the only one ITT where the final looks better than the pilot
Its amazing how the very first concept art was good and the designs went only downhill from there.
First episode Brock looks so badass
venture bros is the only one I can think of that gets more detailed and complex over time and not minimalized out the arse
Holy shit proto enid is unf
I remember an old issue of Nick Magazine had some even earlier concept art for this show. Daggit was originally buff as shit. Norbert looked more or less like he does on the left, though.
Pilot Zim reminds me of Kermit
I can't stand sausage noses so I'd disagree. They're my least favorite design in cartoons/anime
Yeesh, Pilot Tulip looks so bad.
Nah I like final Rad and KO more than that one. That enid make my dick hard though
But she has Elephant Legs
she can use them to constrain me while she chokes me to death with her fat ass. I'm game for it.
The worst
Where can I see the pilot, I know the Rocket power One is looked in some museum.
I find these pilots look better then the shows. I think it might be the shading or sharper angles. Steven universe especially, even though I never watched the show so take my opinion with some salt.
Rocko was bright yellow in the pilot, but otherwise changed very little.
I kinda dig garnet's parliament-esque design in the pilot, but amethyst managed to look even dumpier and pearl's pilot design is just awful.
That's because they were given an actual budget and not outsourced to korea.
Comparing it to a movie version isn't really fair. the TV show was definitely a step back in quality from the films.
I really liked the vibrant 80s aesthetic that the setting had, but I'm too used to the current character designs.
Jesus fucking christ...Klasky/Csupo really beefed it on that one.
The pilot actually had incredibly animation, so it's more accurate to compare it to the movie in terms of quality. I have no idea how to make webm's because I'm an idiot, but there are shots where they make the camera do these crazy swings and animate it all by hand. The pilot's animation is basically on-par with the intro.
Dipper got better, Mabel got worse
the look, older in the pilot
It looks better as a finished product I guess, but it’s still so ugly to look at.
God, the pilot looks like one of those, "Recreate CG in five minutes" pictures.
I dunno, I kinda prefer Dipper's hair in the pilot. Makes him look more adventurous compared to his final design.
The SU Pilot style is superior. It has a nice 90s aesthetic that was completely lost when it got picked up.
It's crazy how apparent Peter Chung's animation style is in the Rugrats pilot, with shots like that looking straight out of Aeon Flux
It also would've probably crippled the animators to draw models that detailed on a regularly basis. I've always found Rebecca's style a tad grotesque so I'm biased but I much prefer the final aesthetic they went with. Might not be as detailed but it's just easier to look at.
Only is this case the pilot probably took like 5 months to make.
Johnny Quasar was from 1995 I believe and was like a 10 second animation
Jimmy Netruon did get a pilot in 1998 though
It's the videogame characters they play as in the episode Planet X, not an early design.
>When they mentioned that the brown things on the back of their heads are their fucking ears
I’m honest surprised that they managed to make both Hank and Dean fuckable
Wow, I honestly would've drawn Fashion Nova Thot incest with that original Mabel design. The only big difference is her skin, but that's enough to imagine her sucking Dipper's cock during frequent beach vacations.
Margaret was actually naked like Mordecai in the original idea, but they cover her because female characters are always wearing something
How would this work of they didn't care?,who knows
What always got me about the GF pilot is that it has the exact same premise as the first real episode, with the notable absence of any mention of the journals or bill symbolism.
The show was always meant to be about wacky episodic sibling adventures, and not about any overarching mystery. That stuff was only an afterthought.
>The show was always meant to be about wacky episodic sibling adventures, and not about any overarching mystery. That stuff was only an afterthought.
And the last horse crosses the finish line...
Yeah, it isn't fair...to the movie. The Rugrats pilot is by far the best animation the franchise ever had.
Pilots have more soul

Biggest trend I notice is that modern shows tend to have looked better as pilots, but classic shows looked better in their final products.
Weird.
>It also would've probably crippled the animators to draw models that detailed on a regularly basis
Please, it cripples them to stay on model and in-scale in the actual show
This is the actual pilot. I also remember one with a proto-Carl that isn't this one. His shirt is different, but mostly it's just that the facial animations look like old Gmod shit.
