Parker - Thunderbolts

Been a long while I storytimed anything. Hope everyone enjoys some fun Thunderbolts issues with Luke Cage not being a total knob.

PM-IF user?

Attached: Thunderbolts 144-002.jpg (1988x3056, 1.15M)

Nah. More known for super crappy opinions and getting drunk and taking out my frustrations on characters after bad breakups.

This comic is one of the influences I constantly reference when thinking about adopting this horizontal layout in my comic. Walker stalks horiztonal panels of varying size on top of one another and while he deviates at point, this is his standard mode of operation. It gives the comic such a unique feel and manages to ensure at no point do you ever question what's going on. He doesn't even use split panels, just smaller horizontal panels to accommodate the space requirements. I love 3x3 but god damn is this effective storytelling.

Attached: Thunderbolts 144-004.jpg (1988x3056, 1.27M)

Do peeps view this style of panel layouts lazy or just another method of storytelling? I previously used 2x4 but don't feel I ever truly took advantage of it to its fullest extent. I think the horizontal stack would be the easiest way to plot things out and ensure simplicity for the reader (just read down the page), but the 3x3 grid offers the greatest degree of control but to properly utilize takes work. Years of working on my own scripts make me feel more confident with 3x3 but I always think I should just stick with the stack and modify from there.

Attached: Thunderbolts 144-006.jpg (1988x3056, 1.29M)

This scene alone made me realize that Parker has a handle on Luke Cage that Bendis only dreamed he could have. And he manages to do it without reducing Cage to a goddamn stereotype.

Attached: Thunderbolts 144-007.jpg (1988x3056, 1.12M)

Attached: Thunderbolts 144-008.jpg (1988x3056, 1.35M)

I love this run, thanks user.

Luke is fucking ruthless! The true mark of a good T-Bolts field leader.

Attached: Thunderbolts 144-009.jpg (1988x3056, 1.21M)

Nice. This is a fantastic run.

Attached: Thunderbolts 144-010.jpg (1988x3056, 1.05M)

I am so glad you all enjoy. Was worried this wouldn't be popular enough to gather an audience but I'm glad I was wrong.

Attached: Thunderbolts 144-011.jpg (1988x3056, 1.35M)

Weirdly, I didn't take any of what Marko said as a threat. Dude seems to know what he can do and what he'll probably be used for. Nothing he said was factually wrong.

Attached: Thunderbolts 144-012.jpg (1988x3056, 1.44M)

>getting drunk
Texas?

I'm with Luke on this one.

Attached: Thunderbolts 144-013.jpg (1988x3056, 1.04M)

I only jumped on this book after the team went full AWOL but gearing about Parker’s Luke is heartening.

I like how Walker's art has changed so much over the years.
His editor should have caught that he confused Satana for Lilith though (in costumes)

I strongly feel that he should bring back his classic Beetle costume. He was actually the first Spider-Man villain I ever watched on TV.

Attached: Thunderbolts 144-014.jpg (1988x3056, 1.53M)

Think more angry and bitter.

Attached: Thunderbolts 144-015.jpg (1988x3056, 1.16M)

I miss Songbird's old hairstyle

I love that Parker likes Pym. Dude should have been a reserve member or something but then I remember he's on Remender's Secret Avengers team and all is forgiven.

Attached: Thunderbolts 144-016.jpg (1988x3056, 1.32M)

I think is a really great method of storytelling, it's simple but effective.
I got it recommended in one of the /shelf/ threads and it got me hooked immediately

I love Man Thing but I need more Swamp Thing exposure. Anyone know how the new show is? I adored Doom Patrol and consider it in my top five cape seasons of all time.

Attached: Thunderbolts 144-017.jpg (1988x3056, 1.86M)

Long hair is super sexy. As one of my friends said, when you see a chick with super short hair she is either a fighter or she has given up on life.

Attached: Thunderbolts 144-018.jpg (1988x3056, 1.34M)

Working on my own comic has made me so conscientiousness of how panel layout dictates the flow of the story and while I really want to use 3x3 to use a classic approach to a modern story, I can't ignore that the horizontal stack allows me to think more fluidly, capitalize on left-right space, and to ensure that the scripts are easily translatable to page. I just don't know which to stick with as converting an issue to a different layout is an endeavor.

