So what is this and why was it on Toonami last night? I have a good idea but I don't want to just jump right to conclusions out the gate.
So what is this and why was it on Toonami last night...

I honestly have no idea. The first episode fails to do the bare minimum of establishing its plot and characters.
CG crap from Rooster Teeth. Same guys that make RWBY.
I mean they gave it the fucking timeslot right after DBS and pushed MHA to 3:30am so I figured it'd at least be some kind of big deal.
I can answer the why: Rooster Teeth is owned by AT&T. Per AT&T's recent acquisition of Warner, Adult Swim is now also owned by AT&T.
This is AT&T flexing their IP nuts.
because demarco is a faggit
MHA moved to 3:30am a month ago.
Well shit, I kind of stopped watching it after they aired the "United States of Smash" episode so I guess that's my own fault for not knowing.
But why push this of all things? The animation was really shoddy and the first episode didn't tell me anything aside from the MC's being an interracial couple who are fighting "something" in robots.
So remember how Monty gave Rooster Teeth a home made anime that stole from all the magical girl / shounen anime Monty liked and became a insane mega hit?
They're trying to do that again, minus Monty and this time Mecha.
Which means it's made by hacks that doesn't like Mecha and will just steal from Eva.
But yeah thats what it is.
I just have a lot of concerns about it out the gate since it seems like another "forced diversity just because" kind of show. I don't hate what I know about the characters so far but I fully expect at least one (if not all) of the following to be true.
1. The one white guy piloting the red suit is gay, a huge meme that the female cast jokes about constantly, or both
2. The main villain is going to either be a blond white guy who tries to romance the female MC or an old white guy with a short beard.
3. The enemy nation is going to be portrayed as totalitarian "The Empire" level evil with no morality at all.
>1. The one white guy piloting the red suit is gay, a huge meme that the female cast jokes about constantly, or both
desu this is shitty writting and many gay people won't even like it
>2. The main villain is going to either be a blond white guy who tries to romance the female MC or an old white guy with a short beard.
so? this isn't uncommon to litterally any media
>3. The enemy nation is going to be portrayed as totalitarian "The Empire" level evil with no morality at all.
See fucking Star Wars, and no they have no morality, that was something added later on in shit that isn't canon and usually only applied to very few indivuals
Oh, and its got some famous actors to be VAs. Like anyone cares.
>so? This isn't uncommon
It's a show about diversity, why can't the main bad guy be Queen Latifah or something? Old white dudes or stuck up rich white boys being evil is an overdone thing.
>See Star Wars
So because Star Wars does it it's ok for literally everyone to be doing it forever? I actually like seeing some moral ambiguity among enemy characters like we saw in ATLA for example.
Maybe they saw how Meta Runner is better and tried to beat it by giving money to Toonami in hopes for views and ratings would raise for their 'original' show.
Why didn't they just show RWBY? The one with actual fans?
Just air two eps a week or something.
Probably because half of the show won’t fit within the allotted runtime and can already be watched for free online
the plot is meh, but Im a giant robot fag so I like it. Fuck Valentina thou
>have a good idea
If you hate SJW shit, you're going to get a tizzy in the overall run. Personally, I think the show is alright, but there are episodes and scenes that will 100% get people to raise eyebrows or just flat out go "fucking SJWs". It takes awhile for the fighting robots to be piloted properly and the enemy is fairlybunderdevelopes since the show isn't about them but the rraction to them.
they do diversity shit but is only really bad in one episode when they stop they show to explain how Valentina gaynnes work, the rest you can power through
its a terrible roosterteeth mech show that desperately doesn't want to have a plot or villains
AT&T owns Rooster Teeth and Cartoon Network and Toonami is having trouble getting content because anime streaming services give a much better return on investment for licensers.
It starts slow. The main character dies in the first episode, which they don't reveal until later.
Funi isn't giving Toonami the next season of MHA so they can make it exclusive to their streaming service. CN deathslotted it to kill interest.
gen:LOCK is a big deal, it has an A-list voice cast and they're pushing for an Emmy.
Interested in knowing if they're gonna censor pic related, Maisie has a surprisingly filthy mouth.
>doesn't want to have a plot or villains
>Great Union of the Fourth Turning Republics
en.wikipedia.org
You can just admit you're stupid, we won't judge you.
You're putting more thought into this than RT ever will.
none of that is explained or shown in the story
>Plot is meh
>..the enemy is fairlybunderdevelopes since the show isn't about them..
>...desperately doesn't want to have a plot or villains
So it's exactly what I figured it would be from my first impression....fucking great.
