Alex Hirsch's success

>Gets to go to the most famous animation school in America.
>Starts working before he can even graduate.
>Get's his own show at 25.
>It becomes a beloved classic.

How did he do it bros?

Fixed.

>His sister worked a part time job to fund his schooling.
She must've had a lot of faith in him.

He was just graduating during the time Adventure Time was at its peak popularity and showrunner-driven shows were in hot demand and DisneyXD needed their own hit, becuase what the hell did they have at the time? Marvel shit? Randy Cunningham? The 7 D??

I'd just like to know how the hell he got in to a school with a 20% acceptance rate (7% for character animation) when his artwork is so mediocre.

>het cis wasp
>show is about other het cis wasps and their token Mexican wage slave friend
Yikes

Is the dream of amateur animators becoming show runners dead? It seems like going to CalArts always puts you at a massive advantage by establishing connections. But could a show, in theory, be picked up on its own merits?

Olan Rogers got a show despite the fact that he's never worked in the industry.

he's jewish

Same deal with Pen Ward. His art is downright terrible.

Attached: WTF.jpg (4484x1167, 1.54M)

Didn't he fuck his sister a lot?

he's jewish, actually

And then he tossed all of it out the window because working was too hard and he wanted to virtue signal on twitter.

Soos is based off of a real person and friend of Alex. Your bait needs to have some connection to reality to be good.

The Virgin Manlet
>ashamed of being white and male
>created a quirky and dumb female but then ruined her
>created a blonde girl villain whose motivation was the tired old "I'm a rich Trixie Tang type so everyone has to obey me" cliche
>then couldn't decide whether or not to redeem her
>show was originally supposed to be three seasons + movie
>cut it down to 2 seasons, the movie split into 3 parts and crammed in, all of it rushed
>no future, his netflix shit is vaporware just like fox

The Chad Braly
>not at all ashamed of his hapa Thai heritage and incorporates it into his cartoon in a non-obnoxious manner
>created a quirky and dumb yet lovable girl that got better as the season progressed
>the blonde girl antagonist is simply a manipulator, no "im a 10 year old millionare" or other unrelatable cliches
>blonde girl set on the path of redemption over a season, not some all-in-one episode that is forgotten later
>seasons are divided up into parts, like an actual story
>Hop Pop is actually likeable and not a Mr Krabs ripoff like Grunkle Stan
>bright future ahead for Matt since so far he hasn't proven to be a cancer that is hard to work with and pisses in trash barrels

BASED and FROGPILLED

jews aren't white

This is the biggest question I want answered. Along with JG Quintel. If I were to ever believe in some bullshit privilege, I would use their horrible portfolios that got them into a college with such strict submission requirements as evidence.

Attached: hqdefault.jpg (480x360, 19K)

I'm a white male and all of my dreams and ambitions have been rebuffed by the powers that be

Looking for a job on his new show, I see.

You guys have NO idea of the power of the interview.

You sit down, you talk, you tell your stories, you make them laugh, YOU MAKE THEM THINK YOU'RE GOING TO USE YOUR FUCKING DEGREE TO SUCCEED AT YOUR CAREER, you get accepted even if your portfolio is on the "meh" side.

Two guys that had hit shows got into a place with a low acceptance rate because a few minutes of talking to them was what it took to make staff go "I bet this funnyguy could actually make a show."

there's nothing more pathetic than a white m*n who can't succeed despite all the privileges given to him

Attached: i'm-a-black.jpg (886x598, 123K)

Those characters are simple. Easy to remember, easy to animate, easy for children to drawn them. That' everything you need.

>>show was originally supposed to be three seasons + movie
Didn't Hirsch said the show ended and he wasn't in the mood of over extending it?

I love him, and he's be perfect once he's redpilled

>This assumption that they must've aced the interview

*crack*
*sip*
You just need to go in there, look them in the eye, and give them a firm handshake.

Wasn’t he just a YouTuber?

>You just need to go in there, look them in the eye, and give them a firm HANDJOB.
FTFY

Yeah, it's fucking insane. Hell, he didn't even have THAT many subscribers. Well, he kinda did (1m) but that's hardly anything these days.

You think it might kinda like that college cheating scandal from a while back? Rich parents bribing their kids' way through school?

