Other shows on the network have hands, they just straight up changed the artstyle because they're lazy, which is too bad since most of the pilot/shorts artstyles including the one in your pic related are better than how the show turned out

Sonic OVA definitely had circle hands but they were mainly used in scenes were characters were running and the hands didn't need detail (except for Knuckles but he literally wearing mittens). Tails is just standing there and has a circle fist for no reason.

Hands can be a very expressive part of anatomy. To just skip over that shows a lack of creativity.

Yea Forums I think you're being too harsh on this show. I see potential in it. Not like KND(which had way more potential) but I see some potential regardless of its shitty art style. The music is actually pretty good and some of the voice actors aren't too bad. The backstory's pretty decent and somebody with some editing skills could improve on it

I never understand why some fans can’t even handle it. I may disagree with people who hate the show, but I sure as hell understand their problems with it.

I don't mind the art style at all but the circle hands are so sad. Hands can be very expressive, and this show makes no use of them.

Fuck fucks sake, it's not even that it's digitally inked. However it's lazy incompetents. People shit on Ian's style and claim he's gotten to where he is with his ties to Sugar all the time despite him working on other works such as Venture Bros. Ok K.O sometimes is on par with NockForce in terms of movement. With how Adventure Time turned out with its basic artstyle, you'd think shit like this wouldn't have taken as many shortcuts.
Lastly, the art style isn't what's ugly it's the fucking backgrounds. I may not know what they use to design them, but whatever 'brush' or effect the artist was using needs to be toned down to 0.

TL;DR If you want to exaggerate expressions and save time/budget on a gag with low frames fine, but don't make that shit the normal.

The only thing I like about this show's animation is the aliased high contrast scanned ink style linework

the show is being naive on purpose. its a callback to middle school art and fan culture. its meant to be garish and juvenile. not saying that you have to enjoy it but if you look at the tone they're executing the style fits perfectly

SEGA isn't disallowing anything in the comics. IDW is just building their own world and not bloating it with useless characters from every end of the Sonic franchise for literally no reason. SoA for decades did a fucking abysmal job at protecting the IP and now everyone is bending over to fix it, moving the comic series to a better publisher, clearing up the casts of the games, putting the franchise in the hands of people who actually care about it

You can like something even when it has its faults. People are more willing to forgive poor art as long as it's funny (more or less when the animation is intentionally stunted). Storylines and drama are less forgiving depending on how they’re handled, but still can get away with it if the writing is good enough. OK K.O. is self-aware, so in this case it works out decently. is onto something.

What is it with CN shows and nost being able to keep anything or anyone on fucking model?

Money and a generation of skills-poor narcissists running the show.

We already known they are not allowed to use anythingfrom the classic series because SEGA stated Classic and Modern aare now separate brands.

But here's here using Knuckles Chaotix Bonus Stages with no problem.

The people who shriek about things not being perfectly on model inspired a generation to go too far in the other direction and not try at all.

Fluid animation with a tight budget isn't going to be on model all the time and that's fine, exaggerations and weirdness for fidelity is a good trade off. The problem is ignoring principles entirely to make the workload easier.

It'd be one thing if the ball hands were a consistent design choice like those made in the original Power Puff Girls.

But here's the thing, the artists can't even keep the ball hands consistent.

The characters constantly shift and mutate designs, sometimes the characters have heavily defined fingers, sometimes they have balls for hands, sometimes they have both within the same damn shot.

That's the big fucking problem with OK KO, it's inconsistent and the only excuse I've ever heard for this glaring problem is "it's meant to be that way" that's a lazy excuse for lazy artists.

They didn't specifically use "Classic" brand characters or locations, just parodied a concept from a Classic game. Big difference as far as licensors are concerned (sadly).

I get what Sugar and Ian want to do. They like it when anime productions have little differences among the animators so you can tell who drew what. The problem is artists in Japanese are so crazily trained to be technically proficient, that even an off-model drawing of their detailed characters look great.

An off-model drawing of a character that has the same shape as a snowman done by an American artist who probably "learned how to draw cartoons" rather than learned how to draw in general so they can apply it to their cartooning just ends up looking horrible.

It's what I've inferred from the style of the show and the way the creators talk about it. Sorry to go full autism on y'all but here we go;

Ian has stated he wants the characters to be easy for children to draw. That combined with the references to things like korn, emo culture, video games, the tv specials, they're all things that 90's and early 2000's kids grew up on. The whole thing is a middle school nostalgia bomb. Doubt it was accidental. The use of the S-symbol also solidifies the juvenile notebook doodle concept. I think they were trying to convey the feeling of creative freedom young artists have, where you don't realize your art looks like crap and has way too much going on, because you're twelve, you're having fun, and you think your sonic OC looks fuckin dope. If they had done a really tight and clean style with the over the top world and characters, it wouldve been stupid. I think the show hits different for kids who lived through that awkward baby artist phase, compared to people who just absorb cartoon content without trying to make their own. The characters aren't presented in a style where we were meant to take them seriously. OK KO is a parody, it was never meant to be held to the standards y'all keep holding it to.