>Funi making MHA exclusive to their streaming service
I figured it had to be some dick move level shit like this but that does surprise me....I thought Sabat and Blum were running Toonami and they were in good with Funi.
>Pushing for an Emmy
They'll have to either blow me out of the water with actual good writing (doubtful) or just pull the racism card to accomplish that but I'll hold out hope that it's the former.
> Maisie has a surprisingly filthy mouth.
Also not surprising, I immediately got Harley Quinn vibes from her when I saw her and figured she'd be the "over the top and crazy" steriotype.
>"Funi isn't giving Toonami the next season of MHA so they can make it exclusive to their streaming service. CN deathslotted it to kill interest."
Toonami is fucking dead holy shit
MHA never got good ratings anyway.
They've got that Mike B money bankrolling it, it was always gonna be multiple seasons. Gray tweeted the full name of the Union when people were equating them with nazis. They're actually radical leftists representing a sea change in an alternate future pushing back against the global rise of ethnic nationalism.
>I thought Sabat and Blum were running Toonami and they were in good with Funi.
Funi likes money and streaming anime makes far more cash than selling adspace on a dying programming block.
>They'll have to either blow me out of the water with actual good writing (doubtful) or just pull the racism card to accomplish that but I'll hold out hope that it's the former.
There's a few good speeches, especially from David Tennant's character, but it's mostly highly derivative of mecha anime and exploring cyberethics that's been around for decades. They're going for the inclusivity vote with the genderfluid character.
It's a hot property, people were just streaming it instead of watching it on Toonami.
Shit's gonna hit the fan for the whole block when Attack on Titan catches up with the manga and people realize their favorite anime has the plot of an Alex Jones rant.
>Gray tweeted the full name of the Union when people were equating them with nazis. They're actually radical leftists representing a sea change in an alternate future pushing back against the global rise of ethnic nationalism.
Saying some shit like this outside of the actual show doesn't make them not Nazis....
>They're going for the inclusivity vote with the genderfluid character.
Fucking yikes.....I bet it's the purple mech one isn't it?
>Saying some shit like this outside of the actual show doesn't make them not Nazis....
The point is that fascism isn't a scale, it's a circle. Too far in either direction is a direct threat to freedom.
>Fucking yikes.....I bet it's the purple mech one isn't it?
Yep. They even have a JoJo-tier fabulous fusion dance in cyberspace when they discover drifting is possible with their minds uploaded to the mechs. Aside from the female person's "online" avatar being male, they only spend about twenty seconds explaining genderfluidity vaguely in an early episode.
It's standard Rooster Teeth fare. People don't watch it for the quality, they do it because they enjoy the effort (~S~O~U~L~) and the people behind it.
>a list voice cast
>that Toonami didn’t promote in the slightest
Not like anyone gives a shit about these people, and they all sound like they don’t care either
Jason Demarco runs Toonami
Is that why it shitstomps every show except Super despite airing at 3:30?
It was fucking awful and they waited an extra 5 minutes before the first commercial break. The voice acting is SHIT as well.
Is this that mech show Rooster Teeth teased at last year's anime expo?
See this is what I hate about shows like this, they try so hard to avoid stereotypes and promote "muh diversity" but end up making everyone a blatantly obvious stereotype anyway, just from the OP I could tell what each and every character was about. The best part is you can't fucking call it out without being murdered by the "fans".
Whoever was voicing the black MC sounded bored the entire episode....he would have been a far more interesting character if he just stayed dead.
The tldr is Demarco is unbelievably incompetent and lost two anime shows a few weeks prior to them needing to join the lineup. By some miracle they managed to snag Fire Force with like 2 weeks notice, but their luck ran out there and they had to tap someone equally desperate for something to air.
There is also a lot of fault on retarded fans who aren’t ready to concede that Toonami is an anime block now. Nobody wants western shit especially if it’s crap like this.
Initially they had this slotted for midnight. But it seems they are doing early damage control by having it after Super. Even if it loses a huge chunk of the audience, it’s normal for the post Super show to do that, so it will be harder for people to blame Genlock. Had they put it later, it no doubt would have shown a sharp dip upon starting, and rise upon ending
>Whoever was voicing the black MC sounded bored the entire episode....he would have been a far more interesting character if he just stayed dead.
He gets more interesting after you find out the Union is using copies of his mind to mass-produce holons.
That's also Michael B. Jordan, who's the head producer, so he can sort of phone it in when he wants because he's paying for everything. David and Maisie are the standout voice actors. Dakota isn't even recognizable as herself.
