The IDEAS behind the show's plot, worlds, and characters have potential. The show itsself turned to be straight hot diarrhea. It sucks until episode 25 and then it sucks like a season after that until the end. Probably the only stand out moments for me are Lapis dragging Jasper into the sea and the final episode with White pulling the gem out of Steven. Then White becomes "FAMILY!" and forgiven for killing millions and the show becomes bullshit again.

There's so few good moments in this show and so so so many problems andit's heartbreaking as someone who was excited by this show's pilot. Had LOTS of potential and it was squandred to pander to tumblr and by having shitty direction and no basic animation direction like fucking height charts and consistency.

Plus Rebecca went from being a pretty, normal looking woman while on AT to literally looking like the ugliest femme man alive with that god awful haircut and glasses style, all to pander to tumblr.

I hate everything about SU, most of all how much it got me excited for something cool and unique and then shit all over expectations.

I dropped Steven Universe after like 8~ episodes or whatever it was, because I just couldn't sense any real personality from any of its main cast.
Like I was unironically intrigued by the show's setting. The world, its lore, its magic and fantastical elements and so on.
But the characters all felt so unusually flat to me that I was just taken aback. It almost felt to me as if every character already flanderized version of themselves, since the very start of the show even though that shouldn't make much sense.

That's when I dropped it. I just couldn't help but feel like the show was worthwhile when none of what the characters did or responded, felt interesting to me.
Before dropping the show I remember asking myself the question, with how flat and shallow these characters feel, will I even care about them even if they do eventually grow? As they are they're already too boring.

In before how I am just not the target audience. And sure granted, but it doesn't change how I enjoy practically every cartoon out there and yet this one just felt lacking.

The writers should have made it Steven's goal to face the challenge and find a way to beat them, give the diamonds a kryptonite, or use his Pink Steven deus ex machina to destroy them, or have him get more homeworld gems to help fight against them, anything would be better than the most unrealistic and underwhelming resolution they went with. Conflict is not a bad thing, characters overcoming impossible odds is not a bad thing, conveniently making redeeming the diamonds the only option to curing the corrupted gems at the last minute and also giving Steven an easy way to accomplish this by making him into Pink Diamond so that they instantly love him and he never has to lose anything or diverge from his pacifism and talk no jutsu is lazy writing.

By painting Steven as a defender of the world from very real threats, and then having his solution be "He asks the bad guy really nicely", it creates sort of a strain. "Would this actually work in my circumstances?", someone might ask, and the answer is unfortunately probably no.

Steven calls the leaders of Homeworld awful when he's being taken there to answer for Rose Quartz's crimes. He says this based on everything he's seen them do: shattering gems who don't conform, like fusions, forcing gems into rigid repressive social and political roles, imprisoning gems in objects, creating bio weapons that destroy planets out of horrifically force-fused shattered gems, sapping planets of all ability to support organic life. And as he gets to know them more, none of that changes except that he learns that they're SAD about losing their family member. He in fact learns that they do even more fucked up things, like making gems into walls and combs, and that they mistreated Pink Diamond as well. He admits they're dictators explicitly, but also says "They're not enemies, they're family!". He's too much of a sap for a sob story to recognize people who are clearly in the wrong like he used to be able to, and the show ends with a twisted message of reconciliation with tyrants and that you can convince them to make up for their bad actions just by appealing to their better nature or convincing them that they're also a victim of their hierarchy, or even just asserting your identity and then making fun of them for being babies. The Nazis weren't defeated by working things out, or strong language, or playground banter. They were stopped with bombs and bullets, because any time wasted trying to entreat on them to "Change their minds" more innocents suffered. Steven's too much of a wuss to sell the show's own ideas of rebellion against intolerance in support of freedom, and trades it in for a mushy "Everyone gets along" ending.

While I agree with you assessment of Steven Universe, I think that the comparison between Steven and Tylor is a bit off. Steven's pacifism is something he tries to actively work towards and consciously applies when confronted with a problem.

Tylor, by contrast, doesn't want to fight because it's a hassle for him. Similarly, whether he kills or not, and he does kill quite a few people, is almost always incidental.

I will agree that both their enemies are warmongers who were willing to drag their people into genocidal war purely for their own self interest and Steven and Tylor are the big monkey wrench in their plans. Even so, Tylor's game of chicken with Captain Dom using the entire UPSF and Raalgon navies was a brilliant example of building tension for a satisfying anti-climax.

A big part of why the show is one of my favorite anime series is because it's almost impossible to decipher whether Tylor is an idiot with the devil's luck or a genius manipulating everyone into thinking he's an idiot and for that reason the audience can believe that he will realistically get the outcome he wants regardless of whether it ends with killing or not. As for my two cents on the debate, Tylor does have a few genuine moments of introspection that hint he's got something bigger going on in his head.