Cage is such an awesome character in this series. Not just a self insert for Bendis' black power fantasies.

Attached: Thunderbolts 144-019.jpg (1988x3056, 1.29M)

>Anyone know how the new show is?
No clue. I'm being completely serious when I say that 99% of the hype for that show died when it was revealed that it was actually cancelled before it released. People found out because WB stopped paying rent for set storage.
The first episode was pretty good, and it had crazy special effects. But I never bothered to track down the rest of the season.
Plus, it had it's episode count cut during production, so whatever ending they had is not what they planned.
As for comics, Moore is the highlight, but pretty much everyone after him have moments in volume 2. Veitch is good despite getting fucked at the end, and the guy hired to replace him had some good ideas but rough art and rougher execution.

Love this shot.

Attached: Thunderbolts 144-021.jpg (1988x3056, 1.3M)

Cranky? I didn't think cranky ever storytimed.
Anyways, I'm pretty much out of named storytimers, and I don't remember x-user being angry

Attached: Thunderbolts 144-022.jpg (1988x3056, 1.19M)

Well alright. Now it's officially a Thunderbolts title.

Attached: Thunderbolts 144-023.jpg (1988x3056, 1.04M)

The "you want me on your side" is making him seem like Cage needs him more than the other way around. Sign of power for someone that's supposed to be working for someone else. I can see Cage not liking a prisoner he doesn't want telling him he should be lucky.

ProfessorBro lol. I think my cynicism probably ranged depending on the storytime.

Attached: Thunderbolts 145-000.jpg (1988x3056, 1.7M)

I completely understand that line of reasoning, I guess I'm just thinking off pure logic so his comment doesn't raise any alarms. Yes, I would love to have a fucking Juggernaut on my side but I still have an entire talent pool at my disposal. Juggernaut is the epitome of, win some you lose some.

Parker is my favorite Luke Cage writer

My fucking man.

Attached: Thunderbolts 145-005.jpg (1988x3056, 1.36M)

here and reading. its been awhile

I love how Pym tried too much to help prisoners for most of his Mighty Avengers/Avengers Academy time.

moonstone is who's villain ?

She was adopted by Carol in civil war, that's all I know

Attached: Thunderbolts 145-006.jpg (1988x3056, 1.85M)

>Works fine.
I love this version of Luke.

Attached: Thunderbolts 145-007.jpg (1988x3056, 1.54M)

You can practically hear Karla's panties drop after that verbal lashing. Sploosh.

Attached: Thunderbolts 145-008.jpg (1988x3056, 1.3M)

And now we're back to the horizontal stack. I feel like the last series that did this was The Authority and I will argue the panel layout did afford the series a more cinematic feel to it (I feel like Millar's Ultimates wasn't afraid to emphasize the horizontal panel). Does anyone else have any recommendations for more of this panel layout?

Attached: Thunderbolts 145-009.jpg (1988x3056, 1.52M)

Attached: Thunderbolts 145-010.jpg (1988x3056, 1.46M)

Attached: Thunderbolts 145-011.jpg (1988x3056, 1.45M)

It's not something I consciously notice, sorry

Kev Walker was a beast on this book

Moonstone has always been a Ms Marvel villain

I remember the Songbird/Classic Thunderbolts stans relentlessly shat on this book. They're as bad as hard-core Rich Novafags. Something about B-list books brings out the autism.

You're golden. Literally the only reason I pay attention meow is because I've had to write my own scripts and planning for an anonymous artist does not do your confidence any favors. Aside from giving artists scripts and telling them to wing it, I feel like horizontal stack will allow them the greatest amount of flexibility while still operating within your established parameters.

That said, unless you write scripts like Alan Moore and provide sketches of the pages, having an artist operate the 3x3 grid without being in constant contact is a terrible idea. Also while i love the layout I feel that having that amount of control over the artistic expression diminishes what the artist could bring to the table.

