The thing about Mutants, and the problem a lot of the comics had, was they have to be *everywhere*, or the concept falls flat. So you have to think about how it's going to play out in unrelated movies.

Think about, like, Spider-man 3. Let's introduce a background mutant. How would that play out?

X-men isn't just about gays it's about outcasts who are hated by society for something they were born with and you can apply all sorts of metaphors to that, not just gays.

That said X-Men were at their peak in the 80's and early 90's, and I always liked how the comic had a retro futuristic 80's feels to it. Like the X-Men Arcade game was set in the 00's. But honestly maybe Fox did have a good idea when they made the X-Men movies take place in different periods of time. It's why they really work better when they are in their own universe instead of sharing it with the other Marvel heroes.

MCU Spider-Man strikes me as something that could be improved by NOT being so tied to the rest of the MCU and be allowed to develop its own stories/lore. Even though I loved Mysterio in Far From Home, the movies always feel like some afterthought to the rest of the MCU.

I recall the 90s cartoon, which ended up doing the same by introducing more and more Marvel characters in a crossover after another that smelled of attempts at building up an animated universe like the DCAU. But even then, those crossovers happened late into the show, after Spider-Man and his cast were already established. Compare that to Far From Home, which has Spider-Man disclosing his identity to the world... what, two years into his superhero career?