>because they enjoy the effort (~S~O~U~L~)
I suppose it doesn't look like complete garbage, if you judge it on completely on an amateur level. But even on an amateur level, how come it doesn't look good if there is supposedly so much effort behind it?
As I said, effort does not necessarily mean quality.
RWBY supposedly got really great somewhere around S5-S6 but I was done with that show by then, even if everyone was raving about how much better it got in nearly every way.
It's not that RT can't do good, professional shit (supposedly), but if it takes them 5 seasons of a show to do so I'm not interested.
Also, again, a large part of the fanbase watches their shows because it's them that made it, not because of the show itself.
>Effort does not necessarily mean quality
So a bunch of amateurs can work really hard on something that ends up bland and mediocre and we're supposed to enjoy it because they tried their best?
Based, redpilled, and I dare say qualified poster. Trying your best doesn't mean shit if your end product is subpar or absolute fucking shit. Not too mention its better to have an unfinished product that dumped into multiple episodes budget and time than a shoddy product poorly animated and voice acted, but complete. This is how you really know you put soul into it.
What shows did he fuck up and not get anyway? And I thought Toonami being an anime block was obvious for years now, it's never tried to be anything but.
It was either this or RWBY
I mean I hate both but doesn't RWBY have a ridiculous fanbase? That seems like the logical choice if they wanted ratings instead of something most people didn't know existed.
I love the fact that the creators blantly insist that the villians in this show are right wingers, yet no one gets it because Union is portrayed so face-and soulless that you don't even understand whats going on even until the end
>we're supposed to enjoy it
See, I didn't say that. I told you why the fans, those that do like it, like it. I never said anybody was supposed to like anything.
I honestly thought it was just some "War of the Worlds" shit with aliens until the one guy pulled out the badge to save his family.
They can't. RWBY's episode runtime is all over the place with some being 5 minutes and some being a half hour.
They tried to edit it to fit into 13 tv length episodes for Japan but it bombed because so much was cut out.
>the villians in this show are right wingers
Really? I assumed that they were some sort of sci-fi space commies.
The creators just say they aren't...no content in the fucking show says anything about what they are beyond genocidal and totalitarian.
We will never know. And many people still believe since Toonami aired western shit 20 years ago that it’s obligated to continue to do so
Miles and Kerry are awful writers and are awful when it comes to "Show don't tell"
RWBY peaked at vol. 3. Vol. 5 was utter dogshit and 6 was barely passable.
Yeah that's why its beating the majority of the block despite airing at 3:30 am. Man did that move just slap Demarco in the face so not only are they not getting S4 they just lost a loyal audience share that they'll never get back.
Western shows aren't a bad thing when they're good, it's just that anything decent is already taken by other companies. Toonami isn't supposed to be an anime block, it's an action block.
Fuck off. Toonami is the successor to ASA which was an anime block. People want fun stuff like PTE and Food Wars, the lack of action means nothing. Modern day Toonami viewers want anime
If it wasn't for the badge bit anyone would've thought they were just aliens until that one chick admits to being from the Union
I mean you're both right here....it's just that here lately western action shows are more concerned with pushing a political agenda than being a fucking action show and NOBODY wants to see that. If they got something like 2011 Thundercats or Samurai Jack I don't think people would give a fuck.
Toonami used to run fucking Johnny Quest
That was back in the 90s when anime was barely a thing in the west, once they realized people wanted shit like Sailor Moon and YYH things changed in a big way.
Streaming gives License Holders like Funimation a platform to charge lots of money to watch poorly edited and poorly translated anime and sit on the rights. They are too retarded to understand that 4Kids and ADV went bankrupt because they got too greedy with the profits.
The problem is that there's no Western Animation similar to Johnny Quest. Adult Swim burned bridges with the ATHF and Metalocalypse Creators, Mike sounds like he's getting bored with MTM and gonna wrap it up, and Venture Bros is looking to end soon.
They're gonna lose the rights to Family Guy, American Dad, and Bob Burgers soon, leavign only Rick and Morty still active.
>Burned bridges with ATHF and Metalocalypse
I will never not be mad about this...Doomstar Requiem feels like it was lifetimes ago.
I agreed with you until you started bitching about a white guy having a love interest.
When did I bitch about that exactly? I'm just tired of the trope where the spoiled rich blond villain kidnaps the female MC and tries to show her a "grass is greener" scenario while she hates his guts and waits to be saved.