I'd love to hear from someone that has had to convert a comic script to a page so I know how to best accommodate for your wishes. I heard some artists love having everything spelled out so they just follow the guide whereas some love the freedom of expression to take your idea and make it theirs.

John Cassaday does this quite a bit

Attached: Thunderbolts 145-016.jpg (1988x3056, 1.83M)

all this time I thought man thin was just a mindless killer

FUCK YESSSSS!!!!! Thank you for mentioning Cassaday! I had also added his work on Astonishing X-Men and Uncanny Avengers to my influences for that art style. It's so simplistic on first viewing but realizing that while the horizontal space is always static but the vertical space could be whatever you want it to be really appeals to me. I think the big reason is that because the panel layout itself is so basic, I could potentially pencil and letter the entire thing from scratch as I only have to work on penciling small yet wide pictures lol (this is an awful idea and I would never be successful at it).

Attached: Thunderbolts 145-017.jpg (1988x3056, 1.8M)

Attached: Thunderbolts 145-018.jpg (1988x3056, 1.76M)

I'm here for ya. I'm willing to continue if you are. I can go from Parker-Bolts to Parker-Dark Avengers. Again, only if I'm not inconveniencing too many people. Not having a pass makes my posting much slower.

Attached: Thunderbolts 145-022.jpg (1988x3056, 1.89M)

>Do peeps view this style of panel layouts lazy or just another method of storytelling?
I like it, mainly because it reminds me of Bill Watterson. He liked to use full Horizontal panels to create feelings of space and isolation or distance. Or, as a convenient place for his editors to chop off so they could fit more strips on a page. He called them "throwaway Panels" because of the latter use.

Perhaps these fight scene panels are askew to show the how chaotic things are

Oh shit son

Attached: Thunderbolts 145-023.jpg (1988x3056, 2.11M)

>Parker's first issue - Thunderbolts #144 sold 33,276
>Parker's last "Thunderbolts" issue - Thunderbolts #174 sold 18,792

>Parker's Dark Avengers #175 - 39,532
>Parker's Dark Avengers #190 - 15,905

Why's he cursed bros?

best girl

honestly I dropped the book when it became Dark Avengers, just lost interest in the new direction

If this scene was ever adapted, I'd want them to alter the angles, so you can never actually see him. There's something really fucky about actually seeing Ghost's face. I was introduced to Ghost through this run, but I still don't like it. The viewer should never know what he looks like without his mask.

wait no, his first issue was Thunderbolts #138 during Dark Reign
>31,224

Weird question, but would readers consider a beginner's attempt at the 4x4 grid needlessly pretentious or would they give them slack for trying? My only real exposure was Miller's Dark Knight Returns and I was goddamn floored. It allows for literally any page imaginable. Depressing and Uplifting? Action heavy and morose? The possible layouts of 4x4 which includes 2x4 is seriously on another level. All that said, would Yea Forums be pissoed off if a writer didn't stick the landing with that layout or would they appreciate the effort?

Attached: Thunderbolts 145-024.jpg (1988x3056, 1.29M)

Attached: Thunderbolts 146-000.jpg (1988x3056, 1.71M)

I think that it shows way better in Planetary, specially when they capture the not-human torch. Also it is not a bad idea to do your own panel layouts, you can see how the story flows, but if you are working with an artist ask first if there's any problems with that.

Just gave it a look and I would say Batman: Last Crusade adopts a variation of the 4x4 but Romita definitely has fun from start to finish. Truly a joy to read.

Attached: Thunderbolts 146-001.jpg (1988x3056, 1.46M)

I need to give Planetary a serious read (only read it passingly). I think I'm operating from a fixed layout because I am planning for this to be interpreted by another artist and I HAVE to have a layout that I know "works" if that makes sense. I have to ensure that the script I provide can be interpreted by a true dipshit with no artistic abilities because I don't know who I would be paired with. If I had an artist in mind, I'd be more free with my layouts but because I have absolutely no one in mind I have to be a bit more deliberate.

Attached: Thunderbolts 146-002.jpg (1988x3056, 1.68M)

>I'm a man you want ON YOUR SIDE
It's subtle, but it's there. Probably something Luke heard a lot back in his days in Sing Sing. Or was it Ryker's?

