My main criticism of seasons 2 / 3 (season 2 basically) is that Catra really didn't advance in any meaningful way. You could make the argument that she slid further into the same mistake, but she's turned into a pure foil at this point, that just exists to be evil. Her evil is understandable, but the crying little girl is basically completely gone at this point. She's just a hateful bitch that wants to blame the world for her own existence. It reminds me of Demona from Gargoyles, in that she can't accept that she's responsible for most of her own misery at this point.

I imagine if they did, it would be way, way later on. Considering how much the creator hates white straight men (that aren't dead), I imagine either it won't be allowed, he'll already be dead, or he'll be reduced to a jibbering comic relief character in some way.

That’s the exact point: she did advance in a meaningful way, just not a positive one. Her initial character set up led for her to become one hell of a villain, and I honestly find that more rewarding than yet another magically redeemed antagonist for the sake of “depth”. As if you can’t achieve character complexity via any villainous characterization whatsoever
