We need to have a discussion on the absolute state of comics right now. How did we end up with so much garbage?

Watchmen.

Because you’re a nerd.

Marvel.

What era?

Oh, you must be under 30 or something.

Kiddo, it aint great now, but we're been through a LOT worse.

There's little incentive to become a big two writer or artist right now when you can go independent and get money from deals with publishers like Image, or just set up a pateron and rake in thousands every month drawing fanart or lewds.

That being said there's still plenty of good stuff being published, you just have to look around to find it. Shit like Batman, Superman, Justice League, Avengers etc being bad was more the norm than anyone here would honestly like to admit, it's just that we're all focusing on how bad they are right now because, well, they're being published right now. I guaran-fucking-tee that half the posters here will flip and say they actually loved Tom King when he leaves Batman and the new guy takes over.

I'm pretty disillusioned with superhero comics right now, but I don't know if they've gotten any worse, or if I'm just at the point where I've been reading long enough that I've been through too many cycles of recycled stories and derivative status-quo shakeups.

I haven't kept up with new series for a few years now. When I poke my head in to see what's happening, very little makes me want to read. "You know about rh Speed Force, but have you heard about the Limbo Lantern Still Force Who Laughs?" None of this feels like the main point is telling a captivating story, it feels like it's all about wanking off to its own mythology for its own sake instead of in service to a good narrative.

cape comics were always 90% bad fuck off

It started right at the beginning when it developed as a commercial artform and people other than the creators started to do issues. The differences in people's points of view built up over time to the morass of continuity issues and ratcheting power levels we have now.

There's always been a mountain of garbage. This is how media works. 99% of it is terrible and occasionally a gem comes along. Comics aren't somehow an exception.
