There is no story to finish. Eric Truehart, the writer (who also wrote for the show) has said that there is no arc to Zim and thus no need to ever conclude anything. It's completely episodic and many issues end with the characters dying or being destroyed only for things to be reset at start of the next issue. It'd be like asking if Huckleberry Hound had a series finale that tied up loose ends and concluded the narrative.

The comic is still pretty good, though Trueheart has said in interviews that he will never bring back Tak and wants people to stop asking for her.

If the show was released now people would be complaining about how she gets away with treating Dib like shit and how the show portrays her as being smart while Zim and Dib act like crazy morons while calling Jhonen Vasquez an edgy soi boy cuck.

Gaz was mostly justified through out the series, Dib was the one who always did something bad or inconsiderate first.

I think the difference with WORDFILTERboy writers who make characters like Mabel and the people who made characters like Gas and Mandy is that the later recognize and clearly meant theirs to be unlikable as possible within the limits of being a kid show, because otherwise if they were adult cartoons, they would been Eric cartman clones.

Gaz’s character growth came out as organic enough with how the show starts. It’s been a while and she’s chilled a bit. Also, there is a limit to how insane a family member can get before you have to start worrying about them.

I think he means spoiled with validation from the show as a whole despite Dib being the most exceptional of the siblings. One casually hacks into Irken motherships and pilots entire planets to save the Earth and gets constantly shit on, the other tries to get him killed when he eats a slice of her pizza and gets nothing for it. I’m not complaining though, needless cruelty was a staple of how Invader Zim works.

I don't think he did anything for Florpus, so if IZ does get picked up for another season he might not have any say in Tak returning for the show.

Gaz is shown being capable of her own, as seen with controlling the Escape Pod, despite being Irken made. Even made Tak's ship fly during that Christmas special.

Prof Membrane did comment video games do help, though it may be because it is more scientific compared to Dib's paranormal investigations.

There were some episodes where Dib didn't really do anything wrong, but she blamed him for not getting what she wanted and threw one of her psychotic fits.

Like the Bloaty's Pizza Hog episode. Gaz wanted to eat pizza for family dinner, but Dib had to go save the world from Zim. Gaz was cool with leaving Did to die, but only saved him so that she could get her pizza. She was cool with letting her brother die or possibly the world get destroyed but only balked when she didn't get what she wanted. Or the Gameslave episode, she gets mad at Dib because he won't escort her to the mall until after he finishes watching his show, so she punishes him for it by trapping him in an inescapable parking lot maze. Somehow her getting a new game system was more important than him watching a TV show, so she threw a fit when she didn't get what she wanted.

The brattiness was just masked by her stoic, kewl, goth gamergirl façade, but she was still written as the spoiled little sister character that threw tantrums when denied the things she wanted.

Eric Trueheart sperged out about Tak when he got asked in an interview about her. I think he's refusing to use her more as a way to get even with fans who keep asking him about her.

You might need to rewatch that one. She wanted to leave Dib to die with Zim; her interest was in spending time with Membrane. She only collected Dib because she needed him to get time with Membrane. She never had any interest in spending time with Dib and would have preferred it if he'd died.

The joke about Gaz in the original series is that she isn't in some love/hate sibling rivalry with her brother. She genuinely at the core of her person HATES him and would be happier if he was dead. She's not a redeemable character or a nice character and she does not have some inner soft spot. She has no love for Dib. She wants him dead. THAT'S THE JOKE.

If you're having trouble with GIR in the first season, you're really gonna hate him in season 2. Early in the series, GIR could actually speak in conversational sentences with Zim and even sometimes question his plans (even when in blue mode). By season 2, he got flanderized into being nothing but a juke box for random non sequiturs.

So I guess The comic will get a linear story arc involving Tak

Trueheart is purposely pushing that arc back every time someone asks about Tak. More we ask, more it gets delayed in the comic.

That interview was from 2016 and the comic still hasn't used Tak or implemented any story arcs yet, so I doubt it.

Motherfucker, I never got into "subcultures" of any kind and I've never been inside a Hot Topic. I liked Zim because it was different, in a good way. But I also was never obsessed with it, I LIKED it, it was one of many things I liked. Some of the things I like are quite different from Zim. One can like different things.
Now I want a single person to make an actual argument for why you prefer the tone shift, beyond "times are different" and ad hominem. You don't have to be right or totally convincing, you just have to make a single intelligent point that doesn't require the caps lock key. Is that too hard?

