No, both ZaGR and ZaDR were always popular. Back then the traditional and slash fandom groups were kind of seperate. Traditional fans wrote ZimxGaz (and eventually some, but less, DibxTak, much less often ZimxTak, much much less often DidxGaz incest or even GazxGIR). Slash fans wrote ZimxDib.
Which one was more popular depended on the specific communities you were in at the time. Probably slash because there were more male characters and they and their relationships were more important.
