It's too bad Netflix keeps claiming these shows of theirs as "anime" even though it's just another Tim Yoon cartoon. Basically it's the same as saying that anything with cool and attractive visuals is anime, while those satirical sitcoms with ugly character designs are American cartoons for adults.
At least this one is animated by a Japanese studio (then again, what cartoon wasn't outsourced to Japan back in the 80s?) unlike Castlevania which also was labeled as "anime" by Netflix. Because you know, if it looks cool it can't possibly be anything else than anime.

With Cannon Busters I can get behind the "it's anime" argument since it's a multinational project with a Japanese studio. But Castlevania has nothing like that going on, the only Japanese thing about it is the source material.
Of course it "looks anime" since people have just accepted the fact that if the characters don't look like Rick & Morty or The Simpsons characters then it's anime. Or if the cartoon is serious and has violent imaginery it's "anime" since all those imported anime series back in the 90s were like that.
Anime is not a brand. There are plenty of Japanese anime that doesn't "look like anime". American cartoons are evolving, yes they may take influence from anime but we shouldn't let another country take pride in that. Otherwise all we have left is Family Guy and Cartoon Network (also known as "CalArts").

Changing her hair texture was likely the result of careful consideration after years of this property being in development.

Anime characters by default are Japanese, since the shows usually take place in Japan. Since it's a simplistic cartoon, we tend to look at it like a mirror. Japanese people don't think they look the same how they're portrayed in American caricatures, but when anime does have a white character, it's usually portrayed like this: Of course the Japanese don't even have to think about these things since anime is made for them and they don't think about race as much as Americans are obsessed with it. Often a character might look different than what they actually look like. For example when you read some light novel (I don't remember which one it was), a girl character may be pictured as "black haired beauty", but when you look at the cover illustration you see she has red hair. This is because the illustration tells the reader instantly what type of character she is: a hot-blooded female warrior. In anime it's more important to bring out character's personality and "type" rather than race. For example, South Park characters literally have the same face, but in the Japanese art they have certain unique features like pic related. It's because that's how they see their "types". A character's personality features are more important than racial features.

Having a minority character may be the result of pandering to a minority audience, or it may not, but intent does not dictate whether or not it is representation.

So I'm three episodes in and this show so far strikes me as very shallow and half-assed. The music never feels appropriate to the visuals (and it seems the editors know that because they frequently mix it way way down), the exposition is clumsy as fuck, and it feels like the show thinks I should care about SAM and Philly but they're just so fucking uninteresting.
Also I kinda had to laugh at the end of episode 3. The main villain girl tells the demon king that SAM will lead them to Kelby, then he orders her to assassinate the guy getting them there. In which case they can't lead them to Kelby.These are not smart villains.
I'll have to be pretty bored to give it past the 3 episode try but this season is fucking empty anyway so I probably will

I don't doubt Shankar loves Berserk, but love isn't going to cut it. Anime adaptions anymore are just lucks of the draw of who isn't getting overworked and who the director knows. It's literally the reason why OPM season 1 is so fucking adored and why Season 2 is just dog shit. And I'm pretty sure Shankar doesn't have the ear of every freelance animator like Shingo Natsume. As it pains me to say, CG in Berserk is just an inescapable inevitability so if i had to pick, I would prefer Ufotable have a crack it. Considering all the massive scale battles that occur in the series. Maybe Kyoani just to see them throw a curve ball.

The show is janky and amateurish. It’s a miracle I’ve almost watched the whole thing. The English acting/script and the writing starts off being really shitty. The Japanese acting and dialogue is fine, but it doesn’t change the fact that the show’s plot is horrible. The English dub and the show’s overall plot improves slightly over time, but only just barely, and not enough to make Cannonbusters good.
Casey and Sam are grating in how nice they are, Philly has the opposite problem of being an incompetent asshole. The only halfway good character was Jojo, and he only showed up once.

I started with the Japanese version first. The dialog and acting was so bland. Switching to the Dubs at least occasionally gave me a chuckle on at least two line deliveries.
I learned to like Casey more after "the Casey episode" but S.A.M. I started to like less the more inexplicably busted she became.
The final episode has nice action scene. Action scenes the series needed to have all throughout instead of whatever the hell Episode 9 was.

I thought the show would be bloody but fun but all I found was super flashy action scenes, many needless deaths and blood, overpowered villains who are evil just for the sake of being evil and so many small payoffs.
I like Philly as a character but I just HATE how "weak" he is.
S.A.M. is TOO naive and is either super passive or a inconvenient nuisance and her CB mode is just a deus ex machina ALL the time because Philly just can't.
Raging Bully Bessie is a true disappointment because it so underutilized. It did very little and when it did, when it was it's time to shine, it gets offed so anti-climatically.
Casey is like the only one I like because not only is she charming, she actually does beneficial stuff unlike S.A.M.
The adventure wasn't as fun as I thought it would be and the constant needless deaths just felt unnecessary, it kind of put me off with its world; not interesting in the slightest.
And I was SO interested in the show in it's development to.
The opening song "Showdown" is too good though, so that's a plus.
To me this show felt a lot like what Americans think anime is, but the result is extremely shallow. It's too bad because you get an opportunity to make "American anime" but you just try to copy elements from already existing anime series instead creating something fresh and different.
It wasn't awful but there's so many anime series you could watch instead and they have better structure.
I think Boondocks and Avatar did it good enough, with the former having the style being more of an aesthetic and understanding it's a western show.

