Forgotten as usual
Is Oswald the Rabbit (and, subsequently, Mickey Mouse) a rip-off of Felix the Cat?
i do wonder who the first person to draw an animal in the black-body-white-face style was.
the UM&M TV Corp copyright date is MCMXXX but some comments seem to say this is from 1924: youtube.com
How you guys have a 1920s cartoon thread without mentioning Fleicher Studios? Come on let get civil now.
>1929
He stil in,baby!!
you posted 3 minutes after this fleischer one
Ever been to a silent film with a live band, like this?
youtube.com
(i did but it was like three guys with casio keyboards or some shit)
Don't forget about Julius the Cat and Bosko.
Not to confuse with Felix, wink wink
it's weird how soon in film history they mixed live action and animation. the alice comedies are from around 1925 aren't they?
They got pretty good in the 1930s with some of the Fleischer Screen Songs
never quite got to roger rabbit levels though
Krazy Kat 1913. The face is not canocally white (it's light beige in the color prints), but the comics were printed mostly printed in black and white, which created the style
The concept was fucking surreal for a classic american cartoon
>Ignatz hurls (the rat) aways throws brick at Krazy Kat, who misinterprets it as an expression of love. They both have a weird romantic relationship based around this
>The characters speak in a weird poetic made up language full of slang, like in Clockwork Orange
>The characters are not clearly referred to by sex pronouns, the character made a lot of weird explanations about Krazy being a magical creature that is both somehow
>be me
>watch one of those public domain DVDs with like 100 old cartoons
>Bosko cartoons are on it
>I think “oh so he’s like a monkey version of Mickey Mouse”
>notice he has no tail
>oh wait...
>google search Bosko
>mfw I learn the truth
>Ignatz hurls (the rat) aways throws brick at Krazy Kat, who misinterprets it as an expression of love. They both have a weird romantic relationship based around this
Sounds kinky
tell josé to stfu, cheese is srs bsns
it's weird how convincing this is.
wow. non-binaries in 1913 eh? crazy made-up language eh?
there used to be a collection of fake 1900s cartoons called the "Laugh-Out-Loud Cats" that was like "what if lolcats but old-timey?" I guess they needn't have bothered.
here's a film compilation that claims to be from the 1920s: youtube.com
looks like they had both gender-non-conformity, and whining conservatives who couldn't handle it
watch out y'all, the Hays Code comin'
fuck off tumblrite
It's not symbol language, but it is definitely an odd language— probably not as weird for 1913 but still an odd drawl.
Nope, they were just the style and humor that was common at the time
Now Julius the Cat, that was a Felix rip-off
>Remember seeing a video of Koko with him singing
>Remember him sounding like Puddles Pity Party
>I'm not even close
Why must my brain do this to me?
Kind of? But then again, Felix was basically an animated version of Charlie Chaplin
There was absolutely nothing racist about Bosko, the closest is the jungle short but he's never played as a stereotype
There was on YouTube a fully recorded live performance of the rare short "Felix The Cat Flirts With Fate". It seems that it occurred on this festival:

It has been gone for some time, if anyone what I'm talking about and has snatched that video please post it. The short was amazing, and the music performance as well.
Yes.
Hate when that happens
