I honestly don't remember much of Zim other than hating it 100% because of Hot Topic types latching on to it

Mostly girls. The show during it's prime, rarely had guy shirts. During the haitus Hot topic started dumping anything they could attach Gir to.

I remember loving how freaky shit were and how it could have a lot of energy. And that GIR was adorable.

I grew up with it as a kid and rewatched it a few times as an adult so I’ll give you my opinion on it. The biggest thing I can say is that the “random” humor doesn’t show up nearly as much as Yea Forums thinks it does. It is there and unfortunately it’s most of what GIR does but there are many other jokes besides that. The first 15 (ish) episodes have a very distinct feel to them that is right on the edge of intentionally disturbing and are overall very good. Episodes after that range from mediocre to good but lose the bite that the earlier episodes had that they made it considered the “darkest nick cartoon” ten years ago.

I would say watch it but if you hate shipping or fanwank avoid discussion of it. Even though the shipper’s in IZ Yea Forums threads are fairly sane in compared to what it was in past, the autism gets a little much for me at times so I only venture into these threads every so often.

This picture made me remember that Zim and Gaz barely interacted, if at all.

I watched it a bit when it was on TV but never got to watch much (I think it had a shit time slot?) and thought it was pretty funny/unique.

It definitely got a hot-topic crowd later but I find it easy to ignore the shit fanbase of something I like. I also think the "lolrandom" humor of the show is exaggerated quite a bit, it definitely has some but most of the jokes are just pretty good.

I always ignored the Hot Topic stuff, but I've always heard about it.

I still find the show very funny even as a grown man. It has very unique, grim and spontaneous nature to it.

Kinda same. Been rewatching it lately. Expected to be offput by the lolrandumbness, but it's really well executed. It's more few of the action scenes that kinda feel mundane. The pacing and tone is mostly just superb.

I rewatched Zim recently and was amazed by how grim it was. Like I don't even mean the obvious stuff like the organ harvesting episode, I mean just the general day to day stuff is grim as fuck. The backgrounds are all drab colours, everything looks dirty and gross and human culture is always shown at its most disgusting side.

honestly I could see it being true, IZ appears to have had a lot of fuckups when it was being produced and I could see that one being a big enough one that it ended up being a big factor in the show getting canned, it being less about the budget and more that Nick was just wary of how many issues it was causing in such a short period of time(after all they had similar issues back in the 90's with Ren & Stimpy)

Eh I prefer my take on the idea, even if it is technically less accurate to the source material, partly because I've found over the years that very few fans are able to properly emulate the darker aspects of the show's tone well, usually going overboard in the process, which is probably why your stuff(and that of a couple of the other regulars in these threads like Gooeyblob) works so well, you guys mostly focus on the lighter aspects of the show which is much easier to emulate well

According to Jhonen, the actual production process was a nightmare and really wore him out. I'm sure a lot of that was Nick's fault.