According to the MCU it was Seagate.

Attached: Thunderbolts 146-003.jpg (1988x3056, 1.59M)

>It's subtle, but it's there. Probably something Luke heard a lot back in his days in Sing Sing. Or was it Ryker's?
Now that it's laid out like that, I get it. My unique experiences prevent me from interpreting intimidation and just viewed it as "duh facts".

Attached: Thunderbolts 146-004.jpg (1988x3056, 1.51M)

Ah, poor girl's mom. I've read some Japanese comics about that exact scenario.

To be fair it's the kind of threat that doesn't translate well in printed media because the it relies highly on the tone it's said in, the artist did his best to convey it in his face, but again the thing that would differentiate it from a statement of fact and a benign threat is tone of voice so yeah

Attached: Thunderbolts 146-005.jpg (1988x3056, 1.53M)

Attached: Thunderbolts 146-006.jpg (1988x3056, 1.24M)

I really think it's just me not registering. I'm not autistic, but unless a threat is absolutely obvious I view it as the person trying to be intimidating while incorporating passive aggression and that doesn't even phase me. I'm too used to dealing with obvious assholes to the point where the indirect ones are phased out lol.

>Weird question, but would readers consider a beginner's attempt at the 4x4 grid needlessly pretentious or would they give them slack for trying?
I'd say, unless I was aware of the name, I wouldn't know a beginner from an expert.

Not really fiending, her whole thing is psych profiling people and trying to find ways to manipulate them, she's trying to get him to sleep with her just so she can use him. The way she keeps trying to come up with new ways to get ahead and failing really made the run fun.

Attached: Thunderbolts 146-017.jpg (1988x3056, 1.9M)

You'd think for someone as intelligent as her Luke wouldn't cheat on Jessica Jones in a million years unless she cheated first and he verbally declared he checked out of the marriage. Dude has a moral compass that is unwavering in every sense of the word....unless he makes promises to Osborn. Then Luke is a shifty shitball.

Man-Thing's pose game should not be as strong as it is. He's not even capable of cognitive reasoning, but he always knows when to pose like a team. Or like he's done anything in the last few pages.

I'm planning on dropping acid in the future. What comic media should i watch while tripping? Here are some options.

>Legion S03
>The Boys S01
>Doom Patrol S01
>Movie Options: The Incredibles, Into the Spider-Verse, Hellboy 1-2, X-Men First Class, Days of Future Past, Dick Tracy, Constantine (Keanu Version), Mystery Men, Hercules.

TV Options:
Corporate S02, Agents of Shield most recent season, Frisky Dingo, Venture Bros S06, American Dad (any season), Astonishing X-Men (Whedon Digital Comic).

Attached: Thunderbolts 147-013.jpg (1988x3056, 1.09M)

Watch Fantastic Planet

More options:
>Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk: Motion Comic
>Iron Man Extremis (motion comic)
>Venom (2018)
>Raimi Spider-Man Trilgoy (2002-2007)
>Prince of Egypt
>Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011)

Watched it too many times along with The Adventures of Mark Twain.

You ever just see a set of panels or pages and start subvocalizing music over them? Because, I can hear the obnoxious fight scene rave music reading this and I love it.

Glad to have you here! my storytimes have been severely lacking but I will try to see Parker's run finished to the end.

I'm not sure if I should go by ProfessorBro anymore. My last teaching venture was last spring when I taught at community college and that was an absolute shitshow. In the meantime I've worked administration and adjusted the surveys used to evaluate professors. I have also served as numerous recommendations during this time and am currently working on assembling a set of lectures for incoming graduate teaching fellows. I feel like a professor even if not teaching if that makes sense.

Though, I guess it's more chase scene music, or at least in my head, thanks to Test Drive 5.

I discriminated hardcore when I taught community college. The class average was a 77 but not a single person in the class graduated with a "C". You either did exceptionally well or you failed. The class had a True/False final that if you passingly studied for you would have killed it but even that wasn't enough. All that said I was able to identify two students that I adored and contacted numerous other instructors about these students because they were the fucking real deal and deserved every ounce of assistance we could provide.

