Jhonen says that the ship is practically her, but I think it's sorta diverging as its own character.

Almost makes me wonder if they could do an episode of her returning, more grudging than ever, while the ship has sorta softened up for the Membranes. Kinda good way to represent a character's inner conflict-duality thing, hmm. If they want to be edgy, they could end it with the ship killing her as an inferior and stagnating organic lifeform, or if they happened to feel cheery, make them reconcile and reunite on some sort of middle-ground (character development yet sustaining show asset for later use, blam!)

The designs in general changed a bit halfway through the first season. If I remember right Red or Purple were even given unique names until way later, just referred to as 'My Tallest' or just as the Tallest, so maybe the color change had to do with it.

This isn't stated anywhere as far as I'm aware, but logically the reason that they're co-rulers is because they're the same height exactly.
I think it was said that those two take steps to ensure that no one taller than them can appear to unseat them from the throne, which would mean that the Tallest is whoever is tallest at literally any time. There are no set term limits for ruling, like, the empire probably wouldn't wait for the current Tallest to die before replacing them with the new taller Irken.
If those two have been playing dirty after ascending to the top, I'd bet they cheated ahead of time too, working together. Otherwise, that's QUITE a coincidence that they'd be equal in height.

If they're assassinating anyone who might come close to their height, why haven't they killed each other? Although knowing this show they're probably doing both (trying to kill others and each other at the same time).

I'll be honest I was skeptical because the art style seemed to be... rounder? ... than the series' original style. But I have to say this was pretty awesome. I'm on the side of being disappointed with her in this special. Not because she's "nice" or cares about Dib, that's fine. There's validity to saying these versions are superior due to having more humanity and not being caricatures. But she's so weak compared to OG Gaz. The Gaz in the tv show could eliminate enemies with the flick of a wrist, and this Gaz shows none of that. Even her intimidating scene was pretty meh, visually.
I also thought her "big" moment of taking control of Tak's ship was underwhelming because all she did was shoot space rocks. That's so much less thrilling than if she were actually fighting other people.

His redesign is probably the best. The rules of character design show that square characters give off a vibe of reliableness and strength, qualities you'd want in a dad. I also like that his forehead isn't so tall now.
