I love these creation threads
gives me a reason to come back to this site
Holy shit, got a blog? this is professional quality!
Yo these are legit good
Do you have a social media?
you did this for yourself or did you actually worked on a movie?
Shit, I misread the OP. Sadly no, but in apologies I will give the sauce.

I think this is really cool, for some reason.

here's my tumblr
I think this needs a little more anticipation to make the snap feel more like a snap, it kind of looks like the fingers are just sliding off each other
hot.
This is amazing
what do you guys use for animation? i started with flash but then i moved to clip studio paint which frankly is the best program i have used thus far.
a problem i always had with animating programs was that their drawing tools always sucked ass since most of the were meant to work through vectorization and puppet rigging
I hear TVPaint is best if you want to have good quality line-work. Personally I've been considering roughing something out in Flash to get the timing down, then finishing it in Photoshop, so I can use the better drawing tools.
I've also done animation purely IN Photoshop. It's janky but it looks good.
>It's the "you can't criticize it unless it's also your profession" meme
I've been using Krita in the mean time until I can figure out what's better. Not a huge fan of having to use hacky workarounds to get some stuff done.
ah yeah, i used to use photoshop exclusively but the way it linked layers with frames made it a real pain in the ass if i wanted to add or take away frames mid-scene, on top of that it stacked them instead of just keeping a list of fixed positions so you couldnt really space out your keys beforehand
Try the Animdessin2 plugin. I wouldn't have even bothered trying to animate in Photoshop without that.
is clip studio actually good for animations? i never hear anyone talk about it and i'm not sure if upgrading to EX is worth it
i did these
on clip studio and frankly it was really easy to do so, its a little cluttered and the way it handles copy/pasting frames is akward but once you get used to it it's pretty good
That's terrible. Is she in low gravity or something? She just sort of ascends and then comes back down. There doesn't seem to be any force propelling her upwards.
yeah, i didnt give her enough emphasis to her crouching and then i just left her far too long in the air, this was one of my first animations when i started seriously practiscing
Do animatics count?
sure, share with the class user
I've shared these on Yea Forums before. I've made a few other things, but these are probably the best examples.
youtube.com
youtube.com
I also made an animatic for an original pilot, but that isn't public.
anyone got a link to op's webcomic? I forgot the name
disregarding-reality.tumblr.com
You could put some follow through on the ponytail
and have less frame when she is up.
Are there any other animation plugins you would recommend for photoshop?
Is that person(?) supposed to slide across the floor like that?
bumping a good thread
I recognize you, OP
you're into some weird shit, my guy, but you make some alright animations
Posting some lil dude I worked on, nothing too complex, someone did mention the pose reminded them of Keanu at the e3 so I was starting to draw that.
>you like to complain about animation
Yes, okko is thrash.
That's a nice looking hand.
Nice reading comprehension retards
Nice
I thought you left us...
I'm still learnin. Gonna start making some shorter stuff in the future.
Got my start in flash back in 2007. Went to school for it. Proceeded to let my skills rot while playing videogames all day.
Currently I've got clip studio EX and the adobe suite. But I still sit around playing video games all day. I've got ideas anons. Why do I do this to myself...
EX is great. keep an eye out, they put it on sale all the time
that's a long-ass pinky. Just as big as the index finger
Reminds me of Normal Porn for Normal People by Aogami
I also used to really like EZtoon
i'll contribute with a plain old walk cycle.
I am impressed by work of all of you guys. I didn't even knew that ypu could animate so vibrantly
This is really well done, user.
Awesome character models.
Great balance of sfx and soundtrack.
Only recommendation is looking out for those empty spots. They come off as "Dead air" rather than pregnant pauses.
Good voice acting but maybe look into collaborating with some other VAs for variety's sake.
Keep it up! Can't wait to see where you are in even just one more project.
P.S. If you're interested in other VAs or maybe some storyboard help. I uh...got a resume. Done some pitches. Keep on rockin.
