Kids always find ways to sneak a peak at material not meant for them. They'll always sneak into R-rated movies and trick their parents into renting M-rated games. Comics were no different. If parents are bothered by that, it's their job to police what their kids are exposed to, not the industry's.

I think the area and location of what they were in would have contributed more to the behavior of children in impoverished areas more than the comics they would use for escapism.
I mean, plenty of places that have a higher juvenile delinquency rate don’t have any more or less access to comics than places where such delinquency is low. So I fail to see how his research isn’t already based on pure correlation without realizing it might not even be the causation.

muh low crime rate is bullshit when stats are directly controlled by the media. Some things are effectively kept hidden from the public eye so they don't interfere with the view people has of Japan in general. Especially after the insanely high crime rates Japan had in the 80s. In a way, the gang action shown in Akira wasn't entirely fiction, youths were larping The Warriors all day every day. And the decision to keep everything hidden and avoid direct responsibility was how the 98 crash and Fukushima happened. When things get out of hand that you can't control them anymore, Japan is just forced to admit the most fucked up aspects of their own culturw (like hikikomoris or the fact that gender segregated subways are a thing because Japan has one of the highest rates of sexual harassment in public transportation in the world). Until then, you know what they want you to know.