Why do ugly people feel their comments are welcome

>>Fucked tons of girls.
Go to bed Alex.

But Hirsch was raised by a single mother with financial issues. He probably was lucky. It got me thinking, what does he's dad do?

It's obviously both.

Based

>look them in the eye and give a firm handshake

Hahahaha, no.

Animation's about telling stories.

Admissions Boards will give a pass to an art style that's not particularly astounding if they get the sense that the person behind the art is a good storyteller. And if you can prove you've got a good sense of humor, and are aiming to make funny-style cartoons, all the better.

Attached: the hirsch method.jpg (500x563, 45K)

Are you joking? 1 million is still above 99% of channels.

I still very much have to question that with the excessive amount of submissions CalArts gets per year and the extremely low rate of acceptance, that Hirsh managed to beat those odds with his work. Especially if you look at some of his CalArts films like the Richard Nixon one, it's fucking raw and unfunny as shit. It's not like he came out of the gate telling Gravity Falls stories, which is still not to be accredited 100% to him.

Let me be the first to say that Alex has the most sissified non-firm handshake in human history.

It's both a lot and not. The lowest in the top 100 is like 20m.
Not to mention the possibility of dead subs considering he's been on YT for about a decade.

Attached: top100.jpg (833x249, 27K)

I will never forget his glorious meltdown

Attached: IMG_1051.png (593x3906, 1.7M)

Hell, he's not even in the top 500.

Attached: top500.jpg (825x233, 26K)

Probably by submitting good life drawings and studies, both of which are really important to Calarts when reviewing character animation applicants

A good chunk of it is accredited to him, and some of the stories we know are 100% written by him (like the comic) are pretty solid stuff.

Someone at CalArts looked at his stuff, read what he wrote, listened to what he said, and came to the conclusion that he had what it took to succeed in the industry. And that person was right.

>FUCK OFF TWITTER!
>continues actively using Twitter

And to add on once more, he's not even in the top 5 THOUSAND.

Attached: top5000.jpg (795x225, 25K)

Calarts looks for some kind of identity in your work.

If you compare accepted/rejected sketchbooks you’ll get a feel for someones personality more in the accepted ones, I find.

That’s probably why he, and Penn got in despite their skills seeming lackluster.

>He tossed it all out the window

Yeah, I look at Alex Hirsch and think "there's a guy that tossed it all out the window by saying that twitter is a shitty shitty platform and Donald Trump's a shitty shitty person."

Reading through that... the funny thing is, no fringe sjw groups (lgbtbbq, women, etc) ended up getting oppressed and for the most part Blumpf really did go "reasonable with power" since he barely did anything he promised certainly none of the harsher shit.

it's so sad he can't even remember being on Malcolm in the Middle now

poor dumb bastard

He was still high enough to get noticed

I don't know you.
I've never met you.
I know nothing about you... accept the fact that you've bitched about things while continuing to use them yourself because it's just convenient to do so.

yes we are.

Guess which race belongs to

Are you mentally/physically disabled, or just a loser?

>And that person was right.
You realize that a very, very, very low percentage of graduates gets TV shows, right?

Convenient sure, but if you want to take the moral high ground don’t keep using the platform you’re complaining about. If he was an unknown in the industry I’d give him a pass as Twitter is great for networking but he’s established enough to maintain an audience on whatever social media he uses. Quitting twitter wouldn’t hurt him or jeopardize his career.
I don’t even disagree with him about twitter but this is empty virtue signaling for attention and clout

Well, Alex is just sort of floating in the Netflix void now. He got a pretty lucrative deal, but considering Netflix's recent financial troubles, and the fact that nothing about that Inside Job cartoon he's been working on has materialized after months of being in development, I'm starting to wonder if his days might be numbered there as well.

Also, for some reason, Hirsch was recently chimping out and taking shots at Scientology for some reason. I mean that went out of fashion after South Park did it over a decade ago... and he's bound to piss off the wrong people in the industry doing that. Guy really needs to learn to get the fuck off twitter.

jews aren't white

we don't have any privilege
we're just inherently better
there's a reason why we're the only race that was able to conquer almost all of the world

Yeah?