As Told By Ginger
This was made in the 90s. Weird that Phineas and Ferb existed as a concept for so long before the show was made.
Whoops, wrong one.
God Mabel was a cunt
Ugliest show on TV
Really triggers me how the perspective of the series dress is always fucking off
>Really triggers me how the perspective of the series dress is always fucking off
not the fact that they completely butchered the overall story, artstyle and effort put into it?
I heard a lot about how great it was going to be when the pilot/first episode dropped, and then... nothing. It's a shame.
basically
>pilot/first episode drops, is good and looks fun
>more episodes come out, artstyle is changed to that pic because it's easier to draw, quality drops
>huge hiatus, like a year+
>episode is random shenanigans, quality drops further, MC is put in a raincoat the whole ep so they don't have to animate her limbs as much, main plot is completely ignored
>series is moved to a paywall site no one uses
>next episodes are not ever funny shenanigans, it's basically a SOL between her and that white haired negro tumblr OC love interest, there's still several months to years between each episode
>last 5 minutes of last episode introduce another major plot point, series dies
I think one of Dipper's biggest personality traits is that he's a brainy, nerdy straight man character. The final design fits that better than the pilot
I feel so sorry for the people who backed it on Kickstarter.
You know Ian, he likes his cameos and references, the characers in the videogame are actually the very first design for the main characters before they changed them for the pilot.
Oh GOD somehow they where more hideous in the pilot.
They put all of the episodes up on youtube.
Zuko was a chad in the pilot, he killed a fucking sea serpent on his own.
pilot Mabel is hotter
You forgot the part where they announced a new continuation with twice the artsy bullshit.
proto-katara was cuter
this was was pain
most would disagree
>Biggest trend I notice is that modern shows tend to have looked better as pilots, but classic shows looked better in their final products
Maybe it's an industry shift? Maybe classic shows got better funding after being greenlit while modern shows have the opposite problem
>final product makes everything more anime
>it actually looks less attractive
fucking nips ruin everything
The mom's pose and face gives me GoAnimate flashbacks
The artstyle is definitely getting over used now a days.
Here's a more direct comparison
>the same studio and the same people draw teh same shit
WOOOOW ARE YOU A GENIUS OR SOMETHING
I didn't like the change at first, but the new artstyle makes Tulip more expressive.
thank god they took out that lanky fuck
People involved in pilots pour their hearts into them to try and get picked up. After getting picked up, everything has to be streamlined for the sake of bottom dollar, almost inevitably resulting in a severe loss of charm and soul.
>Zim with Kermit's voice
Even Hanna Barbera with their recycled shit had more variety in artstyles.
>not being able to vary your artstyle
They're not people, they're robots
That is some straight-up Junji Ito shit right there.
DIPPER'S

This is why I tell people to be thankful for the Klasky-Csupo final art (it truly could have been MUCH worse).

top is a fan-made widescreen remaster of the pilot
bottom is a piss-poor encoded rip of Season 9b where certain colors are off-balance (yellows are pumped up, reds are dulled down or given a purple tint), pixels are noticeable, and audio is fucked
God the old design looks like a goblina with owl eyes
Free me from this fucking agony. This plus making puppycat into a walking Garfield mascot instead of a little animal made this series borderline unenjoyable for me. I'd crowdfund them reanimating the series in the pilot style. They wouldn't even need to change anything else.
Thanks for reminding me about the last minute reveal. I'm so glad i didn't back this because it would have hurt me more.

>Timing Director: Genndy Tartakovsky
I remember as a kid seeing the clips from the pilot in the intro and wondering where the fuck were they from, and why everybody looked so damn weird (specially Otto).
You idiots. Those "videos game" designs were a nod to development art from Bill Otomo back when Lakewood Plaza Turbo was still in the early stages of becoming a series (its working title was ‘Knockout Heroes’ at the time).
Rad has always been a Piccolo knockoff since the beginning (ok-ko.tumblr.com
So were both Rocko and Heffer supposed to be yellow, or was Heffer made Yellow after they dropped it from Rocko?
