It's been a good while since i've seen the episode, more so the entire show, why is this specific one hated by the entire fandom so much?

It was about Dipper flirting with girls and getting their phone numbers to build up his confidence. The lesson at the end was that flirting is chauvinistic.

Besides the fact that it dredged back up his crush on Wendy, it was hypocritical. Dipper was lambasted for doing what Mabel has been doing since the very first episode.

She originally seemed to be the shy dorky one of the girls, but I guess Mabel's influence got to her and she became what she was in that ep.

Maybe, if Dipper regular hung out with her, Mabel, and Grenda as a group on a regular basis. Perhaps becoming "another one of the girls".

Anything can work out, if given into the hands of a competent writer, which Hirsch wasn't.

For some reason, during season 2, Candy became less of an independent character who did odd shit like attach forks to her hands, and more like Mabel, focused on chasing around boys and backstabbing her friends to get ahead. It was really jarring. On a self-accountable show, one could chalk it up to Mabel's bad influences, but that would first have Hirsch admit that Mabel was bad. Wasn't happening. Candy also had an interest in the Monstermon thing like Dipper, but this was a small and never explored part of the show. It could have been developed, but the show decided to focus on the fat hambeast girl instead to win tumblr brownie points for having the most likely and body-negative candidate win the hottest guy. Candy was left in the dust.

Then Roadside Attraction came, and Candy really just started liking Dipper out of nowhere, mainly because he displayed confidence. Setting aside that he's already done this in front of her many other times before, the ship just goes nowhere because Dipper doesn't seem to want to return the feelings, we are never really given a reason why so it just looks like he is rejecting her because either she's not as attractive or she's Mabel's friend, relatively shallow reasons. In the end, Candy is the one made to break up with Dipper for an absurd reason and Dipper apologizes to her for being dickish, it was like a poor attempt at aping a Timmy/Tootie episode from FOP, which for its credit at least did the rejected nerd girl plot right most of the time. In fact, the episode just feels really out of place and I've see nit theorized here before that Dana or Emmy forced him to do it because if it's anything white feminists hate, its WMAF.

Oh and I forgot to mention that its positioning between some of the most lore-heavy and important episodes of the series didn't help either. The fact that Stanford wasn't featured in it at all really makes me think it was a leftover plot from Season 1 or something, it was so jarring to see after episodes like Not What He Seems and the Ford & Dipper plot in the unicorn episode.

Prime GILF material was wasted on this episode. Unforgivable.

The Dipper/Candy stuff was the only good part aside from the random hijinks involving the different attractions on the road trip. The reason why the episode was shit was equating being confident and slightly flirtatious around women with being committed to them, and who gets to moralize to Dipper about it but none other than Mabel, who came up with the idea for Dipper to play the field to get over Wendy to begin with.

The first mistake was taking romance advice from Mabel, whose view is to keep firing until you hit something. Dipper is the type to invest himself.

Roadside Attraction was just one episode in the entire series, user. The Hacklet had two whole seasons to do something with Candy's character but instead got lazy and just made her into Mabel 2.0 or a female version of Toshi from American Dad. Grenda ended up having more focus than she did.

The bigger question mark is why Alexander the Manlet wasted an entire anticlimatic episode on building up and tearing down that ship when it was third or even fourth rate in terms of popularity, essentially a crack ship springing from one moment where Candy and Dipper cowered together in fear. WMAF must've triggered him or someone in his ear/hand in his pants enough to do so.