I'm specifically saying "how the fuck did he get in, his art is terrible" isn't a sensible thing to say when pointing at two of the most successful graduates - ones that made stuff even a good chunk of Yea Forums thinks is pretty good. They clearly had other qualities that were probably picked up on. It might have been "luck" but it doesn't seem unreasonable to assume that they picked up on Alex and JQ being decently funny guys with some skill in storytelling.

I'm more surprised when unfunny fucks manage to get ANYTHING than I am when a pretty funny dude manages to get accepted to a school specializing in funny cartoons.

I guess that makes sense

And light skin Brazilians/Argentunians aren't white either
Sure
Sure

No way, bitch. When I was 16 I heard a Pearl Jam song and the lyric was “if you hate something don’t you do it too”, and it made me think of my parents and how they were hypocrites. Since then I made a huge effort to not be like that ESPECIALLY when it’s convenient. Don’t assume shit about me. Just because you’re weak and have no integrity doesn’t mean everyone is. Fuckin’ queen bitch.

Keep forcing it, Luke

>gets his own show with a high amount of creative freedom
>show has a massive fan-base
>show somehow has genuine support from the network behind it
>rushes the ending ruining the build up of two and a half seasons and quits the show to work on what will probably be an edgy Adult Swim tier Rick and Morty rip-off
>it's not even out yet
Very cool Alex

kek

What a faggot

>Fucked tons of girls
didn't happen

Trans people were banned from military service, there was that muslim travel ban, the mexican concentration camps weren't his thing, but ICE has been doing a lot more work lately, not to mention that we've had a looot of mass shootings over the past two years- not that this specifically is Trump's fault, it's more or less the rise of white nationalism that he indirectly enables. Trump's been a pretty shit president mate, not only for civil rights but he hasn't done any of the shit he promised his base. The one good thing you can say about him is that he's being diplomatic with North Korea.

>there's a reason why we're the only race that was able to conquer almost all of the world
>we
I love how everyone with a skin tone lighter than "tan" automatically gets a pass for genetic superiority thanks to the political success of two maybe three Western European nations.

'Diplomatic' meaning KJU tulls Pres Dickbutt says alot, does absolutely nothing, activates back channels to smuggle stuff and then sends his diplo staff to the firing squad. And ol' Dickbutt loves it.

He's virtuous though. Who are you to tell him not to signal it?

yeah it's not going good, at all. But I'll say that I appreciate the attempt, talking out problems is the way to go. Trump himself is too retarded to actually do this with Kimmy, but if I can say at least one good thing about his presidency it's that an "attempt was made" regarding NK ... if you ignore that fire and fury thing.

Ok, Luke

anonymous.

His sub count helped but it was that specific Final Space video that got people's attention. It isn't like it usually is where networks wanna make a show based around his whole channel like Fred or Annoying Orange. Olan has flat out stated that the people who he was pitching to had no idea who he was.

he went there at the same time (but different graduating class) as Pendleton Ward, JG Quintel, and various other lesser famous animators/storyboard artists, he spent the majority of his time at Calarts doing what you're supposed to do if you want to make it in the industry: networking and making impressive final thesis animation pitches.

He did all the right things and people remembered him for it, much like a fraternity or a sorority, these ivy league art schools help you meet likeminded people who help grow the incestuous network that floods the industry.

It's kind of disgusting if it weren't impressive.

Looking at Alex's old work doesn't demonstrate amazing storytelling potential, especially his CalArts films. The same with JG Quintel. They just happened to get successful, but to suggest they were some hyper talented comedy cartoonists and that's why they were accepted and went on to have great careers is a farce. They're one of the fews who got lucky, but none of that came to shine until they finally got shows. Unless you think Alex Hirsch's "Lady Troubles" film is fucking hysterical or something.

Ironic that you say not to assume things about others, and then, in the same breath, assume the person you are responding to is weak.

You're a hypocrite.

Fuck off tumblr cunt

>your bait needs to be bounded in reality
Not if I repost it on Twitter with a gay furry avatar

>Blames Twitter for his addiction

That's a quadruple yikes. That's Mark Fuhrman levels of, "Working for the police made me racist". There's fucking browser extensions that can block the site for you.

Makes you wonder why woke mobs treat them all the same regardless then, dunnit?

Remember that time when Alex and Dana donated to Planned Parenthood everytime someone said they were against abortion on their Twitter and then screencapped all the donation receipts they had?

