This decision makes complete financial sense for Sony when compared to the 50/50 offer. And if we want to talk quality, and not money, the literal only bad Spider-Man movies are the Holland ones, which Sony will be continuing either way.

The issue is that the Spider-man movies had a decreasing box office after 3, and they even actually had losses with Amazing 2 due to high production and marketing costs. The franchise in general was just mishandled and seemingly losing value before Marvel stepped in.