They need to look into producing their own adult cartoons that aren't low budget filler shit and reruns of older cartoons like Samurai Jack. Cartoons like the recent Castlevania would fit in fine, but CN and AS are too fucking braindead to produce anything of quality nowadays. When's the last time we had a decent Batman cartoon? BatB? If they could produce a good quality capeshit cartoon that wasn't PG, it would bring in a lot more viewers. Another problem is every company now has their own streaming service so that's probably out the window already and would need to be an original IP
Even when reading everything in this thread, I still don't know what this show is about
Neither do the creators
It's a mechshit show. It's about the same thing all mechshit shows are about. Giant metal humanoids beating the snot outta each other.
Don't look too deep into the plot.
People with high neural elasticity upload their consciousness to giant robots to fight. If they go overboard then their mind gets stuck in the robot. They can also share senses by mindmelding, which can show them each other's memories.
So it's a shittier Pacific Rim with no Kaiju?
So far, yes. And if the bad guys take a copy of a person's mind they can create evil copies of that person.
Why don't they just make copy of their own Soldier?
Probably some moral shit....the good guys have to take the high ground.
Good question. Probably because most people don't want to be cloned. And the quality needed to pilot is super rare and tied to needing the brain tested.
There's also Final Space, though that's a bit weird with it being shared with TBS.
Final Space is so utterly boring and tame, I honestly don't know why it's even on AS. They're obviously desperate for shows.
AT&T owns Otter Media(Which is where Rooster Teeth is) HBO, and Warner.
Warner controls CN and AS and they love Michael B Jordan and since Gen: Lock is already an AT&T owned product, fits the tone of Toonami, and probably cost nothing, it's easy to understand why
>RWBY supposedly got really great somewhere around S5-S6 but I was done with that show by then, even if everyone was raving about how much better it got in nearly every way.
Rwby was at it's best in vol 3. Volumes 4 and 5 were borderline unwatchable. Volume 6 was better but definitely not a full recovery.
Genndy also has a new cartoon coming out later this year. I'm surprised they aren't pairing it with the Toonami lineup. If they wanted to attract more viewers to the block with a western action series, this would have been the one to do it with.
I thought it was going into the Toonami lineup....
Regardless, if they want something western then this isn't it...I genuinely hope this show fails and sends them some kind of message.
Genndy specifically asked for it to NOT be associated with Toonami in any way. He feels Samurai Jack was held back significantly by being on Toonami
How in the actual fuck could that possibly be true?
Heyyyyy!!!! WE MADE IT BOYS!
Yea, when it was an after school 4pm block. Like I said, Toonami is ASA now with a new can of paint. It shouldn’t be airing stuff for little kids.
Toonami aired both of those and both were met with hostility because one, they were CN shows that really had no place being on AS (especially Jack which was initially a Y7 show), and secondly, it made Toonami look like a trash can for CN to place shows they didn’t give a shit about. You will notice we never got the original Teen Titans, because they were holding onto it in case Go became popular, which it did
I remember them both being met with praise....at least Jack was.
That’s a great question because Toonami burned like 6 months worth of budget to shill that shit, they gave it a premium grade timeslot, and it’s ratings were top of the line, beating Super a few times even.
I feel part of the reason Genndy has difficulties funding his projects is because he believes his shit doesn’t stink. Primal is teased to have almost zero dialog, which means it has almost no chance of success with the regular AS crowd. Even Toonami would struggle to make that successful
You are remembering wrong then, especially in regards to Thundercats. Keep in mind, Toonami got Jack years before the last season was even a concept. Attitudes did change for the better when the new season was announced
Fuck idk then, what do you think a western cartoon would have to be like to succeed on toonami? (And don't say "like anime", asking for western examples should they exist).
RWBY has a much bigger fanbase, yes. But this has the backing of a "cool", "hip" guy like Micheal B. Jordan. A big name to try and bring people and new demographics in with.
I’m honestly interested to see how this performs because it feels like they picked the absolute worst time for it. 30-40% of the audience NOPES the fuck out every week after Super ends because Dragontards refuse to watch anything else, but this seems like something that can even burn off the casual crowd. I don’t see any reason RT fans would watch a webtoon on cable, especially with all the edits it needs
I legit had to google him after seeing his name in the credits because I figured it was the old ass basketball star....he's a "literally who?" to most people who are gonna watch Toonami.
>I'm interested to see how this performs
It'll bomb and they'll blame the fans for not getting it.