At the very fucking least he gave money to charity, but I can't believe there are people who see someone boasting about it as a way to "get back at someone on social media" as being anything other than cringe.

Holy shit what a whiny bitch.

Attached: 1537777007176.png (472x341, 149K)

I'll take "He's a Jew" four a thousand OP.....

It's entirely possible the folks at Disney liked his pitch enough to give him a show, and it's entirely possible he happened to do this bitch before the age of 25. Which would be more likely if he just so happened to develop his talents at a particularly renowned university.

It's almost like outside observers notice discrepancies in positions of power based on race and gender.

>white people will be hated if they are successful
>white people will be hated if they are not successful
>regardless, it is never, ever ok to empathize with a white person, or anyone who associates with them
>the woke future will only privilege me
this is why trump won. seriously, it's beyond satire at this point. we're all fucked.

He comes across as someone who took his success for granted. He wanted to get the fuck out of Disney as fast as possible despite having a hit show with quite a bit of creative control, give the shit he was allowed to do, then years later kept milking Gravity Falls even though he wanted to be done with it and despite it being three years since the finale, he's still kind of riding its coattails like it's brand new. He said he wanted to do something on FOX, and that turned out to be a bust.

If it wasn't for him being in the right place, right time with Netflix sweeping up any notable cartoonist and animator in one giant deal, I feel like he would've continued to ride Gravity Falls' dead horse well into 2025.

He wanted to end the show, so let it end, Alex. Quit bringing it back up because, "Wait, I have another story!". Channel all that shit into something new.

It's almost like politically motivated bigots with delusions of racial superiority will scapegoat convenient ethnicities for why their lives are terrible.

Get fucked, separatist.

I have no idea what point you're trying to make, and I would really prefer it if you go back to your containment board.

You first, man. You're the one who brought this shit up. But yeah, pretend you don't know what you're talking about you fucking moron.

Back to tumblr, bitch

I haven't had a Tumblr account since 2014, but thank you for personally attacking me instead of bothering to explain the poorly-expressed points you clearly have a lot of emotional investment in arguing with strangers on the Internet about.

Guys, stop fighting! You're making Mabel cry!

Attached: NOOOOO.jpg (1280x720, 99K)

Wankrag, like you could even hold a halfway coherent conversation about the points you yourself brought up. You're a scapegoating bigot and proud of it. Fuck off.

Can you please learn how to communicate in a more intelligible way? This is really boring baseline trolling.

I apologise Mabel, I will disengage.

And yet you keep replying, gaslighting faggot. Did your galaxy brain get lost on your way to somewhere more intelligent or are you, like everyone else here, wasting your pathetic life on a comics and cartoon board?

You're a scapegoating bigot that blames whites and Jews for your problems. You belong on /pol/, not anyone else. Fuck off.

Two faggots saying absolutely nothing at each other.

FUCK MABEL

Third faggot talking to absolutely no one.

>but ICE has been doing a lot more work lately

Lmao 35 arrests in a "grand sweep" after illegal immigration increased to over a million a year. And still fewer deportations than under Obama.

There is zero evidence to support this claim about his sister. It’s based on nothing whatsoever

>is currently being paid 10 million a year to develop new shows for Netflix
>”tossed it out the window”

Not sure you understand what success is, m8

Calarts student here. CalArts doesn’t have an interview portion of the acceptance process. It’s solely based on portfolio (which is 80% figure drawing)

Wait, I thought he was more into Ariel...

Do you think Alex/pen 's art is Calarts worthy?

Compare Hirsch and Quintels films to the films from other graduates those years and you’ll have your answer. It’s about about making the greatest film of all time. It’s just about making the most funny film of your CLASS that year. And Hirsch and Quintel absolutely did that multiple years.

I’d have to look at their figure drawings. Do you have a copy of their figure drawings? If not, you wouldn’t know. Artists draw very different for a life study VS using quick shorthand for a story sketch

>And Hirsch and Quintel absolutely did that multiple years.
Then they succeeded on a grading curve rather than individual talent, because their CalArts films are boring as fuck.

