You guys remember the Amalgam Universe? Secret Warps reminded me that this happened years back, and kind of surprising that it did at all. Was it fun during it's brief two year stunt, or did you just find the entire thing stupid?
I never read them but as a kid looking at the ads in Wizard magazine I thought Dark Claw looked badass.
Levi Wood
Fun gimmick, but a real product of its time. It'd be interesting to see a modern Amalgam, but these days, DC will crossover with anyone but Marvel and Marvel is too busy being in sync with the movies to try anything fun or outgoing.
Grayson Wright
But that's my point, the big two would never do something like this nowadays. It's somehow has gotten even more competitive and petty
Ian Clark
It was fun. Some were better than others. Speed Demon, and Magneto and The Magnetic Men were my favourites. Some fusions were lazy like Aquamariner.
The fake letter were great too. I love how some are interesting combos (Speed Demon) and some are just stupid (Kingpin/Riddler became "The Big Question).
Bentley Harris
>you were expecting an amalgam of stephen strange and kent nelson but it was i, charles xavier!
read about it online. sounded pretty cool. If for no other reason than the clever ways characters were combined, particularly their names.
Xavier Jones
I really liked them. We got to see a lot of things fans were constantly talking about or wondering about. They felt like pure, unadulterated fan service.
Cameron Hall
I am the elseworld storytimer, want me to storytime amalgam comics?
I will say this, if they ever update this today, they can do better then Mandarinestro. What they should have done is combine Mandarin and Kanjar Ro, from his early Gamma Ging stuff, mixed in the the Ten Rings, and mix Sinestro and Iron Monger, ya got Fear Monger
Not to further push for more Earth Lanterns but they COULD maybe do a character who channels Lantern energy through a suit of armor. Like a cheap knockoff device that's far less sophisticated than a power ring, but still gets fueled by the emotional spectrum. Oh wait, they technically did do something similar (without actual emotional energy) with the China Lanterns.
>Tony, Loki and Natasha are still alive >Spider-Man is an adult >Drax is a human again ≥Hulk is bouncing around several personalities with the main one gunning to cull the majority of Earth's population >Captain Marvel is half Kree >Most Skrulls are evil >Rhodey is too traumatized to be War Machine >Thor is currently king of Asgard >Scarlett Witch is still pretty much irrelevant >Just like the movies
If you're going to complain, at least make your gripes relevant. Marvel synergy died down months ago. The only thing I can think of that that still smacks of it is that upcoming Spiderverse book. And even that's going to focus on the comic book versions of the characters.
I remember I always wanted to do a superhero rpg for a group, based on Amalgam, but never got around to it. I just made a huge list of all the characters I made up for the universe, and tried to improve on em. So fuck it, what were your guy's ideas for Amalgams?
Hellgrammite+Abomination=Damnation Bane+Juggernaut=Dreadnaut Jason Todd+Cyclops=Red Visor Cassandra Cain+X-23=C-23 Damien+Daken=Damen Justin Hammer+Weaponers Of Qward=Hammers of Qward Blue Beetle+Venom=Stinger M.O.D.O.K.+O.M.A.C.=Something I don't want to even attempt right now The Watcher+The Phantom Stranger=The Phantom Watcher Luke Cage+Booster Gold=Power Boost Iron Fist+Blue Beetle=Iron Beetle
Caleb Sullivan
Internet/power went out cause fucking kids hit a transformer with fireworks
My only issue is that most of the mixes are based on the JLA with the X-Men and I'd prefer the Avengers
Ryder Peterson
amazing how much less interested i am because of this art style
last comic was surprisingly good, thanks for posting
Jason Jenkins
I loved it as a kid, and honestly from a marketing standpoint it worked on me, they got me into the DC side of cape comics. Can't really comment on its quality as I haven't read it since then.
that makes no sense does it? One is a mercenary who's the best at killing. The other is utistically supposed to never kill, even if the whole universe were at stake
Kevin Sanchez
popularity dictated a lot of these fusions it seems. honestly i think if they were to somehow try again, they could do much better with much more obvious amalgams
Charles Cooper
It's also possible they thought of the Hyena (Joker+Sabretooth) character, which works better first.
Simplest way to have a crossover would be for Marvel to bring back the Nth projector and tie it into DC's Nth metal. So you could either have a big company-wide crossover immediately or have a bridged element for later crossovers. Remember the two Howards situation between Savage Dragon and Spider-Man? They could also go with that approach and have a small crossover in-mention.
Hell, DC loves meta commentary nowadays so they could introduce some cosmic force that represents copyright law and lawyers to explain why the two multiverses run parallel.
Ethan Garcia
I love the naming conventions. It's like if Star Wars and DBZ ever cross-promoted, you'd have Gohan Solo and the Death Star Dragon Ball
Caleb Lopez
I hate any kind of DC / Marvel mixing. I know it's all fiction and making comics DC only or Marvel only is an arbitrary limitation, but I just can't get into a story when it's crossover shit. Makes me focus on how it's a crossover and lose the normal immersion I would get from a regular non-crossover comic. I don't think it's just my own hangup at fault though, it also seems like these crossovers tend not to be written as seriously as regular stories because the writers know they're very temporary gimmicks.
Jaxon Howard
I thought it was stupid because I thought most characters looked stupid. Spider-boy... What where they fucking thinking? The coolest thing about Spider-Man is the mask. Dark Claw was the first time I ever saw something and said "edgy tryhard" and super soldier just looked so fucking dumb with his hair popping out.
Leo Johnson
I combined Beta Ray Bill with Martian Mangunter, got yourself Omega Ray Manhunter Name some more DC guys, and I'll see if I can remember who I combined with whom
They're too similar. It ends up being one character wearing the other's clothing. It's like combining Black Cat and Catwoman, you'd just get another cat themed cat burglar out of it. These kinds of fusions are best when you cross with something different, to get something more novel.
I agree with you overall, but I don’t think Aquamariner was just one character wearing the others clothing. He might have been overly different but the differences were thereZ
Whats the legality on these now? Who owns them? I know that JLA/Avengers was still canon to DC for a little while, and that trinity book was a sequel of sorts dealing with the fall out of krona, but I don't think this ever made it into canon
Is the guy who can read Lantern’s thoughts an amalgam?
Michael King
I was a kid when this came out and was so hyped for this shit, but the more I read the more I realized that none of the stories would really have any impact because, of course, neither company's properties could be damaged or altered in any significant way. Kind of lame.
Man, these artists. Parts of the drawings are so great; energetic composition, nice line work, all that stuff. But you can tell some of these guys haven't bothered to learn any sort of anatomy or anything like that. Like, the joker guy is facing turning one way but his abs are facing straight towards the reader, what the hell, Jim Balent.
Jeremiah Ross
fuck yes
Angel Morales
Myx the 5th dimensional superman imp?!
Xavier Gomez
You don't know what their direction was. A lot of things go into art.
Juan Cruz
I combined Catwoman and Callisto of the Morlocks together to get Calico
Charles Mitchell
>Norman
I thought he was supposed to be Harry/Harvey?
Luis Martinez
So it was a mix of OA, Ego, and Mogo. I wouldn’t have expected OA to be in there
Easton Phillips
>Hot female Guy Why is this a recurring motif ?
Connor Peterson
I love "keep your atmosphere on" instead of "keep your pants on".