Those designs in the top don't look all that different from the "Grim & Evil" (ie, B&M season 1) designs.
Series is better
Both are shit
Pilot is much better
Worst one here for sure
They were also putting on fake Japanese accents in the pilot
I wonder if it was before they got the actual singers?
What happened??
Rocko was actually changed because a toy company that Nick was licensing to didn’t like him yellow. Joe Murray apparently never liked the color he got changed to.
Yeah, that's what makes me wonder if he planned from the beginning to have both Heffer and Rocko be the exact same color. I don't think that would have looked too good.
The current designs are a lot better, Gernet looks a lot tougher with the fro, Steven doesn't look like a balding man in his mid 30s and what even is Pearl?
Blessed are the pilot watchers who saw the catbro's fate coming...
The top was trying really hard to be mixture of the Johnny Quest/90's zany style but it's better that they got more detailed and less cartoon and bouncy as the show started to develop their characters beyond expys
This guy
The worst
that cow looks angry as hell
Pilot = Slenderman
Series = sorta-generic to PBS Kids
Christ
The shows style got refined further over the years, but to highlight the big changes I juxtaposed the pilot with the very first episode that came out the same year (1969).
Pilot Rabbit also had a mom, being a little kid and all.
Traditional hand animation vs shitty digital, this is why people prefer anime more than western cartoons. Soul vs souless at its finest
OLD GOOD NEW BAD
You did it. You broke it down to the bare essentials.
>Pilot is much better
2016 video game
Man the original pilot was so good, I wanted it to be a show. OK KO is one of ugliest and worst looking piles of shit I have seen on CN since Problem Solverz, I regret my faith in this show
They never did the voices in the show (and yes, that includes the Japanese version).
Some of KO's early concepts were cute, too.
Got the early concepts for Enid?
anthonyholden.tumblr.com
Here's the whole post.
I hate this show.
>digital tween fest vs traditional """animated""" slide show
they are both crap
I liked both designs, but the animation kinda changed through the seasons.
Oh my god! I didn't knew that before.
Huh, I always thought Eileen was thought of later on
I bet she has great tits.
S'what I was thinking too.
Why is Arnold not wearing any pants?
>those lines
THICC!
why they blackface her
Yea Forums showing its racism again.
I am so fucking glad they took out that "grampers" joke.
That pilot shit is Nightmare Before Christmas tier character design.
Show has better designs, Pilot has a better artstyle.
Sugar's side sketches would be the closest we'd get to seeing the characters in the pilot's style.
the funny and sad thing is that nu-simpsons is generally animated better.
>Steven doesn't look like a balding man in his mid 30s
He looks like a man even in final version, children aren't meant to have hair like that.
The pilot played up his obesity more, give him more of a vibe of "loser teen with bodyweight issues" which was kind of the point of the character.
turns out the pilot was just one of the many time loops that happened before the current one
>soulless
>even more soulless
>we could have gotten KO with shoes
Wasn't this Pilot inside a litteral Playstation disc once you put it in the PC
Tiger Woods 99 for PS1.
So they only performed the opening? A show that's supposed to be about them, and they aren't really involved.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Like that user said is easy money, they also hire separate people as the voice actors because the original artists are likely much better as musicians than as actors.
I stopped watching after season 2. Kinda lost interest when Partrick Warburton left the show. Is the rest of the show worth watching? From what I've seen it looks like it got more serious.
Anime art style is going to take over cartoons soon. All the people making content now are millenials who grew up watching Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon. And anime is just generally getting very popular right now.
he never left bruh
He was definitely absent at one point. They replaced him with Sergeant Hatred.
Holy shit what happened. Is it just a thing where CN simplifies everything?
The only thing needed to fix Enid's design is to taper her legs so they actually get thinner down by the ankles.
>Arnold's legs
>"No kids" sign
>Still take in Arnold and allow him to invite however many friends he wants
>Give him the best room in the bordering house
>Even allow Gerald to rent a room for a quarter a day just to help his family teach him a life lesson because he's Arnold's friend
Grandpa and Grandma are based.
>even dumpier
That's why she was so much hotter in the pilot.
