What was the reason behind giving them such weak powers?
What was the reason behind giving them such weak powers?
To give their Rogues Gallery a fighting chance?
Because they were only being trained in how to use/control their powers in a school setting, not to go out and do hero shit (which they eventually did anyway).
back in the day, in that sweet spot of the mid-70s to the late 80s, most characters' power levels were lower than they are now.
it was the 90s and its overly stylized art that blew everything out of proportion.
The original x-men all had weak powers, as did most of the second crew. Power creep brought them up over time. The same is sort of true for the New Mutants as well, Sunspot, and Cannonball for sure.
Man, both original five and giant-size teams are much stronger
Magik, Warlock and Magma are all insanely powerful. Straight up planet killers
Unrelated, what an ugly boring cover.
A guy that can fly, a guy who is vaguely strong and athletic, a guy who throws snowballs, a girl who moved books and wood planks around, hardly heavy hitters.
GSXM had a stronger line up, but a short range teleporter, a guy who flies and screams, another vaguely strong and athletic guy, not terribly impressive. Even Wolverine was pretty weak compared to what he would become.
Because the story isn't set in the DC universe where everyone is op.
user, even a guy who screams and flies could obliterate New Mutants exept for Cannonball. On the team we have: Girl that could turn into your basic normal wolf. Girl who can show you what you like or fear. Jobber girl. Boy who can become vaguely strong for five-ten minutes and still get K.Oed by a normal punch. And unlike O5 or Giant-Size, this team originally had no long range fighters, outside of maybe Karma.
