Can confirm, visiting family right now in Mexico and have for many years. Soda at every meal is pretty standard. Hell some people think you mean a flavored drink similar to Kool-Aid when you say water(agua). I've gotten asked multiple times if I was hungover just because I was drinking water as if that's it's only purpose.

Most of Latinamerica grew up watching series dubbed in Mexico or Mexican productions like El Chavo, El Chapulin, and other non-Chespirito series and movies.
Thus, while not necessarily Mexican, Latinamerica grew up to understand the Mexican sense of humor, and can easily relate to any joke based on their culture.
