The entire series being released in two gigantic hardcovers has a better chance of surviving than multiple hardcovers.

I honestly think they're just trying to appease collectors by building goodwill. No new fans are gonna buy a brick of a book like that, but shelfags will buy it just because it's big and has more bang for its buck.
