Editorial and X-book writers for adding a number of deaths caused by M-Day, and the Decimation spreading across the multiverse, and the effort they put into trying to make Wanda unusable ever again
Doctor Doom, for being the villain retconned into being responsible for it all
X-fags, for refusing to accept that retcon so they can keep on hating Wanda
Bendis again, for being a writer who retcons a lot of other writers' work, yet gets petty about trying to ignore his own work getting retconned.

The decline already started years earlier. The books were running on fumes by the late 1990s, Claremont's return failed, while Morrison, Casey and Austen changed things so much that readers started leaving in large numbers, and other Marvel books started outselling X-Men books.
