Why can't it just be S for Superman like it originally was.
It's like writers just want people to feel alienated from superman even more by making it some alien house crest or symbol for hope or some other stinky nonsense.
Here's a good idea for the origin of the symbol
>Metropolis Police Department (MPD) symbol has the diamond shape around it's initials. >After getting the name of superman from the press he just whacks an s inside the diamond
According to Mark Waid, the WB execs HATE Superman and want to change the character purely because they're embarrassed to be associated with it. That probably explains everything that's been done with Superman since the New 52.
Matthew Kelly
Because it is silly that the S symbol given to him by his father when he was a baby would mean the superhero title he would end up calling himself decades later on the alien planet that happens to use the same symbol for the letter S. It being a family crest meaning "hope" is some cosmic coincidence silliness, but it is 10x better than thinking Jor-El was somehow pulling off the most shot in the dark plan perfectly.
Elijah Roberts
Where is it written the S symbol has to be given to him by his father?
Justin Taylor
Superman's heroing career and insignia predates him going to Metropolis, plus just ripping off the cops is dumb. In the end people just like the bit of mythology even if it's kind of a stretch but comics are full of that shit.
Jeremiah Moore
Well for sure by the reboot during the 80s, but I assume during early stories where his origin is told (possibly in the radio show). Also by reason since his Superman suit doesn't get destroyed during fights, and therefore the material must come from somewhere otherworldly like Krypton with baby supes.
Daniel Gonzalez
>Mark Waid About that...
Austin Murphy
It's ok to not read comics, you don't have to pretend you do to fit in. If there is one subject no one will deny Waid's authority on, that subject is Superman.
Joshua Collins
Shut up faggot. I’m tired of you idiots trying to “fix” shit
Jacob Perez
Wasn't there a micro field force around supes that made anything he wore indestructible? I remember something like that from the 90's (maybe The Adventures of Louis & Clark).
Ryan Gray
It's more than Waid talking about that, and we know the driving force was Jon Peters and his insane fascination with giant spiders.
Charles Perez
Or Clark put an S on his blanket and suit. Like seriously, chill.
Josiah Bell
Not him but Waid's opinions on Superman are weird as fuck. Like he considers that Superman is super moral like it's a superpower because of his alien genes rather than anything to do with his human upbringing. Overall he's pretty big on Krypton playing a big part of why Superman is who he is, and I'm generally not a fan of that.
Christopher Jackson
But that's exactly what "the S stands for hope" shit is, a series of trying to fix something that wasn't broken because some autist thought it was weird that Superman's costume didn't suffer battle damage.
Christian Harris
>NOT MUH! Supermanfags in Yea Forums are worse than youtube fans, but superdaddyfags are the most autistic people in this fucking board.
Jaxon Lee
It does make sense from a multiversal standpoint, considering Superman veers towards good even when raised by other upbringings like in Red Son or Last Family. Beyond just flipped morals like Earth3, Supes is generally still a goodguy. Even his nazi self wasn't pure evil.
Elijah Hall
>Overall he's pretty big on Krypton playing a big part of why Superman is who he is Aka he likes Silver Age Supes and hates Byrne faggotry. Pretty based.
Oliver Cook
Nah, better be a symbol of his house that was later associated with Lois calling him "Superman". It's literally two for one, so I don't see the problem.
And I also like his suit being a kryptonian suit.
Michael Lee
I guess, it's just pretty lame compared to him being at least morally human. You make him literally more alien in the only way he was still a human aside from his appearance, Superman doesn't need to be further alienated from human condition imo.
Robert Lopez
I don't blame them. He's a pain in the ass type of character to write for unless spectacle is the whole point of your story. Relatability isn't just a meme
Aaron Wright
>He's a pain in the ass type of character to write for unless spectacle is the whole point of your story. Yeah, you have to actually put in effort, god fucking forbid.
Gabriel Fisher
Superman is way more reliable than like half the justice league though.
I'm fine with either interpretation, I think it would just depend on the story. I'm assuming this clip is meaning Kingdom Come, in which I might lean more with Ross in that story's case. But yeah there are often times that Superman's kindness or power just seem beyond human. Like how Ennis writes him as the friendliest motherfucker who can make even cold assassins love him, or Morrison's golden Superman Prime (hard to view that as still human).