It’s *not about making the best film of all time, correction,

That is correct. And if you were a student those years, and made films funnier and more memorable than Hirsch and Quintel, you would have received the same job offers. It’s really that simple

The problem here is that most of Yea Forums are either autistic or so antisocial that they genuinely can’t fathom the idea that charisma, sense of humor, communication skills and storytelling ability factor into a creators success. We can only understand >muh draftsmanship as a metric for talent skill or worthiness because it’s like math, something you can just rate with a number. That’s why charismatic storytellers who can’t draw like DaVinci will always baffle and infuriate Yea Forums. (And before you say “HIRSCH ISNT CHARISMATIC CUZ TWITTER” watch him in an actual panel or interview, he’s bright quick funny and a very good communicator. (Not surprising since he is the voice of Stan and Zeus and Bill)

This is true about Hirsch and Quintel, but what about Pen? In interviews he seems full autismo

But Hirsch and Quintel were not only competing with their classes by the time they graduated. There are hundreds to thousands of people submitting their resumes every single day at studios and networks hoping to land a job or get their pitch picked up. They just happened to make the one right guy laugh and that one guy helped them coast through their careers. If it was not for that one person, whoever it was, I don't think they would've made it. The same way Justin Roiland only has the most successful Adult Swim show they've ever had because Dan Harmon thought he was so funny and worked with him to get R&M off the ground.

Prior to that, Roiland had made crappy little web toons for about a decade with some voice acting gigs and no real goal in mind. Now they're all just sort of coasting on their, "From the creator of" reputation. This is in contrast to people like Genndy Tartakovsky who is consistently good no matter what studio he works in or what job he's on and does not need to ride the coattails of, "From the creator of Dexter's Lab" over and over again.

Not exactly figure drawings but here's a piece of art that isn't in AT style.

Attached: penwarts.gif (1631x550, 357K)

what in fresh hell is this from? Who is this non-breeding stock goblin?

I didn't think it was when user said it, because I've seen people online who live in far away states or even overseas saying they got accepted into CalArts. But I couldn't verify whether they did a Skype interview or what.

I do know that you have to physically mail your sketchbooks to CalArts and they will end up keeping them unless you request it back. I've had a couple of friends lose their sketchbooks to the CalArts submission process and were too depressed to request them back after hearing they were rejected.

This guy, the way he looks and sound are reddit incarnate... Yet I still loved Gravity Falls. One of those cases in which it's best to separate art from the artist.

Attached: 1564579246820.png (316x256, 33K)

Wreck it Ralph 2

Again this is /cos/ autism. If you think “making people laugh” is a minor thing for someone looking to produce television comedy, and think it would be fairer if those jobs were given to people better at rendering knuckles, then you don’t know shit about the entertainment industry

And you're an idiot if you think just because someone else coasted along on another person's connections, that must mean they're super talented and deserve the opportunities.

Saying that Alex Hirsch, who wrote, created, and starred in Gravity Falls, a show beloved by millions all over the world isn’t talented, is just stupid. You don’t have to love him but he’s obviously a talented writer producer and voice actor. Pretending that he’s not out of jealousy is a weird thing to do

The guy who made "Almost Naked Animals" got two more shows after this and is on his way to getting a fourth one. You want to tell me he's a comedic genius because he has so many shows, that he must be? You want to convince me that, "It's popular, therefore it's GOOD!"?

Alex Hirsch hasn't done shit except make Gravity Falls, and he dropped the ball with that and wanted to quit after one season. His own incompetence caused the remainder of the series to gradually drop in quality. Pen Ward basically handed his show over to someone else after a second season and Bravest Warriors is just a clone of the same show with a different cast. JG Quintel's "Close Enough" looks like Regular Show but with humans instead of animals. Every single one of Justin Roiland's projects looks like a spin-off of Rick and Morty.

Riding the coattails of your previous success, wanting to give up, or repeating yourself several times is not the sign of a "truly talented person". It's people who got lucky, plain and simple. There is a gigantic gap between someone like Craig McCracken who can move forward, make something new, and continue to succeed no matter what the project and someone like Alex Hirsch who keeps reminding people, "Hey guys! Remember Gravity Falls? Do you want more Gravity Falls?".

Attached: download.jpg (188x268, 16K)

>Hirsch

jew. thats how he did it.

>If you criticize anyone, you must be jealous
God, imagine being that much of an unapologetic fanboy.

It's pretty fucking petty to use a goodwill action as a shield from criticism. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole RAICES charity stream was more about sticking it to the man rather than helping the cause.