Happy Harry?
Issat you?
We all know you just want a screenshot of Enid's ass saved on your PC user
Contributin.
My very first animation. For a quest I run where user is a background character in Star vs.
Fun fact: Starnon never
good stuff dude, subscribed
Robot Jones should not have dropped that Acid.
Might have some performance anxiety. Failure avoidance.
Get past that, get around the idea of performing as a chore and instead make it a conversation. You'll be alright. You have good sense of weight. Very nice camera movements.
Maybe push your character models a bit. I'd need to see more to offer any other critiques.
So I guess you better get on that, huh?
Thanks guys. The voices have always been a weak point for me, I definitely need to consider looking for some voice actors in the future. A lot of people in this thread have some great dynamic animated movements that I'm pretty envious of, I might have to spend more time focusing on shorter videos with that focus in mind.
im not gone, i just went to a better place...
helping hannah finish satina
Actually love this.
Nice perspective shot of the hall.
The way you've animated the door however kind of makes it look the monster "body weights" through the door.
The impact after the door's explosion is cool. The slide even makes sense. That is a big, heavy creature.
The pieces just falling off-frame however feels a bit like a "fukkit" maneuver.
If you had them interact with the floor or even a few fall off of your monster it might deepend the scene. Like how drywall shakes off our furry friend in gif related.
Or if you added a camera shake in the impact.
Overall very nice. Awesome timing. Well planned. Cool critter.
Now I just watched 10 sec of it but men, that was amazing. So many little jokes.
And he takes critique well. Applause.
If a stranger can offer any suggestion at all.
What about loops?
Good to hear.
I appreciate the encouragement and critiques. Man, I really don't have much to show for myself. Just looked at my stuff and the best thing I've done in the past 2 years is an NSFW commission and (as I'm writing this, I hope I can upload it, because I've seen that someone has posted it in another thread.) the attatched gif
is he supposed to turn into a princess midway the fight?
Never done any before, but seems like a good way to go about it. When I started initially I bit off way more than I could chew, kept making stuff that was 6-8 minutes long that would take months and months to finish.
yea.. I should probably finish it and add the dress and ponytail.
Here's something I rotoscoped from bakemonogatari
something i started a couple weeks ago and still havent gotten around to cleaning up and finishing
Not impressive, just showing what I've done.
Oh that was you! Haha I'm and love that gif!
And all I said holds true! Amazing sense of weight.
The STICKING the top of Jackie's head does to the wall.
The gun spin. The pinky out.
MM!
The seashell! It suddenly becomes a necklace again when she dies!
It's a bravisimo.
Stop focusing on what you're -not- doing.
What you don't attempt doesn't matter. At all.
Every stroke counts. Take it from an animation amateur and professional project manager.
You are more than an expectation.
Also, what'd you charge for that?
Hey now. That gave you practice in setting up a narrative. That shows in your Quidditch animation and seems to have developed completely in your latest one with the demons.
Loops need to play to visual interest. They're bite sized. So they make it easier to share with others. Or use as memes/reaction images.
I've done the same. Or worked on other people's projects as a director/storyboard artist.
Ambition is fine.
Scope management is a skill.
At least you're consistent, and focus on getting a nice product.
thanks user!
again I appreciate the encouragement. It means a lot. I'll probably go home and work on the comms I've been putting off.
The jackie gif i did for myself.

I think I charged $30 for
...In three fuckin' expressions you've somehow managed to become "Dragon's Lair"
congratulations are in order.
Hold on, how are you helping out Hannah? Doing in betweens over the internet? Just giving pointers? Sounds great that you two are working together.
You're very right, if anything I'm just excited that my interest hasn't stagnated. There's so much to learn, so many more skills to hone, and I like the idea of doing some stuff that's a bit outside of my comfort zone.
