Monsters want to get rid of the royal family and/or destroy magic for reasons the princess will slowly understand.
So it's pretty much how the princess grows as a person on Earth (later on her kingdom), allowing her to understand others and the web of lies within her family history.
And also, pretty much every character is a psycho and the ones who aren't have a dark past to compensate... but it's fun to watch.

First 2 seasons are good. The 3rd has problems and takes the story in a completely different direction, but it can still be enjoyable depending on how you look at it. 4th starts out ok, but after Coronation it just starts to fall apart concluding in the biggest clusterfuck of an ending I've ever seen. If you watch it I'd say Coronation is ultimate drop off point. Then just imagine what happened and trust me what every you come up with will be much better than the actual ending.

I'd say the ultimate drop-off point is the 3rd season finale, where if you don't know any better you can imagine Star is still queen and or Eclipsa or Globgor is evil and so expect a better hypothetical final season than what was ultimately delivered
