.

>Double K's author went legit and works for the Mouse now
thank you for kicking my dick into oblivion.
I will never be erect again.

The problem as I see it as that most webcomic artists take it upon themselves to do art AND writing, which while admirable is also a lot of fucking work. enough to work to significantly obstruct your schedule or take a long time to hammer out
you either make it your job or deal with the fact you'll probably never realize your vision. and like pointed out above, making it your job requires other people to give you money purely out of good will
it's difficult thinking about how much potential will never be met or even seen at all

holy shit i remember this artist posting something on Yea Forums or /ic/. shame

i think the main problem is that they're all overambitious long projects with no clear endgame, which encourages burnout especially if the artist isn't making lots of consistent money from it. most people's first webcomic is, like, huge overarching plot, tons of worldbuilding, stuff that kicks even experienced writers in the teeth

Attached: 761.jpg (650x1011, 225K)

>Camp WDWY
user...I don't know how to put this, but...

Hmm, you know, that's the only webcomic that really has me feeling gripped for each update right now.

Necropolis was never consistent. James Wyatt has an actual career and really only makes pages when he and his wife have downtime.

Oh man, just found out the only reason the archive was uploaded is because the writer for Counter Culture fucking died.

I guess growing up with webcomics still skews my perception of it as young, it's surprising how many creators in this thread are either confirmed or implied dead or destitute.

I know what you mean, it's so easy to assume that every webcomic creator is a twenty-something. I only found out yesterday that the guy who did Gastrophobia is in his 40s.

Speaking of which, Gastrophobia is a dead webcomic.

Attached: 1491613707035.png (600x789, 892K)

Damn you hit the nail on the head, the ambitious long-form of a lot of amateur creators over-relies on really big plot twists and reveals and character developments that are arcs & arcs away but doesn't put thought or relevance into building satisfying short-term narratives to keep themselves and an audience invested in the current story.

10 years ago you could make a living from adsense revenue (adblock and changing opinions of the value of these ads to corporations basically killed this), so comics with high viewcounts actually got paid accordingly. It's kind of hard to slip a sponsored by skillshare add into a webcomic. Also the internet is a lot more centralized around social media hubs now, so you need to have a product that is shareable via a major social media platform or youtube, so if it's a comic you basically have no way to monetize it outside of merchandise and patreon.

It's been 5 years with no word, and I'm still holding out

Attached: 2014-12-3-318-santa.jpg (550x550, 84K)

Whatever happened to Loli loves venom. is that artist still around? That shit was adorable.

holy shit i forgot this existed. i was subscribed to the newsletter and everything.

I had that exact thought as soon as this was posted.

not only that, people generally get better at writing and art the more they do it. so they become good writers stuck working with an amateurish setup, and a visually inconsistent product.

I can't believe no one's mentioned Elf yet.

Attached: #5 Goblin Hero.jpg (900x712, 182K)

Hopeful bump in case someone can answer

Could you do your best to describe the art style? I'll try to find it

Demonology 101 is worth a read.
Heart Shaped Skull is a... webcomic that has been completed? Setting is originalish urban fantasy, plot is generic.
Spindrift is still running, althou with hiastuses so long I feel it deserved a mention.

Someone needs to move paranatural over to the shit pile.

VINDICATION

Attached: Stonebreaker break-announce.jpg (800x1276, 142K)

Demonologywas removed from the author's website in 2017. Is there any way to read it now?

I did not know that. Crap, I don't know.

why didnt we listen to this prophet

Attached: 2007-02-19.jpg (759x461, 215K)

I was just thinking today about how much I fucking miss this comic.

It's not a mystery what happened to it, though. It just didn't make any money, so the creator switched his efforts to one that did, which is still going strong today. One I am not interested, but I don't begrudge him or its fans for it.

Still...it hurts to lose something that nails all your niche interests like that.

Attached: tumblr_nnqqb4VfHa1qkx8q9_r3_og_540.jpg (525x810, 144K)

It was a manga/anime style. Pretty sure the story took place in Asia, and the author was either Asian or inspired by the style.
I remember a part where she tried to talk to people about movies with people leaving theaters, if that helps anything

I don't know if that's true or not, but what I do know is whoever draws/runs Gastrophobia turned into a card-board cutout ''''sjw''''. I'm talking transgender, change their name to daisy, draws MLP comics/OOc on tumblr while tweeting mindless arm-chair politics.

And the upsetting part about this is I'm not the type of person to use this sort of vocabulary. This is in no way an exaggeration. I truly have no idea what the hell happened to them to have such an unhealthy heel-turn.

Wew, you weren't kidding. It's funny, the only update Gastrophobia has had in a long time was the author doing a find-and-replace of David to Daisy.

Oh speak of the devil

Just because we can't talk about it (and a lot, I mean A LOT of other comics too) on Yea Forums doesn't mean there aren't people who like it here.

Alright figured it out, had to use wayback machine to get a version of Demonology from 2016. Curious about what it's like, I'm a sucker for urban fantasy.

go away ian your show sucks

the last I saw of that comic was a 'FUCK YOU GUYS IT'S OVER STOP BOTHERING US FUUUUUCK' kind of ending. It's kinda sad that a show tons more people will see won't have the level of emotional investment and plot involved in a FF7 parody from two decades ago

YES! Yes that’s the one!
>14 pages
What??
WHAT??

Why do all webcomic artist gradually become gay?

Zachsanomaly?

Whatever happened to Unknown-person ? He had animations in addition to his comic
youtube.com/watch?v=6oDOcmWkIJY

>unknown person was a guy
Well, I’ll be damned.

This is the last thing he seems to have made?
vimeo.com/164309739

>>unknown person was a guy
What made you think they were female ?

All his characters were skinny beanpole guys with tragic backstories, I guess I just associated a lot of his stuff with feminine interests because of how many people in his fanbase were girls.

Anyway found his IMDb page, looks like he went legit working on the mlp movie and is working as an “animation mentor” according to his LinkedIn so that explains why he vanished

Thanks!

Funny that you mentioned ol' Pained Moaningson: I actually had a dream last night that I was checking out the sod's Twitter for some reason, finding out he wasn't some "non-binary" person (still don't get how it really works) anymore but now a trans lady named Lily complete with a real life profile picture...

a lot of trans use non-binary as a stepping stone. as a consequence, some trans don't really believe non-binary is legit a thing.

that's wholesome, hope he has a good career

>Wholesome
I guess but were never gonna get more of his comic or original animations

I remember checking the site everyday hoping for a new page, but instead i got the "buy my book" page every time

>(still don't get how it really works)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-binary_gender

But this has a canonical ending via TV.

On the contrary if he gets into the industry he can pitch his weird theme park cartoon or whatever the fuck that was, to get it off the ground for real.

bump

>That time someone storytimed it on Yea Forums and they were actually into it.