Thanks for the encouragement, user.
stay blesst, stranger. Anytime.
thats some high praise user, thank you
yup, im doing inbetweens over discord, she sends me the scene with just the keys and i animate her characters, luckly her style fits really well with mine.
to stay on topic, have you guys ever tried to animate someone else's work? it is an important part of being a professional animator, i found it really hard at first to accomodate my drawings to someone else's
Yes. Although I found it just be a cool challenge rather than a hill to climb.
^
Storyboard sequence there.
Pic Related were the character Model Sheets.
Wild stuff.
How often do you find you go "Off Model" and how often do you get away with it?
with satina very rarely because, since im doing inbetweens i have a constant reference that helps me stay on model.
if i have to animate the scene from scratch myself then it gets way harder and the people im working with have high standards to stay on-model so i never "get away" with it, which i think is a good thing, it helps me develop discipline and rigor when it comes to animation. i dont want to go the steven universe route
the thing is that the more cartoony something is the more leeway there is because the characters can squash and stretch
>rookie animator
>it's porn and violence
Tell a story, not despair and you'll go farther.
Learn to reply and your opinion might go further, Boomer.
I love animation
Yeah I lucked out with everybody in that gig being a living jellybean.
My own art style is actually pic related. Sort of between a Biker Tattoo and a coloring book done for 80s shows.
How did you decide which artists you wanted to work with in the past? Is it just that you like their previous work?
they were the artists that offered me a job, that simple.
out of pure luck i managed to network with a couple of other anons here who liked my work and we started helping each other in our projects. "choosing" which artists to work with is not something that comes until you are really top tier i imagine, as in, james baxter, level of good, otherwise is like any other job, you just take whatever comes your way
All I like to draw are faces. Coincidentally I made this little test animation saying the same phrase as OP
I really haven't practiced or sunk a lot of time into doing it- it's something I think would be really cool to get into but at the same time I'm aware how much time & effort is involved in making it look good. At the least, I'd like to make it a hobby to occasionally work at and improve.
Wait, I'm a retard. Not the same phrase. I'm a dopey fucker
Im pretty sure thats official animation test runs for the movie.
i've found that making a thing is as enjoyable as vidya.
and then putting that thing into the world and seeing a few numbers go up is addicting as fuck. even if it's only in the double digits it's like a slot machine effect or something.
and then looking at youtube analytics graphs is really interesting to the point that i want to make more shit to see what changes.
this is a really unhealthy method based around addiction to my own narcissism but it's kept me productive. so if you want to make shit, lean into your addictions user.
i'm not an "animator" but because i made a music vid with this and other stop motion shit in it, i'm getting a paid animation gig
youtube.com
i feel like im slowly getting to a point where i dont suck at this
I'm in the same fuckin boat user, I wasted this summer playing vidya when I told myself I was going to sit and learn this shit. Here's some practice shit I did. Got inspired watching ballmasterz and wanted to replicate Gaz running
Yeah that's not too surprising. I kind of worry about the idea of getting so caught up in working for others that you have no time to work on personal projects, especially when independent animation isn't exactly a lucrative business. The personal stuff always feels more important to me but it's undeniable that networking and collaborations help establish your career faster.
i think its just a matter of grinding at it, raise in the ranks and eventually hope that you will get to the pitching room or will save the budget to finance your own stuff.
how long did rebecca had to work in adventure time before she finally managed to fo steven universe?
of course there is always the risk that you end up like richard williams and the thief and the cobbler, or don bluth and his recent idea for a dragon's lair movie, so caught up trying to survive doing someone else's projects that you never find the chance to do yours, its a balancing game and a compromise, inevotably you will have to accomodate or coach your ideas so that they can fit on the market. maybe you WONT get to do you R-rated idea of a space drug dealer/pimp who becomes an anti-hero to avenge one of his dead prostitutes, but perhaps you can do you pg-13 idea of a space smuggler who has to save his girlfriend
>maybe you WONT get to do you R-rated idea of a space drug dealer/pimp who becomes an anti-hero to avenge one of his dead prostitutes, but perhaps you can do you pg-13 idea of a space smuggler who has to save his girlfriend
Absolutely. I feel it's pretty easy to get caught up in the fantasy of wanting to be some revered auteur, but there comes a time when you need to compromise. I think I've always leaned towards the Thief and the Cobbler way, wanting to make something so original and beautiful that people can't help but love it and want more of it, but spending too much time on passion projects only gets you so far and sometimes it can be a step backwards.