The first 3 episodes of Jack were a decent example. Thick action, and a few instances to remind you that the show isn’t for kids. Adult animation in the west often struggles with that. Cartoons are inherently for kids, so they typically go full turbo edge to compensate. Jack did a good job of remembering it’s roots as a kids show, but also being made for an adult block.
Probably the most difficult thing right now for western animation of any kind is not letting retarded fans influence half the decisions, and not shoehorning in some bullshit politics
There hasn’t been a single time Toonami has mentioned that name. The casual viewer doesn’t have the slightest clue he even exists
>he's a "literally who?" to most people who are gonna watch Toonami.
I don't like the guy much as an actor, but don't be retarded. He's fairly popular and well known. Being Kilmonger in Black Panther instantly sealed that for him.
>All your posts with ...
Fuck off with that.
And I didn't know who the fuck he was in BP either, I just figured he was some random hood guy they got because there was a shortage on black actors to fill all the roles in that movie. He's nowhere near as famous to the average nerd as you're making him out to be.
user, maybe it's just that you're disconnected. Black Panther was one of the biggest 'nerd' films last year and he was the main villain. Creed, the Rocky offshoot he starred in, was popular and well received. Fantastic 4 was shit but he was in that too. And he was in Chronicle, a smaller, more cult nerd film. He's not unkown in the slightest. I don't think he's a good actor, but he's undeniably well known.
The Union sounds like Neo Zeon without a Ghiren or Char
You are greatly overestimating how much star power effects Toonami. The typical Toonami viewer doesn’t give a shit about any of these people, nor will they recognize their voice.
Shit if you want proof, just check the Toonami thread when it was airing. The first VA name dropped was Monica Rial of all people, who is a literally who celebrity wise. But not to Toonami viewers who watch dubbed anime all the time
Hasn't it been getting the second or third best viewership numbers after super and black retard since getting the death slot?
RWBY's episode length is too short and inconsistent to fit on television. It's basically impossible to air.
I love how from the first episode I have no idea what the conflict in the show is even about and what 'the Union' is fighting for, and apparently that doesn't change at all. My god it's amazing DeMarco thought this trash was acceptable, it makes RWBY look like Shakespeare.
I don't think anyone would know who Monica is if she didn't try to ruin Vic's career.
I don't know which is funnier, Monica's non-existent fame or the fact that she's about to lower job. People tend to like Bulma's VA morebecause her voice sounded better, but is hampered by Funimation's shit direction
Shit I meant Bulma's old VA
Monica has a very distinctive and overused voice. She is one of those ones you can always pick out right away. Even before the Vic shit, people always recognized her as Stocking
She'll always be Hyatt to me.
it was way better than ruby, and nemesis was a great design
This. If this was a live action show where we actually were seeing these people, that might have some impact. But just the voice is not enough for the typical casual to pick up on. And a good portion of the casuals that do pick up on it will say to themselves “was that...?” and not figure it out immediately. You aren’t going to have droves of people tuning in for the GoT girl if they don’t even realize she is on one of the shows
I actually didn't know she was Nyamo from Azumanga Daioh, though. I felt like an idiot when somebody pointed that out.
She actually has a fairly decent range and can do a decent adult voice, they just shove her into every squeaky little girl role so that’s the one everyone is used to hearing
I enjoyed the twist involving Chase and the villain.
Though I managed to figure out some of it beforehand I'm pretty most people will be caught off guard by that.
I was surprised that people didn't understand the ending when you know who died and what he meant.
skip the '' the only me i know'' episode. its a sjw cringefest. other than that, its an adequate show.
No it’s literally just the Mecha shit from ID0 slapped onto an extremely generic war story that essentially gundam lite with a barebones Zeon that late basically just space nazis and a voice cast that rooster teeth can barely afford
It feels kinda nice to stop watching Toonami after Hunter x Hunter ended since JoJo and Attack on Titan turned to shit.
Incredible. Every word you just said was wrong.
>JoJo turned to shit
>JoJo
>shit
My assumptions about the plot or the fact that this trashfire of a show is "Forced diversity because"?
Mostly the plot stuff. [1] and [2] are wrong (so far) and we still don't know enough about [3] to be sure.
I don't get the "Forced diversity because" tho. It's literally WW3, seems pretty logical to me that their will be characters from all over the world, on both sides. It's really not "the evil cis vs the nice poc", at least so far ; we really need to know more about the Union asap.
btw the "white guy in red suit" is asian. Purple girl will probably tick you off tho, and she's by far the most hamfisted "Forced diversity" thing in that show but it's really the only one.
It's faux mecha anime by people who are only vaguely familiar with the workings of mecha anime.