It wasn't so much Warburton temporarily quitting as it was Brock just not showing up for most of the episodes.
Some of the best "old people" characters ever. Lots of personality and charm.
All these great designs and is what they went with?
He finally got it.
Kappa Mikey
You can't make this shit up
World War who?
Anime uses digital animation you fucking idiot
"White Devils" makes me laugh every time
I'm so sad they ruined the look of Bee. It's the reason I never tried out this show.
Apparently it sucked anyway so no big loss.
KND is definitely one where the pilot looks too wonky in a not appealing way.
Where do you think you are?
Same thing happened with Jackie Chan Adventures.
every episode had those really brief live-action segments that showed the girls goofing around
Yeah, Heff was always yellow.
I'm glad they changed it, it looks weird having them be the same colour.
Like a lot of decisions that show made, I really have no idea what anyone could have been fucking thinking.
Show if we're talking Season 1. Pilot for most stuff after that.
That isn't from the pilot, it's just a very early design. Pilot Katara is pretty close to series Katara.
Both are shit
I'm torn on this one because while I like the pilot's artstyle better, the designs are somewhat lacking. Pearl just looks like a mess, Garnet's flatter hair makes it look like she just got out of the shower or something, and Steven looking more his age is just kind of offputting considering his mannerisms. Amethyst looks alright though.
It's a shame that Tulip got simplified, the artstyle in the concept art was amazing
Is that the fucking Grinch
Why?
en.wikipedia.org
no waaaaay, so in the episode where the boys play as tiger woods running away from his swedish wife throughout, it was in reference to this?
Cosmo is actually inteligent in the pilot, becomes increasingly more retarded as the show went on. Was Cosmo actually having alzheimer syndrome?
That's technically not the pilot, and neither is Jesus vs Santa. Cartman Gets a Anal Probe had a few scenes that were changed digitally or missing.
archive.org
I still find it funny that KND started as side-characters to Kenny and the Chimp, and ended up becoming one of the most well thought-out concepts for a kids’ show ever.
I remember from "Power Mad" (the second short) Cosmo proudly states "we're two halves of a whole idiot". Cosmo and Wanda we're both kind of dumb and even then Cosmo was the dumber one
I still stand by my opinion that Duckman is the only decent thing Klasky Csupo ever produced.
yea that's pretty cute. I'm glad we got Tulip's current design at least, they kind of did a failed take on the concept art in the pilot.
holy shit with this
Same, but hey I’m not complaining
Remastered
So they were basically The Delightfuls without the malice.
My only issue with the ATLA pilot is that the characters look like they're from King of the Hill at times (I actually think Bryke worked on that show before Avatar)
I was dissapointed when I first saw the final show designs, but now that we're several seasons in, the show designs are better. (especially Pearl's)
I like pilot Enid's costume better but losing the weird noses is a plus.
Show Candace looks cuter and P&F themselves look pretty much unchained
I'm still surprised the show turned out pretty good after that clusterfuck of a pilot.
Oddly enough, the first ABC promo to have Pepper Ann in it had clips from both the show and its unaired pilot.
There was also a proto Pepper Ann in YM Magazine but I've never seen a scan of those comics to see how that design compares to either of these.
Look at the final product and look at the concept art, you'd have to be a retard to not know what they were thinking. Economy of lines and a very obvious philosophy of shapes, the characters can all be broken down very easily into shapes, allowing them to be easily drawn no matter what they happen to be doing. It means that most of the time, hashing out average shots of them won't take long, leaving more time for the wacky cartoon shit the show was ultimately filled with.
Still not entirely sure how Pearl went from "Female Ziggy Stardust" to "Birdwoman" but I'm happy with the one we got
>from teenagers to ten year olds
>Fred got whitewashed
Also they were called The Flagstones at the time and Betty had beady eyes like Barney and Wilma.
The pilot scene would get reworked into the first season's third episode.
I think Hank would have liked if Dean stayed unfuckable
>fucking nips ruin everything
You really don't like japan?
URINE
AND
FECES
FELINE
Not exactly the pilot because I couldn't find it anywhere, but the first Gustavus shorts had a very different art style than the rest.