Unfinished. I need to get back around to it.
Hola Facu
Nice to see you are still around
animated some of my friends drawings.
>you like to complain about animation Yea Forums, so share what you have done
I hope you've never complained about food in your life.
you people are the worst, i don't like you lot stinking up media.
oh my
Well, most all of it is pornographic, but if I show you a rough sketch rather than the finished sprite maybe it'll pass blue.
I make my own tools. I'm a dev by day-job; this is just my hobby.
PLEASE don't tell a story. You AREN'T writers. You can't just choose to write a story and have it work out. If you aren't at the very least well-read then save us the despair.
I think it's pretty disingenuous to encourage animators not to write their own stories. Sure, the art is always going to be the focus and most animators are known for being shitty writers, but the few that put legitimate effort into both eventually develop something worthwhile.
Look, just, focus on your core competency and what you love to do and don't listen to trends. Good writing is made by people who are compelled by passion to write just as good art is made by people who are compelled by passion to make art. This is an environment of abysmal cartoon writing because networks save are trying to save a buck by having their artistic director and their show-runner be the same person and by having all their animators double as story-boarders , but that doesn't mean it's not retarded. If you want to be a show-runner then you better make some networking connections and then I guess you can shill your shitty writing to people so that you can get e-famous. But if you just want to draw then by all means just draw.
>punch beams from the punch dimension
This user's right.
Animators are, at most, a combination of special effects artists, illustrators, and actors. Learn how to sell a peformance with conviction above everything else and you'll excel, because god knows there are a lot of animators that just all do the same fucking cookie cutter character acting they got taught in school and never venture from that. There's nothing wrong with that, its an amazing artform, but fucking learn the difference between clear visual storytelling and good writing, because there IS a difference.
If you want to tell stories, but in the fucking work and write for as long as you've drawn first. Draft short stories, get legitimate criticism and deal with it, maybe make some short comics and not some eternal webcomic diatribe that's been done to death ten times over. Hell, maybe even try to get paid to write things for people.
Maybe if you develop this skill you'll be a big dick chad who can do both, and then you'll just need to learn how to sell yourself. But for the rest of you? You're better off swallowing your pride and collaborating instead of taking it for granted that you can do everything.
Look, listen or don't. But trust me as an employed person, no one wants to hire a jack-of-all, master-of-none. Just be good at what you do.
>You're better off swallowing your pride and collaborating instead of taking it for granted that you can do everything.
Unironically based. Learning how to work with people is demonstrably more important than being good at your job.
>no one wants to hire a jack-of-all, master-of-none.
that's why self employment is an option, wagie. Pic very related.
True but you don't have to be a professional to tell a story. Anyone can tell a story. We're not talking about making a feature length film or a comic or anything. Hell no one even mentioned getting hired. But regardless, people are always gonna be drawn to making their own stories, for better or for worse. You can say that their ideas aren't good or whatever but in that case I think it's more about a creator wanting to get their ideas out than about honing a skill.
Neat. Those sorts of happy series of events are always interesting to hear about.
oh hey nice, you got a blog?
thread is givin me flashbacks to a simpler time, watching animations for hours on end.
You tell a story within the animation. I'm not talking about a full fledged 30 minute cartoon.
youtu.be
Here’s a cartoon i’m working on starring this man. I’ve been 99% independent and this is my first step into animation (though i’ve been on this for a year and a half)
Artists shouldn't tell stories, period. They should draw the stories of people who know how to tell stories. I feel like artists have this retarded sense of self importance and entitlement with their skills as if they're the ones that matter when they're a dime a dozen and can easily be replaced or swapped out, whereas a good writer is rare and usually always gets dicked over by an artist.
