If you can find the 1940 movie then that’s pretty good. Much better and true to the book than the Antonio Banderas version.
I like the character, but I think the Scarlet Pimpernel is just better all around. But there’s no good movie of him, so oh well.
Also. Bump.
Zorro was my #1 childhood hero. I grew up primarily on the live action TV version - the 90's one and the classic Disney one. I first got into the character by reading those Italian comics based off the Disney show though. Those were pretty good.
Bump, any one remembers the 90's cartoon?
I loved the shit out of the tv-series.
Alex Toth
Which one?
There's a few episodes on YouTube, but the rest are currently lost outside of foreign dubs.
Lone vigilante fighting corrupt colonial authorities plays a lot better than english dandy rescues French aristos from the guillotine, that's a hard thing to make relevant to modern audiences, most of whom only have Les Mis as a point of reference for that period.
The one with the Native American grandma and the girl sidekick with the floppy hat? I've fond memories of that. Like the time travel episode where things got fucked up when Zorro vanished and the fat bumbling captain killed the governor, ruled California with an iron fist and lost weight and got ripped as fuck. Or the steampunk episode with Spanish Sherlock Holmes.
Was just going to ask if there even was one other than the Filmation version.
There's an 90s anime version too that was dubbed in a few countries.
There's also a newer 3D CGI cartoon. I've not seen much of it but it appears to be loosely based on the old Disney live action series to an extent (Monastario, sgt Garcia etc. appear).
The Scarlet Pimpernel is just a better written book. There’s actually a mystery to it instead of Zorro, mostly because there is a delay in news and the better characterization. comparing to the all consuming personality of the essentric fop, to the point that he fooled the people closest to him, to “I’m so lazy, it can’t be me,” persona. It really is a shame that Scarlet Pimpernel doesn’t get the love it deserves.
It wouldn’t be that hard to make the aristos sympathetic. Show some of them have little left to them but their titles: perhaps some of them are families ruined by gambling, scandal, unsound financial decisions. Some of them even cut off from their families due to not going with an arranged marriage. Not to mention, you know, putting whole families to death by guillotine. Besides, Robespierre is not the most likable fellow, is he?
Also, Les Miserables and Scarlet Pimpernel occur at different time periods. The former occurs long after the second French Revolution, where the latter occurs around the time of the first French Revolution. That’s a time difference of 30+ years. That would be like mixing up the War of 1812 with the Revolutionary War. You don’t even really need to make that distinction, as the June Rebellions are less famous than the Reign of Terror.
>What Zorro comics are worth reading
I thought Dynamite's Zorro: Year One and The Lone Ranger: The Death of Zorro were pretty good.

I thought this was the greatest thing ever until I saw the little zorro kid
>tfw WB released a Volume 1 DVD years ago, and are probably still sitting on the rights
>tfw The Curse of Capistrano ended with a committee of middle-class businessmen arriving during a sword fight to deliver a strongly-worded petition
I enjoyed it for the most part, but god DAMN that ending
Weren’t they upper-class?
Huh... that does sound pretty cool. Let me ju-
>mfw there are 17 Scarlet Pimpernel books
...yeah, that was a pretty low back for something that looked so sweet otherwise.
At least that damsel owns a gun, though. I didn't expect to see her pull out a piece. The show's on youtube so I think it's worth checking out unless the kid is SUPER prominent.
The guy inspired Zorro and Batman for a reason user. Part of it being there was a lot of fucking material to inspire people.
To be fair the first novel is entirely self contained, so at least for the first one you can read it and stop. There’s no great cliffhanger to make it feel cheap and the ending is pretty satisfying.
Unlike Tarzan, where it ends kind-of on a cliffhanger and laughs at the idea of just 17 books and goes for 26.
Pulp fiction just has a lot of books, but I believe a good chunk of pulp fiction novels are either in the Public Domain or about to be (if Disney can stop mucking about with our copyright system for one goddamn time). I’d suggest giving it a try, it’s a pretty good read.
Guy Williams
Bump
Nice
To be fair, those are mostly short stories
>1940s movie
Come on bro, be cool.
You know, Toth always resented that people loved his Zorro work so much because that was the only thing he did that anyone talked about
He ok
The 50’s TV show with Guy Williams is the definitive version of Zorro.
I’m glad we all agree.
That´s fucking cold Clark
>Scarlet Pimpernel is just a better written book.
But it's really more of a romance than adventure