Margaret is l-lewd
Not sure if this count as a pilot, but this was pretty much the original concept of Family Guy.
It was 100% proto Family Guy, though firstly aimed at kids.
I like the idea of Peter and Brian being together a lot more than Brian and Stewie. That and the style makes it way more appealing than what we got.
If this had gotten 2 or 3 seasons in this art style, Family Guy would legit be remembered as a masterpiece.
me too brother
It was too smart for kids, most of what Steve says would go over their heads.
It didn't have to be for kids, the style and the dynamics have nothing to do with it.
>Still not entirely sure how Pearl went from "Female Ziggy Stardust" to "Birdwoman" but I'm happy with the one we got
Her early designs flipped back and forth between her looking a lot like a man, actually cute designs (pic related) and looking female but ugly as fuck. The final design was basically the cute Pearl design with a really big pointy nose and hair added to it.
thanks for telling me
>youtube.com
this pilot is AMAZING! all the camera stuff and the level of animation. very impressive. i see why they picked it up. amazing work.
still why do they all have those long necks? it unnervs me.
This just screams 90’s
Cosmo was a lot more charming originally, really hated the changes to his personality.
Damn that's a solid Christopher Walken impression.
They also had a son, Fred, Jr., who actually made it into early merchandising.
The first two episodes of Leopold the Cat used a different animation technique altogether.
And then there are the claymated shorts
>the intro alone was enough of a 'pilot' for the execs to greenlight
That's how based this show was.
Which is odd because, unlike the B:TAS intro, EEnE's intro tells us nothing about the story, the world, and practically nothing about the characters. It's just nice looking wacky animation.
The intro tells us quite a bit about the three main characters.
>Ed's a messy goofball who doesn't know his own strength
>Edd's a socially awkward neat freak who has a compulsive desire to fix stuff
>Eddy's a showboater who always needs to be the center of attention and is easily angered
I like it. But it's unmarketable.
>they looked like young teenagers than malformed midgets
holy shit why did they change that?
SHAKE ZULA
wait, really?
The one on the lower right would've been so cool to have as the MC design, especially if they had kid goku's voice actor as promised, and consistent art.
>World War Who?
I always liked the theory that, because his "anti-fairy" was intelligent on the outside but actually a massive moron on the inside, Cosmo was actually a very intelligent person acting like an idiot to get away with the horrible, horrible shit he does to everyone around him.
There were also comics in the Simpsons Magazine.
this is the best newgrounds cartoon ive seen in a while
Yeah I like what we got better. The artstyle much better.
This artstyle is the future and i love it
EEnE is absolutely kino.
They really didn't. Varied character designs sure. But they artstyle was practically the same. That's why the crossover episodes were never as jarring as other studios.
but why make him a nigger
Really REALLY wish they stayed with this designs and added the pilot style of animation.
Much can be said about Steven Universe but Rebecca's style is really good, it's kinda sad seeing that it was so watered down, the show would be much more unique with the old animation.
We could have had it all but CN pussed out of the budget.
>109259729
Motherfucker, I'm the biggest weeb in this thread and even I think you're a fucking idiot.
It's possible to have current designs but still in Sugar's style, it's just that most of the people she hired are incapable of drawing these characters well to begin with. Maybe like, five of the board artists total over the course of the series are really good at drawing these characters.
Also, Ian JQ said somewhere in a Tumblr + Reddit post that Sugar did not change the style because CN wanted her to for budget. He said CN was totally on board with the original style, but that Sugar wanted to change it because she wanted the animators to follow the board artists and felt it was going to be better if the board artists were interpreting the characters in their style rather than trying to mimic hers. So she redesigned them to be simpler that way you could spot the differences between Jeff or Raven's art, for example.
I love Rebecca's style, even with the simplified designs, everything she posts, even when is doodly, is really nice looking.
I guess what I want back the most is the color palette, it was more fitting for the show.
Also yeah sadly the choice of "the style of the boarder should be easily seen" kinda shot her in the foot because some boarders drew the characters in a super messy way, it was off-putting sometimes.
I wonder what they'll do for the "next season".