I'm genuinely surprised Yea Forums has talent
Artists don't owe writers their art and writers don't owe artists their writing. You can be a great writer and make a shittily drawn comic or a great artist with a garbage story.
What program do you guys use?
One, for example
It's not much but I hope it actually works
You literally tell stories within the frame itself. That is story telling.
The one part I disagree with in this is that I think genuinely good art IS as rare as genuinely good writing; it's just that people accept middling art more than they do middling writing. Which isn't surprising considering how geared towards language we are.
It's just... 60 years ago there was a bare minimum standard of writing that everyone who attempted to write had. Now, it seems like even THAT is rare.
Not really, DESU. There are surprisingly few plugins for it, given how potentially useful it could be, at least for artsy animation.
Would you recommend I pirate toonboom or something like it?
you should just use Krita. it's free.
this is great, got anything else?
I'm going to bump this thread, it's nice to see some good stuff.
I love this dude's stuff. He's got the right amount of structure and style that tickles that spot in my mind where I know everything good sits.
I also did And just small things here and there.
I should definitely come back to this one.
Unironically a gorillion times better than most shit out there today
Nice exaggeration. on this. I feel like that pose of her dropping the bottle should be a bit longer but that might just be because of the nature of looping gifs.
Unironically go to the psycologist. You have talent, don't let the vydia take you appart for contribute to the industry.
>youtube.com
jesus fucking christ we have people like this here?
I mean, I can try, but i rarely have time to make gifs these days.
Oh wow I really dig this. I dunno why I've got a soft spot for characters making faces.
Thanks, user!
That's cute.
I want to fuck that guy!
Annoyingly enough I'm apparently good at it. I find it easier to draw other people's styles then doing my own.
These threads surprise me in that they weed out the insufferable users we have.
NTA but before I went to college for animation I thought like you did and came off abrasive to things just like this.
This is a barrier if you think this stuff is cringe, you are interested in drawing and animating cartoons yet somehow differentiate what's cringe and what's not.
Take it from someone who used to think that video of those girls playing with foam at the store was the cingiest thing ever, then couldn't get enough of those types of people because it's better to work beside them 8 hours a day than to sit beside a quiet autist that only does his work.
Just to be clear, nobody will want to talk to you if ever break out into the real world with your animation if you talk like this and literally pick on people or their work because you think it's not cool enough for you.
I accidentally lost a friend at work because I snickered on reaction without thinking when she brought up that she sells her art on Gaia for points. A lovely person just fucking gone because I was an asshole which I got from being here among you cucks.
I'm not sure what you mean?
that is actually much more valued when it comes to hiring someone in the animation industry, i imagine.
like, you can be fucking da vinci as an illustrator but if you cant adapt to other people's styles then you are useless to a studio as an animator
For a second i thought those dots above eyes are smaller eyes not eyebrows.
i think this is not so much an universal as much as it is about context.
different people angage with others in different ways, some workspaces will have quiet autists and that is where probably other quiet autists will feel comfortable working, other places will have a different tone and will be able to take in minor ribbing without breaking a friendship because of it, and other places will be more sensitive to that kind of attitude and it will be best to be polite to a fault.
is all about being able to read the room, adapt to circumstances and find the place you fit best. i am more comfortable in places like these but i am also able to dial down my abrassiveness when im in other social situations.
its a hard skill that needs training
This was my first animation... at that point I didn't even know what an animatic or a story board was. Even thoigh it's not good, I still kind of like it
Made this a year ago
man for being a first it's quite impressive, did you study about animation before doing this or you just started drawing frames?
I didn't study prior this, but a year later I starten 3D animation, and now I can recognize that it has tons of problems, but oh well
I forgot to thank you, though!
Nice, what's this for your own personal project? lots of fun character designs. It's one of those clips where you get to see something new each time you rewatch based on who you focus on and I simply love those.