The tone or atmosphere of a show is often tied to a person/ people who made that and even if it's the same guy he may have also changed with the times so it's very hard to get it back 100% after so many years.

This is why I prefer new stuff more than rebooting old stuff. Also a lot of the people in nu Yea Forums are autistic and either came from discord or Tumblr so having a real conversation with them is impossible.

What tone shift? Zim is still a complete maniac, Dib still wants attention, Gaz is still a jerk, and the Tallest are still dumbasses. The only "change" was professor membrane, and that was for the best because he was one of the weakest characters in the original show.
Gaz being less of a dick to Dib and going into adventures with him makes her a more fun character than what she originally was, which was just a Mandy rip off. And it´s not like she just stopped being a dick to Dib. She spends most of the movie angry at him, slapping him and insulting him.

At the surface level things are the same, but dynamics have changed, to the point the show itself is aware of it. Gaz's "you're still my brother" bit and the music stopping so Dib's dad could say "son, I'm always proud of you" are symptoms of the shift. I say "symptoms" because individually these part aren't a "problem," but they indicate a deeper change. The movie is watered down Zim--in comparison to the show, I don't read the comics.
It wasn't all bad, I agree. Dib and Gaz going on adventures was fun in its own way. But the filthy-world, slapstick bizarreness of the original is toned down in favor of touching moments and general loudness (that thing they kept doing where a character would yell & there'd be text on the screen, felt like it was trying to be old Zim and not succeeding). The part that most reminded me of old Zim was the pig hacking up an entire pizza, just the crudeness of that scene.

Was it ever very successful? I don't know, maybe not. This looks like a flashback to what the world was like 100 or 200 years prior to the series.

And that was what was fun about her character, but as time went on she got ever so slightly chiller, and despite all her rage, she still spent a lot of time hanging around Dib throughout the series even when she didn't have to. I liked the subtlety, her merely tolerating someone could be taken as a compliment.

Not saying the movie SHOULD have been like the show when it's purpose is likely to be a sort of final send-off - if the characters were ever to act human now was it's chance - but I'm just saying, I much prefer the show.

I genuinely enjoyed it. It was the only thing he ever made that I enjoyed, though technically he didn't really make it. I wish it would continue, but the way that guy updates comics, you might see an ending in the year 2059 if he actually kept at it.

Not really. The humor was in it her apathy and grumpiness being exaggerated to the point that she was cool with shit like her brother dying because fuck it, works for me.

Jhonen's mellowed the fuck out now that he's old and doesn't find the extreme characterization as funny anymore. And honestly, if I dealt with the obnoxious fucks he has I'd probably veer in the same direction.

Anyways, I would like to state that I hated how cartoonish and "perfect" Gaz turned into in the comics while it was stated that Dib was supposed to be better than her but just obsessive and weird. When she asked Dib to play video games with her, he won. When she wants to do anything with her father, he asks for Dib to join them. She's completely overshadowed by Dib throughout the comic but then the comic devolved into Dib being pathetic and lame half-way. It makes no sense and breaks the canon. Both Dib and Gaz are supposed to be somewhat superhuman in that they're more mentally fit than everyone else in their world but that idea was completely thrown out the window? It made sense that Gaz wasn't as good as Dib because she was younger. Why did she turn into a Mary Sue do-no-wrong in the later issues? And why is Dib so fucking pathetic? I can ask the same about why ZIM is such a failure and completely 180'd on world domination of Earth and just became some weird amalgamation of a sadist and a businessman (though I think the canon reason was that he got sick of the Tallest since he outright says that) but that's a whole different story.

She was actually the EXACT same personality she was before.

People forget that in the old show, Gaz actually had some of the most tender moments. She wasn't just a spooky, threatening goth gamer girl. She was also the girl who went to a space station to rescue her brother because she wanted to go to a restaurant with her dad. And the show made it clear that it wasn't just the retaurant, she wanted to spend time with her dad. Literally the only thing different in this version is she dresses less gothy.

Really the biggest change was Membrane, who, before, was almost never even around, physically.

Also, I'm watching it for the first time. Why is it animated like an anime? Like, the mouths have the worst animation I've ever seen, just like anime, while everything else is pretty okay.

My only big issue was that everything looked too clean and round. The original was more angular and greasy. I still got a few good laughs out of it and the voice cast sounded great so I'm happy
