April O'Neil was originally portrayed as a computer programmer who operated a second hand shop in between employment. The April in the 1987 cartoon was practically a different character already.

And since the 2003 April is way closer to the original character than the 1987 one, don't think of the 1987 April as the starting point of that. It's more like the 1987 was scrapped, started over with a more comic accurate version and then got derailed with the third cartoon. Don't ever think of the 1987 April as the original character because she isn't, never was and never will be, that is a fact.

The turtles became popularized to the public at large with the 1987 cartoon. It and all cartoon versions after, as well as the IDW comic and most other media portrayed her as a white redhead. In Mirage she was a white brunette. In issue 4 she specifically says she got a perm which is why her hair looked like that. It was the '80s and a ton of white girls had hair like that. This is what the character looked like before she got the perm.
