Eh, movie is still pretty meh. Just focused on Helga and Arnold too much.

I feel like Rocko spent too much time focusing on him and Bighead, the other characters even Filburt and Heffer disappeared for significant swaths of the movie and when they did show up they usually only reacted to stimuli brought by Rocko or Bighead.

Jungle Movie did a better job at spreading the wealth so to speak, most of the characters got enough screen time to do them justice. Obviously, Arnold and Helga are going to get more than most, but they did not completely smother the thing. It provided a sense of closure and was not too preachy. Unfortunately, because it played "safe", it did not get all the controversy and attention that Static Shock did making it a ratings flop.

Honestly I didn’t much like it. If I could change anything it’d be:

It would fit he atmosphere of the show much better

The best parts of HA were when it touched on sadder, more mature topics. If you have to include his parents, make the plot about him coming to terms with the fact they are 100% actually dead, not waiting for him to rescue them
>Don’t add some gigantic threat or menace or active villian
Maybe instead it could be about Arnold growing up past his parent’s deaths, or Helga being forced into confronting her personal issues, or Arnold having to watch as his friend group slowly drifts away over the years. Something more grounded, closer to home than a fantasy/adventure plot.

There's a scene in Swamp Thing where two women kiss, instead of just letting it happen and be a thing the character has to stop and look at the camera and go "what? you've never seen two girls in love". That's forced diversity, talking down to your audience and treating gays like they're special. What they should have done is kissed good bye and the scene move on like it was the normal thing it is.

Yes, but the rest of the movie outside of that was good and well worth it.

I don't know. I thought there was a certain beauty to giving a happy ending to Arnold, given how much of a giving character he was in the show. Arnold seemed to work so much towards the happiness of others, it only made sense then that the other characters would be on his side (if after some needed encouragement from Helga later on) and help him figure out the one thing that's plagued him for years. What made it all really work is that Arnold very much had to work for it, which includes his trusting nature being taken advantage of, and getting past that. If Arnold and co went on this huge adventure only to find out his parents are dead, I think it would just be a "depressing for the sake of it" kind of thing, and it wouldn't be fitting for the show's message of remaining positive despite low situations. Who better than to get a win than Arnold, even if realistically the chances are low (and besides, ultimately it is a cartoon even if the focus was on realism during its main run - I think it's fair to say they "earned" one unrealistic thing besides Pigeon Man). Mainly, I think the fakeout at the end was effective, even poignant, and was really all we needed to see what the reality could have been.

Honestly, If you want depressioncore, just go watch Bojack Horseman. Either that or the Patakis, if that ever came out.

Agreed. I was actually expecting them to reveal that the parents had died as they seemed to be going in that direction, and I was ok with it, but you’re right- once it was revealed that that wasn’t the case I was relieved. Arnold definitely deserved a happy ending more than any other character I can think of.
