It was just a phase.

The original version had the problem having the defining characteristic of refusing to give a shit about anything other than vidya (and pizza that one time). This means to use her as anything other than a quipping soundboard for Dib to exposit to you have to bend backwards to involve vidya somehow, which they did several times in the TV series. It makes the character rather stiff.

Just changing her personality is a little funky, though.

Maybe it's because this movie is better written, but does anyone else like the idea of Dib and his whole family (including the robot and I suppose the failed father clone) fighting against Zim's destructive schemes is a better dynamic than Dib alone? Dib on his own could also get grating. But Gaz keeps him in check. Then his father shows the more endearing side to Dib as the little boy who wants his father's acknowledgement.

I enjoyed Dib's struggle as the lonely underdog against both Zim and the people around him just shitting on him, with the occasional super weirdo kind-of-ally. Problem is that those allies were always a one time thing and it was back to Dib just getting shat on.

Having the family around is nice because he's still getting shat on, but this time by people who actually care deep down. Tak's ship is also a good contribution, as a rough equivalent of Zim's very angry computer (I hope it's still functional after the events of the movie)

I just watched it it was pretty good, but I dunno, I watched the Tak epsiode right before the movie and I liked it better. Episode had a lot more black comedy, movie was pretty lighthearted in comparison. Kinda less visual gags in the movie as well, plus all the weird stuff in the episode like the crawling weiners and the valentines meat. I guess it was just more unique in its atmosphere.
Also Gaz did a lot in that episode too.

It was still fun though, glad there was a lot of Membrane, and I really liked how he cared more about Gaz and Dib.

I’ve loved the original series for at least 15 years and I thought the movie was great. The colours looked slightly more washed out compared to similar scenes than the original, but I never noticed until it was pointed out to me here. It’s still top tier artwork. And the fact that it wasn’t as edgy as Dark Harvest didn’t bug me either. Bloaty vomits up an entire pizza in a commercial in the movie, the post-teleported Urth looks pretty dystopian, and the prisoners on Moo-Ping 10 are burned and left to die/rot in jail. For a “kid’s show” it still felt on average just as edgy as the original series, pushing he limit of what could be acceptable and still get the rating it did. Everything you could love about the original series is still in the movie somewhere. I’m not as much into the lul so randum xd humour as was when I was in grade school, and I did get the impression that the movie realized that and kept Gir’s shenanigans to a minimum as a result. I still laughed at the flaming nuts and when his horse tippled over a gentle breeze.

To me, the thing that makes Florpus "softened" is that everything looks a lot cleaner than it did in the show. Earth was fucking filthy besides Dib and Zim's houses in the show, at it gave everything a darker atmosphere, also with Florpus being brighter in the literal sense. I don't see the appeal in it. Also noticed how it was drawn twice. The second time giving her the miniskirt, because Membrane being a female is really dumb she'd slut it up. She has a daughter who looks up to her user.

Probably a hold over from before they were Cyborg Pod People. Might just be for genetic variety to prevent them all from being trainwrecks like Zim. Or a backup incase the Smeet facilities go down.

Her character was way better this time around. She had a personality outside of hating everything and everyone, which lead to some great character interactions amongst her and her family.
Coming from someone who owns the DVDs and watched the original series as it aired, I thought the special was pretty pretty enjoyable.
Invader Zim was gross and grimdark, but that wasn't the only thing that made it so great. A lot of it was the beautiful animation and dialogue between the voice actors, which I thought shined here. There were lots of great gags (anything with the tallists, mini moose stealing the pizza sticker, "SCIENTIFICALLY IMPOSSIBLE!") and I found myself laughing out loud quite a bit.

Was it perfect?? Hell no. At certain points it looked like it was animated with toon boom, but at least those were during moments of levity. The pacing in the first half is also off, but it certainly picks up as it goes along. If you hated this thing, I honestly don't know why the original show appealed to you so much in the first place. Especially enough to shitpost and samefag on a chinese basket weaving forum

The top thing that makes Invader Zim memorable to me is the VA performances. Very distinct, bombastic, and fun. You don't have Dipper clones wandering around like in every modern cartoon AKA unsure vaguely wishy washy white guy voice.

Came here looking for this. Rocko really disappointed me. I watched it today expecting a somewhat similar experience to what I had with Zim yesterday, but it was just not even close. All the jokes about modern life, like smartphone releases or food chains, fell flat because they have already been done to death before. Rocko innovated in absolutely nothing there. All the meta jokes about just wanting the "old cartoon" was also weird, and the thing with Rachel was a bit too heavy-handed in a cartoon that did use to have social commentary but did it in a much more subdued way. This was like a slap to the face with a bag of bricks. None of what I remember Rocko being like, nor the pure entertainment value Enter the Florpus had.