I already cared about the Freemans' and was invested in their story back before they were drawn well. Shit, I'm still mad Caesar was left out of the show because of how that affected Huey's character dynamic not because he transformed into a giant robot.

Weird that it wasn't restrictions like S&P that made it falter the most, but budget. And you can see it in that last part with, obviously, the animation quality, but also the gags and what characters were doing. Like Philly punching Big Tits McHugeAss? The way a pretty face character like her is allowed to emote taking that punch into an ugly grimace? That's Lesean's humor peaking through and you can tell that's what he wanted for the whole thing

On the one hand, it could get more money like Boondocks did and look gorgeous with each season. On the other hand, Boondocks writing got worse, the better it looked.
Ultimately, I'm still hopeful, but I don't think it will do Boondocks numbers because it doesn't have white people creaming themselves over it, telling Adult Swim to make more. And maybe that's a good thing?

More than you'd think. Apparently his deal is he's actually a pretty shit fighter and his victories are more the result of people not knowing he can resurrect so he gets the drop on them. However anyone with half a brain could figure out how to deal with him, like dump his corpse in concrete and let him resurrect as many times as he wants in that. One situation he gets into involves a magical fucker who devours souls so all his resurrection presents is an endless meal ticket. He's also become trapped in a giant plant that devoured him once using chemicals to pacify him. Both times he required rescue by other people.

My biggest problem with cannon busters just like everyone else is the poor writing. As the episodes continued I lost more interest and the last episode made me not care for the prince, philly, or anyone else at all. The main villain literally is one big plot device, and all the characters save the two robots and the head of the royal guard suck.
I really want to give this a chance, but philly is such a terrible main character it’s irritating. The prince is a spoiled brat who doesn’t even consider SAM anything but his toy. Nothing made me really care about this series.

I actually really enjoyed the Odin/Prince subplot more than the rest of the series. It was clear, focused and straightforward and actually gave a stable entry point for understanding the complexity of the (very simple) political landscape of that world.

I'm not asking for a specific style of song, I'm asking for the visuals and music to be cohesive. The intro looks like it was animated well before the music was even written, or was animated to a different song entirely.

Yeah, that was really fucking lame and impactless, there was no change in the backing music to indicate a change in tempo (because there was no change in tempo to match the change in visuals, because they were either done separately or incompetently)
That kind of lazy, laid back style of music doesn't fit the pace of the animation at all. It's probably the most egregious technical problem in the entire show.

Just watch this shit. There are so many visual strikes and flourishes with no accompaniment, it's so fucking awkward. Even just the first few seconds are so goddamned empty they'd be better off chucking in sound effects than leaving it at the one low rhythm.
Then the music changes to a new section, but the visuals are halfway through the character montage when that happens - it's out of sync. Then the PRESS START screen occurs and the mech sequence starts and instead of shifting the music right away it waits until halfway through THAT and does a weak, jazzy, powerless horn line. One that, just for good measure, doesn't line up with the title card flair.
The next section is much better, but the decision to keep the instruments muted and both instruments and vocals super laid back and staccato once again clash with the energy of the animation. Simply elongating the vowels would fix this section.
Then the animation kicks into full gear combat mode, and again there's no change in tempo to match the animation. It just sticks with this low key funk that has no energy at all while animu characters are flipping around and shooting beams and exploding shit.
Then the ending bridge is rushedly slammed in, again at the wrong spot (it should be at the transition to the car on the highway, not a random couple of seconds before), and the smash cuts to each character again don't match the tempo of the song.
Now look at the OP for Cowboy Bebop, a show superficially very similar to Cannon Busters and with a musical style rooted in the same jazz and funk that informed CB's intro.

Given that, I was actually disappointed by the animation in the first episode. Does it get more impressive later on or is the first episode indicative of the whole production?
The first episode strangely has dips that later episodes don't (although I'm only at ep 7), or at least not as noticeably.
I'm really not one of those guys that throws an autistic fit when western animation emulates anime. I mean hell, the cross pollination between American and Japanese animation throughout the 20th century is widely known. Crib stuff you think is cool. And Japan will do the same in turn, which is what's happening with superhero stuff like MHA and OPM.
But when this show has an OP, a title card, eyecatches, an ED, etc etc, it's trying so hard to be a Real Anime it just comes off as a cheap knockoff of the real thing.
They can trot out the animation studio all they like (as if that means something when most American cartoons are outsourced to Asia anyway), this shit ain't anime.

Googling this show, I found out it's based on an ill-fated comic book LeSean Thomas published in the early 2000's, and it's very, very obvious that it comes from that timeframe, when superficially aping anime and manga was the cool thing to do. I disagree in some things, the designs are ok, even good (excep for Main character which is awful).
But drawing is bad, the proportions of the car changes each episode for example. The animation in fights specially more than good or bad is just inexistent, like they just show the character aimaing a gun and then the bad guys on the floor.
SADISM AND CANIBALISM is fine due to the setting.
Lot of the scenes, specially towards the end are a complete mess, like the sequence of actions is absurd, like they enter on a building, they fall through the floor underground and they are appear in a casino that just some minutes ago in the episode was on ground level, they cross a door and are suddenly in a whole different building.
Or characters fall throm the celling withouht really explaining how. Or a flying ship is on the run but instead of flying away its like flying in circles on the same position while the action goes on.
For the most part, the series were mediocre, not terrible nor good, but the last episodes are really awful.