PrincipalBro or AdminBro just doesn't have the same ring

What subject was it?

Does the fact that the entire department uses lectures I made years ago as the de-facto prototypes for incoming lecturers to have soemthing to work with? I don't teach directly atm but I do make lectures for different departments when people get dropped due to illness (college kids be icky). Still mostly work in the office that does the Uni's evaluations and various other data projects they need work on.

I added a mountain of extra credit via two extra credit essays (that were mostly subjective and should have been fun to answer given the content). Community college is literally filled with both extremes of students and it caught me off guard.

As mentioned previously, there were some kids that fucking blew me away with their intelligence and critical thinking skills. I remember after one class they asked if I was agitated with them because of how they asked questions and I told them that I absolutely adored their feedback and would never ask them to stop. I remember some of the research questions required me to give some brutally honest answers and it shut his ass down for a good fifteen minutes. Definitely a top tier experience lol.

You know, I notice that Parker really likes suprising the reader with the ways character's act, but doing it in a way that's not OOC. I'd never expect Juggernaut to be a voice of de-escalation, for instance. But it makes sense because he puts it in a way that a hardened convict who's been in and out of prison dozens of times would put it.

It is so fascinating you mention that because I feel like his continued characterization in issue 150 and beyond really start to convey an underlying depth with the character that is by no means apparent up front. A lot of his character is only unveiled by him being somewhat vulnerable and that shit doesn't happen to often at all.

And then Crossbones tries to murder a guy in response to banter, because Crossbones. And, natural selection because the genius baited a freaking assassin.

You get they already have ghost in the MCU right?

The show is really good!

Almost but not quite. I feel they could slip this version of ghost in with minimal issues.

Well that is fucking awesome to hear. If this something I should watch while tripping or maybe a bit much and should keep it lighter? The Fly creeps me out and I would never consider watching it while tripping if that makes sense.

Yeah, but she's got all of fuck all to do with this Ghost. Though, putting her into the actual comics does pique my interest a bit.

If anyone ever asked me about a criminally underrated Big 2 run I’d have to point to Parker’s T-Bolts. Such a great run especially the issues with Kev Walker on art. They way the characters and environments are drawn give it all a cartoony but eerie vibe. Like Nightmare Before Christmas or something. I wish this team had been adapted as playable in a game of some kind at the time because Crossbones, Ghost, Jugs, Moonstone, Luke, and Man-Thing were a great squad.

I think it might freak you out if you're high watching. It goes pretty heavily into the cosmic and supernatural horror stuff and gets gorey. I think you'd enjoy it overall though. It's definitely the best thing DC's made for their streaming site.

I will definitely put it in the column of most certainly watch, just not while losing my mind on acid lol. I think I'll keep it PG with Incredibles and other related films like Megamind lol.

Awesome! Hope you enjoy it! And thanks for story timing this, OP! This is one of my favorite comic runs ever.

looking forward to that tiddy grab

Makes sense, given how many times he's been buried alive.

Thanks OP! man... I hope someday we have a T-Bolts team as good as this one, Marvel is wasting them as Punisher villains.

Thank you, ProfessorBro!

thx for t-bolt story time, op!

bump

Ah, Ghost you loveable freak.

>Let me tell you about the Thubderbolts.

Cute

I miss Troll...

>Can you make me intangible too?
>No.
Based Ghost

This was good. Thanks prof.

All I remember is they butchered Songbird's hair, and that is absolutely unforgivable.

Even after close to a decade, this run is still the tits.

He's not kidding. I remember Excalibur #1, where he was kept immobilized in Broadmoor prison, arms elevated, 24 hours a day. Plus, British food.

Jeff Parker really is great damn writer.

Personally, I LOVED Planetary. Must have read it half a dozen times. I'm even more intrigued by that concept now, since we could have a reboot with 1.1.2000 babies. Please, Ellis, plz.

I haven't really followed any Marvel series closely for a long-ass time, so forgive me. Isn't Mettle dead as fuck?

Oh yeah. Super dead.

man-thing, fuck yeah

There's even a giant-sized man-thing later on
